Food Scene

Tucked away on a quiet side street, this Georgian pub is set across three floors. On the ground floor, The Guildford Arms is very much a pub — real ales and classic pub food are the order of business — but ‘Upstairs’ is more of a fine dining restaurant. Pushing boundaries, Guy Awford’s menu changes regularly, built on complex but unfussy ‘modern British’ dishes. The Sunday roasts are also amongst Greenwich’s best; elegant but unpretentious.

From the team behind Poplar’s Noodle Street, Pho Street is a Vietnamese diner specialising in pho, naturally. The Pho Street Special Lobster, with flat rice noodles, is a unique and compelling standout; the rare beef Pho Bo, with rich broth brewed for eight hours, is a singularly comforting proposition. Elsewhere, pillowy bao and banh mi baguettes are also served. Food orders are taken at the counter, then brought out quickly. Lunch is recommended over dinner.

Copenhagen-born Sticks’n’Sushi is rapidly blooming into a successful chain operation, but it remains a far cry from the average high street offering. Here, find distinctly Japanese-inspired food from in spacious, quintessentially Scandinavian dining room. Sushi is clearly the prominent focus, alongside Yakitori-style skewers featuring with less conventional ingredients. The sushi is fine, although pricy as is expected in London, but “small bites” and “sticks” (duck hearts lashed with sweet, spicy Teriyaki sauce, in particular) are the most rousing menu highlights.

The name of this bistro leaves little to the imagination, and while the cosy space on the edge of Greenwich Market also serves charcuterie — which hangs from the ceiling — cheese and Champagne are the main focus. Although served in those annoying conical flutes, the Champagne is sensibly priced and available with a selection of sharing boards. Service is quick and friendly, the décor is quintessentially French and the creamy, Burgundian Brillat-Savarin is a must-try.

Just look at that bustling beer garden - an absolute picture of joy if ever we've seen one. Great pubs in Greenwich aren't hard to come by, but we've always had a soft spot for The Old Brewery in particular. It's found within a few strides of the legendary Cutty Sark and boasts an equally lovely indoor space, where a top choice of London-brewed craft beers and distilled spirits are paired with seasonal British comfort food.
