La Gola di Avakas, un capolavoro della natura, si trova nell’incontaminata Penisola di Akamas, a nordovest di Pafos. Paradiso degli amanti del trekking, essa offre vedute spettacolari e la possibilità di conoscere la flora e la fauna locali, inclusa la “centauria akamantis”, una pianta endemica in via d’estinzione, che si trova soltanto qui. Scavata nella roccia calcarea, la gola, che arriva a toccare i 30 metri di profondità e che ad un certo punto si restringe in maniera impressionante, rappresenta un percorso piuttosto difficile, in quanto il sentiero, irregolare, si snoda serpeggiando lungo ed oltre il corso d’acqua che ha formato questa meraviglia della natura migliaia di anni fa. Alcuni tratti sono scivolosi e prevedono faticose arrampicate su rocce e pietre. Si consiglia, pertanto, l’uso di scarponi da trekking e di indumenti pratici. Si raccomanda, inoltre, di fare preventivamente ampie scorte d’acqua potabile e di non addentrarsi nella gola da soli, senza aver prima avvisato qualcuno dei propri spostamenti. La ricca flora della gola comprende, tra gli altri, pini, cipressi, ginepri, fichi selvatici, felci e querce ed una profusione di fiori selvatici. Un esemplare pregiato è rappresentato dalla “centauria akamantis”, una specie endemica rarissima, con fiori di colore violaceo che sbocciano in primavera. La fauna include volpi, lepri, falchi, corvi, gufi, farfalle ed un gran numero di rettili. La gola è lunga 3 chilometri. Diverse agenzie di viaggi propongono visite organizzate alla gola.

The Avakas Gorge Trail is located in the homonymous gorge, within Pegeia state forest with the end of the trail located inside the gorge. It follows the course of the Avgas River, from where the gorge gets its name and resulted from constant erosive activity on the erodible, sloping limestone rocks composed of loams, chalks, reef and grain limestone and bentonitic clays. The gorge is also a Natura 2000 area. The trail firstly follows a dirt road (closed to private vehicles) through an open valley, then takes you into the gorge. In its last section, the trail is in the stream, in which water usually flows throughout the year. The route through the gorge is characterized by thick vegetation and a particularly attractive, shady and moist environment.

Carved out of limestone rocks, rising up as high as 30 metres and narrowing dramatically at one point, the gorge is a fairly difficult hike, but with spectacular views.
