De Wallen is the medieval city center that is crossed by canals and narrow alleys full of traditional bars. The Oude Kerk, surrounded by the neon-lit red-light district, is an age-old former church in which cultural events are organized. Exhibitions and concerts are now held in the old Beurs van Berlage of red brick. The Ons' Lieve Heer Op Solder museum hides a graceful Catholic church in the 17th-century attic.
