The Kobe Muslim Mosque was built in 1935 as the first mosque in Japan. Its construction was supported by donations by the Islamic Committee of Kobe. The mosque was designed by Jan Josef Svagr (1885-1969) based on the traditional Turkish style. The mosque withstood the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995.
