An important town the middle ages and enjoying something of a renaissance and a centre of power and influence during the years of David Cameron, Chipping Norton is an attractive small town with beautiful surrounding countryside. Well worth a visit, not least for the outdoor swimming pool with lots of well cut grass to lay your towels on a warm summers day.

Sightseeing

Oxford is, of course, well worth a visit. Please check out my separate Oxford Guidebook for more info on the city's must see attractions. A pleasant way to access the city while avoiding the traffic and extortionate parking costs is to drive to nearby Hanborough station and catch a train right into the centre of Oxford. Journey times are approximately 10 minutes.

This odd local attraction isn't for everyone, but if you haven't seen how large reptiles behave having been transplanted from the swamps of Florida to a smallholding just outside Carterton, then this could be the place for you!

Amazingly, this collection of low-rise structures just outside the once quaint town Bicester is the UK's most visited destination by Chinese nationals. It is nearby and it's not too far, FYI.

Trendy members club, part of the Soho House Group. I haven't been here, but I have been to a few of the other Soho Houses and they've all been pretty good.

Food scene

Great little pizza place at the business centre right next to Glenfield Cottage, this place serves up some delicious pizza and is definitely worth checking out!

Quirky little microbrewery that's right on your doorstep. These guys produce some very interesting brews and are just a few hundred meters away from Glenfield Cottage

Pubs

The key thing about this pub is that it's walkable from Glenfield Cottage. Its not fancy, but its a 12 minute brisk walk across the field at the bottom of the garden and keeps good beer.

The Plough is a lovely little pub, ideally located at the end of decent walk across tracks, fields and woodland from Glenfield Cottage. A favourite Sunday lunch destination when I lived at Glenfield Cottage growing up, The Plough serves good beer, wine and food, and is just what you need after an hour long tramp over the countryside. (nb. journey times are VERY approximate)

This is a nice pub, which has displaced the iconic Trout as the best pub in Wolvercotte (largely due to the former having been amazing up to about 2005 and subsequently becoming very corporate (think slightly upscale Harvester). Also worth noting - the neighbouring village of Wytham has an even nicer pub - The White Hart Jacob's Inn has some decent food and a nice garden (particularly important these days) with a few goats and chickens, which as a father of 2 daughters under the age of 8, I can tell you is great for getting a few minutes of adult time!

This is a decent pub in a lovely little village. When I was a teenager, this pub had very irregular opening hours, but ever since David Cameron took Francois Hollande here for a cheeky pint (in front of the world's media), its always been popular.

This is a nice little pub, set in the beautiful little village of Shilton. Boasting a Range Rover affirming river ford, this picturesque village is well worth a stop, and is a nice stopgap when taking a shortcut to the Cotswold Wildlife Park nearby.

Admittedly an odd choice, the Queen's Head is my local pub (having recently moved back to Eynsham after nearly 20 years in London). I like it for a few reasons (decor not being one of them) - 1. It was the first pub I ever bought a drink in (at the ripe old age of 13), 2. It serves Punk IPA (which is one of my favourite beers and quite hard to come by outside of London), and 3. It's actually a very well managed locally owned pub which I'm happy to support.
