Food Scene

Boschendal is already one of our favorite places in the world & the Werf restaurant just makes it even better! Fine dining in an exquisite and magical setting where all the small touches make for a rustic, romantic tour of country luxury. A glorious garden sprouts delicious produce that’s being picked even as diners arrive. In the kitchen, it’s transformed into comforting, country-style food by chef Christiaan Campbell. Start with beef tartare hidden inside flutes of nasturtium leaf with baby potato chips & pickled onions. Family-style dishes for sharing include salt-baked trout; fillet with sausages, bonemarrow and béarnaise; wonderfully rich slow-cooked pork belly; and roasted leg of lamb.

Chef Ryan Smith takes snapshots of local ingredients through the lens of classic techniques. It’s far from the usual fare: glossy black balls of sago bob in miso broth with salty snoek. Slivers of warthog are layered with charred onion ash, root vegetables and onion purée; beef short rib is paired with coffee jus and parsnip crème caramel. Playful desserts might include basil-crème-filled sugar ’cannelloni’ with crisp green apple, and salted-caramel bavarois with spiced pear.

This is a bit more of a drive but it's the iconic goat cheese farm for the area. Great cheese tastings and affordable cheeses as well as plenty of fun watching the goats. They even offer goat yoga (bookings essential)! And it happens to be next door to the Spice Route which offers local craft beer, chocolate, lovely food, and a selection of other lovely little shops!

We love everything about Nobel Hill from their wines, to their fantastic Mexican restaurant (unfortunately not open at night). A lovely spot to stop for lunch and a tasting! Tokara's restaurant, cafe (just past the restaurant and wine-tasting), and wine tasting are all incredible and the location boasts some of the best views in the area. The cafe is one of our favorites spots for an afternoon drink and slice of cheesecake. If the weather is hot, the floor to ceiling glass windows let you enjoy the scenery while staying cool, and if the weather is nice the deck is sensational. The playground is perfect for kids and we also like to end our time with a walk through the olive groves. It has an incredible view that on a clear day let's you see table mountain. They also have the best 6 hr hike (must arrive before 11am and have no cloud cover on the mountain).

As you may expect, Franschhoek is not known an eating-in kind of town. On the contrary, it’s where people go to dine out. But after a weekend filled with gourmet meals and lots of walking up and down the main road, the only thing one sometimes wants to do is stay in and have your food delivered to your doorstep. You’ll therefore be glad to know that Col Cacchio is happy to do just that. And with the meager demand for takeaways, the manager herself might even drop your pizzas off at your guesthouse. The Taqueria, housed in the brewery, serves Mexican-inspired ceviche, nachos and tacos, which go down beautifully with a craft beer or two. The menu offers a variety of small plates (to be shared preferably) that include fresh and tasty tacos and nachos, as well as four desserts. It’s perfect for a spontaneous pop-in, or a light bar meal. It shares space with a state-of-the-art brewery, so the look is industrio-cool. Fine Dining at its best! Locally sourced and foraged ingredients are the focus of Chris’s flavorful, contemporary dishes. His attention to detail, and the timing of the procession of finely crafted dishes is extraordinary. The tastefully decorated interior (neutrals with pops of bright red), a fireplace for cosy winter evenings, and seating on the stoep for overflow diners creates a welcoming vibe. The open kitchen dominates the inner area, breaking down the barrier between chefs and diners. Ask to sit there, as it’s a great evening’s entertainment watching Chris marshall his team of six cheflings. Monday – Saturday, 12pm – 2.30pm; 7pm – 9pm

Quite honestly, this is not your typical touristy spot. It's a hole in the wall in an old winery in tiny Simondium but the beer is worth your while. They don't sell much else, but it just might be one of the best beers of your life.

The tasting with Kevin at Black Elephant Vintners is one of the most fun and engaging we've ever had. The location is less grand and more quirky so if you're looking for great views at an established estate this isn't for you. Pairing their delicious wines with music really adds a different angle - sounds gimmicky but it works. Kevin is really entertaining and gives a different angle in the wine industry in SA. Probably one of the most prominent features of Franschhoek is the Huguenot Monument. It’s impossible to miss, perched at the end of the Main Road. Too much wining and dining can make you feel a little sluggish, so hopping on a bike and then appreciating that next glass of vino can be rewarding and a whole heap of fun with great friends. Paradise Stables offer both wine tasting on horseback and non-wine tasting horseback rides. So if you went on a wine tasting binge the day before, this might just be what you’re looking to do. Take a scenic ride through the beautiful countryside surrounding Franschhoek. The trails last for one hour and cost R200 a person. Website: www.paradisestables.co.za Tel: 021-876-2160
