he Museum is on the site of the former RAF Hawkinge, the nearest Royal Air Force station to enemy-occupied France and only some ten minutes flying time away from the Luftwaffe fighter airfields in the Pas-de-Calais, in addition to which the airfield and surrounding district was subjected to long range cross-Channel shelling from the German shore batteries stationed along the French coast. Not for nothing was the Folkestone area known as “Hellfire Corner”. Despite the passing years today’s visitor can still savour the atmosphere of the airfield’s past with the landmarks and buildings that remain, acting as points of reference, whilst beyond can be seen the English Channel and the French coast.

Experience the adventure of a hard hat, head torch lit tour of this incredible time capsule hidden beneath The White Cliffs of Dover. Fan Bay Deep Shelter is a tunnel complex constructed in 1940/41 as accommodation for the gun battery above. Today this network of abandoned tunnels is virtually all that remains of these long forgotten defences. You too can experience the incredible adventure underground. Take a journey into the past on a guided tour of the tunnels with one of our expert volunteers, peering into the darkness and back in time into a different world, hidden within the cliffs.

On the surface Dover Castle is England’s largest castle, defending the Kent coastline from invaders since 1066. But below ground it has another hidden side. Deep inside the chalk rocks that make up the White Cliffs of Dover are three miles of underground tunnels that have played their own – more mysterious – part in defending the country. As part of my road trip through White Cliffs Country I took a look around the castle’s medieval Great Tower and Anglo-Saxon church. But it was the sign pointing to the ‘Secret Wartime Tunnels’ that caught my eye.

The Kearsney mansion was built in the 1820s by Lord John Minet Fector, a wealthy merchant and banker who loved the natural surroundings so much that he bought 90 acres of land here. Though Lord Fector never lived to see the completion of the estate, his son John continued his father’s wish and completed the building of the “abbey” by hiring the top architects of the time to finish the job.
