Walks

Perfect little dog walking spot. Walk towards the Market Place, and from here cross the road and go behind the church in front of you. There’s a pedestrian crossing over the main road, then head right and follow the canal. From here, you’ll get to the swimming pool and there are options for walks. Turn left before reaching the pool to walk across the fields, over a little bridge for a dip in the stream, then follow the paths through the woodland. Alternatively, walk past the swimming pool and go over the bridge over the river. Turn left and join the path which forms the Spa Trail, a walk from Horncastle to Woodhall Spa of about 6.5 miles.

A great woodland nature reserve only a 10 minute drive from Horncastle on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. The Country Park side of the nature reserve is dog friendly and takes you through mixed woodlands fretted by streams. Follow the green tree markers for a nice 1 1/4 mile walk. Take £1 with you for parking.

Just north of Skegness, Anderby Creek offers a quieter retreat, with big skies and open sandy beaches. It’s an ideal, dog friendly walking spot to get some fresh sea air any time of year. It’s also home to the Cloud Bar - the worlds only official cloud spotting area as designated by the Cloud Appreciation Society! The North Sea Observatory is also nearby and worth popping in to warm up with a cuppa overlooking views of the sea (it’s also dog friendly!).

Dog Friendly Pubs

Our local and first choice for a nice drink. The bull offers a good range of beers and spirits and they’ve recently re-decorated so it’s nice and fresh inside with plenty of covered outdoor seating too. They also offer a nice range of tapas to go alongside your drinks. Their resident dog Baxter might be there to greet you - though he can be a bit grumpy!

Over the road from The Bull is the Kings Head, known by the locals as ‘The Thatch’. It’s a small, ‘proper pub’ with a great, cosy atmosphere. Good selection of beers and a dedicated gin menu.

Neighbourhoods

Honeypot Cottage is right in the heart of Horncastle. This popular market town is worth a walk round to view the historical buildings, with plenty of stopping places along the way! Look out for the blue plaques, and take a walk to view the historical castle walls. Pick up a trail guide from the Sir Joseph Banks Society Museum (look for the Information sign on Bridge street).

A quaint little town, full of military history. Worth a walk around in the day time for independent shops, the best ice cream shop and a nice walk through the woods. There’s also an outdoor swimming pool. In the evening, enjoy a delicious curry or sit outside and enjoy cocktails along the highstreet. The cinema is a must, for vintage vibes at half the price of a chain cinema! The organist plays with the last film in Screen 1 every Saturday night. If you’re visiting in July, check the dates of the 1940s weekend - it’s a must (fancy dress encouraged!).

The beautiful, historical city of Lincoln is approximately 40 minutes drive away. There are plenty of central car parks, or if you prefer you can catch the number 56 bus from opposite the Market Place. Buses tend to run every hour (Sundays every 2 hours). A trip to the cathedral is a must, and I’d also recommend visiting the castle. Built in 1068, walk the castle walls (make sure to get the audio guide!), explore the Victorian Prison and view the Magna Carta underground vault. Steep Hill is worth the climb, with a variety of pubs and eateries at the top.

Pronounced by some Lincolnshire folk as “low-weth”. Another popular market town, just over 20 minutes from Horncastle. Known for its weekly markets and local Lincolnshire produce; from speciality cheeses to Lincolnshire’s famous plum loaf. Nearby, Hubbards Hills is worth a visit for a walk and a paddle!

A must for winter visitors, from the end of October to the end of December, grey seals come to Donna Nook to give birth to their pups. A fenced seal viewing area is open during this time, and the seals and their fluffy white pups come right up to the fence. A true, winter wildlife experience not to be missed. Entry is free but there is a charge for parking. See the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust website for details.

Enjoy stunning views across the Lincolnshire Wolds at Red Hill nature reserve. About a 15 minute drive on the way to Louth, Red Hill is worth a stop off for fabulous views and photo-worthy wildlife (summer is the best time to see orchids and marbled white butterflies). Parts of the wildflower meadows are dog friendly, but it’s not much of a walk - more of a stop off. Don’t forget your picnic blanket!

Food scene

Super delicious, traditional restaurant with a modern twist. A charming atmosphere and friendly staff. The vegetarian options are always brilliant (not your usual stroganoff option!) and I’ve been told the braised blade of beef is the choice for meat eaters. A little more expensive but worth it. They do a discounted early bird menu between 5pm - 6:30pm, Tuesday - Friday.

If you want convenience, there is a great fish and chip shop on St Lawrence Street just round the corner (follow your nose!), but if it’s quality you’re after it’s got to be Mermaid Fisheries. Prepare to queue - especially on a Friday, but it’s worth it!
