Arlo’s is known for its atmosphere and inclusive pricing; it’s a huge hit with Balham locals and has absolutely nailed the concept of a family restaurant. On a big night, the place is buzzing, bavette steaks flying out of the kitchen. Order one to share (starting at £29 for two — a generous 500g — and running up to £110 for 2kg, which feeds a big family), and slap on a sauce for a quid. Choose from chimichurri, bearnaise, or peppercorn. And by no means miss the “trenchers” — seasoned sourdough chunks served under the steak and deployed as soft little bread vehicles with which to mop up juices.

Arlo’s is a neighbourhood restaurant that’s simple in its approach but serious about its steak. The focus is on less celebrated cuts like bavette, hanger and deckle and they only use high-welfare British beef, so the meat is top quality. It’s all paired with simple sides like hand-cut chips, mac & cheese, zingy salads and a short but decent wine and cocktail list. Arlo’s whip up thick milkshakes that you can booze up, should you fancy it with a kick.

The team behind newcomer Arlo’s is serious about steak, and what better way to spend a date night – or indeed a mate date – than with a prime piece of tender British bavette? It’s situated next to Balham Bowls Club – the perfect spot for a pre-drink under the fairy light-strewn ceiling.
