Questa torre è stata eretta nei primi anni del 1300 come simbolo di potere della città. È alta 88 metri ed è possibile raggiungere la sua sommità salendo gli oltre quattrocento scalini, ma il panorama merita lo sforzo. This tower was erected in the early 1300s as a symbol of the city's power. It is 88 meters high and it is possible to reach its summit by climbing the more than four hundred steps, but the view is worth the effort.

La Torre del Mangia si trova in piazza del Campo a Siena; è la torre civica del palazzo Comunale. È tra le torri antiche italiane più alte, arrivando a 88 metri all'altezza degli ultimi merli.

Se soffrite di vertigini, forse non è il caso di avventurarsi fino agli 88 metri della Torre del Mangia, ma vi avvertiamo che vi perderete una vista eccezionale. Da lassù, infatti, lo spettacolo è davvero mozzafiato. Si vede tutta Siena: da Piazza del Campo, al Duomo un po’ più distante, alle colline lontane. Lo spettacolo, ovviamente, vi costa la fatica di salire ben 400 scalini! La torre prende il nome da Giovanni di Duccio, primo custode che si godeva la vita spendendo tutti i suoi guadagni mangiando nelle osterie di Siena. I senesi lo avevano ribatezzato Mangiaguadagni, da cui Torre del Mangia. La leggenda racconta che durante la costruzione ai piedi della torre siano state seppellite monete portafortuna e che ad ogni angolo della torre ci siano pietre con scritte latine ed ebraiche, con il compito di tenere lontani dalla Torre tuoni e tempeste.

Dominating Piazza del Campo, the Mangia Tower stands tall, one of the most famous in Tuscany and, with its 87 metres in height (102 if you include the lightening rod), the third tallest historic tower in Italy. It’s the civic tower for the Palazzo Pubblico, the city’s town hall, and its height was meant to symbolize the free communes and the liberation from feudal power. Situated in Piazza del Campo, also known as the symbol of Siena, the tower was built between 1338 and 1348, constructed in brick with a stone cornice and belfry, boasting a light and elegant structure that takes its name from its first bell ringer. Giovanni di Balduccio was famous because he wasted his money, especially on good food, and was nicknamed Mangiaguadagni, literally Earnings Eater, abbreviated to ‘Mangia’: his role didn’t last long because in 1360, the first mechanic clock was installed, but the nickname was forever associated with the tower. The top part of the tower, built in travertine, is the work of the Sienese sculptor Agostino di Giovanni, on the design by Lippo Memmi. In 1666, after various fusion attempts, a large bell was installed, which the Sienesi called Campanone, also known as Sunto because it was dedicated to the Mary Assunta. When built it was one of the tallest secular towers in medieval Italy. At 88 metres, it is third tallest after Cremona's Torrazzo (112 m) and the Asinelli tower in Bologna (97 m).
