Sightseeing
A picturesque traditional fishing village built on a steep hill. Post and shopping is delivered to the villagers by sled! Entry is via the visitor centre and there is a charge.
You can wander down the steep cobbled streets and explore the passageways and quaint shops.
If you are less mobile there is a landrover to drive visitors up and down. If you are planning to walk back you you will want to save a bit of energy!
Donkey rides are available at the visitor centre.
Watch out for special events such as the East Fudge Hunt and the September Lobster Festival.

Lundy Island is a great place to go walking, learn about local history and watch wildlife. It's particularly famed for its seal colony and puffins. You can book a day trip to Lundy from Bideford Quay. Bring your sea legs as the crossing is sometimes a little rough!

If you get the timing right there is a small chain ferry that runs between Appledore and Instow. Boat times can be found at www.appledoreinstowferry.com. It doesn't run if the weather is inclement.
If you are visiting in mid September don't miss the Appledore Book Festival which always boasts an impressive line up of both nationally famous and local authors.

The South West coast path runs all around the coast from Somerset all the way through Devon and Cornwall and back into South Devon and beyond. You can pick this up very easily in Westward Ho!. This section is pretty flat and well paved for walking or cycling.

Sandymere Beach is the closest beach to the apartment. There are several miles of beautiful golden sand. You can drive across Northam Burrows and park right behind the Pebble Ridge for very quick beach access. The pebbles are actually very large stones that were placed there to prevent coastal erosion. There is a walkway over them but take care with young children so they don't hurt themselves. At high tide the sea comes right up to the pebbles, at low tide it's quite a walk down to the sea.

This fab shop is the premier place for kitesurfing kit. It is also the location for the FREE2HIRE bodyboard scheme that operates in Westward Ho! They have 6 adult and 6 kids wooden belly boards which you can book to use.
Westward Ho! is the first village in the UK to ban the sale of polystyrene bodyboards because of their negative environmental impact. Every year thousands of polystyrene bodyboards are abandoned in the South West and they break down and do untold damage to marine environments. Definitely worth a visit!

There is also Exeter Quay which has independent shops, restaurants and cafes where you can pass an enjoyable hour or 2. You can also find river based watersports to book such as kayaking and SUP as well as Clip n Climb which is great safe indoor climbing fun for children in particular.
