Mani is an amazing area to explore, but unfortunately I won't get into details here.
Kardamili' s beauty will win you immediately.

If you need a mostly family friendly beach with organized facilities (sunbeds, umbrellas, food & drinks) combined with great sea, and at the same time not very far from the seaside cottage, then this is probably the top pick.
Throughout this large coastline you can find some local taverns located on the beach and offering sunbeds & umbrellas. The beach is nice, however it is highly recommended to walk up to the Koroni medieval castle and enjoy the view from above.

Ok this is the highlight of Messinia.
The famous Voidokilia beach with its impressively extraordinary shape.
However, if you are wondering why most of the photos are shot from above, the reason is that, in my opinion, this beach is probably overrated.
Under circumstances it can be beautiful.
If the weather is good with no extreme wind, the sea here can be amazing and crystal clear.
However, the whole experience can also end up not so good.
- The surrounding location is like a desert and sun is really hot here. For this reason a beach umbrella -or even a tent- is highly recommended.
- Most of the times, the location here is very windy. So the umbrella should ideally be of good quality.
- Absolutely have a lot of water with you.
- Avoid staying at the beach after the sunset. There are big mosquitoes, which for some reason they are very aggressive. Not kidding.
However if you decide to visit Voidokilia (it is around 50' driving from the house):
- do read some very interesting historical as well as nature-related facts about the area. Also there is some interesting Greek mythology reference to this place.
- do visit the cave that is located above the beach at the south eastern side. The view is truly amazing from there. It is the spot from where most photos of this location are shot.
Exactly above the cave you will also see an ancient castle ruins. Not much left to see, though.
- If you are fond of birdwatching, behind the beach of Voidokilia, you will see the Gialova lagoon. Quite dried out during the last years, however very interesting and Natura protected location.
You will read really interesting information about it and about the hundreds of different bird species that visit this lagoon on their way from Africa to Northern Europe and back.

Well, the last years it has been very well known. This means that you may face overcrowding, and this might ruin the whole experience.
Prefer early mornings rather that afternoons.

Not very far from the seaside cottage, somewhere deep inside the mountain Lykodimo, which you see from the house if you look West, this natural wonder is well hidden. Well, the last years it has been very well known. This means that you may face overcrowding, and this might ruin the whole experience.
Prefer early mornings rather that afternoons.

It is a medieval castle (greek: Kastro, Kastraki), however not of any historical interest.
It is actually a theme café and bar restaurant and its structure will surely impress you.
However, after you have a look around and explore every corner of this place, just grab a seat in the terrace or one of the balconies, and just gaze across the breathtaking panoramic view of Kalamata and the whole Messinian bay.
Apart from all the above, this place offers good food and nice cocktails as well as good quality service.
