ne of Ireland’s first unfortified houses, passed down 11 generations from its 17th-century builder, Beaulieu House boasts a fine collection of family portraits, all with stories to tell. That of the “Rebel General”, hanging in the Dining Room, stirs curiosity in particular. Having served in the British Army, Richard Montgomery (1736–1775) later emigrated to America and, sympathising with the Colonialists, fought for their cause in the American Revolutionary War. A celebrated hero, he campaigned in Canada but was killed during an attack on Quebec.
