What to do in Mattapoisett

This small town will remind you of Old Cape Cod, before the summer traffic took over. So relax and plan your days around the weather: hit the beach for a swim at high tide, grab your kayak if it's calm, go for a bike ride, or take a hike through the woods nearby (spray for ticks first)! If it happens to rain, check out the charming Mattapoisett Town Museum, go antiquing or visit the whaling museum in New Bedford, or just grab a good book or a board game and chill out.
GETTING TO THE BEACH: The closest beach is straight down Island Street. That’s the boat launch area and a nice place to park a beach chair or to launch a kayak. The main swimming beach is back along Angelica. Walk down Beach Street, Union Avenue or Silvershell. The Crescent Beach Association puts in swim lines and a swim dock. There are no lifeguards — please swim at your own risk. Never leave children unattended at the beach, and always swim with a buddy. We also have a beach pass for the town beaches.

Check out New Bedford for many great restaurants — including The Black Whale on the harbor — amazing antique shops, and the fast ferry to Martha's Vineyard (google Seastreak for schedules). You can visit Oak Bluffs in one day and be home for dinner.

Recommended nearby restaurants

Photo of Oxford Creamery This beloved casual restaurant has been around forever. Order the fish and chips, the seafood platter, fried clams or anything fried. They also have the best ice cream around. Open Wednesdays-Sundays. Other favorites are: the cozy Tastebuds for brunch or dinner, and Turks for their immaculate fish market and very popular restaurant, both in Mattapoisett. Or check out the Brew Fish Bar & Eatery in Marion or Cast Seaside Bites (also in Marion but relatively new). For an old-school vibe, visit the Stonebridge Bar and Grill in Onset. Stonebridge overlooks the water and serves the best haddock I've ever had in my life! This is just a short list of the great local restaurants.

Where to get groceries, beer and wine

Fairhaven has several supermarkets and my favorite place for cheap beach stuff — Ocean State Job Lot. Fieldstone just over the border in Marion has some organic produce and other great stuff. For beer, wine or spirits, there are several shops on Route 6: Seahorse Wine & Spirits and Top of the Hill Liquors in Marion, plus others in Fairhaven. Don’t forget ice!
