Sightseeing

Our local National Trust Treasure....Buckland Abbey is a 5 minute drive from the cottage and is open to the public (please check their website for opening dates). It was the home of Sir Francis Drake and the main house is now set up for the public to view. There are quaint shops and a cafe as well as beautiful walks around the grounds and the nearby fields and river.

There are quaint shops and a cafe as well as beautiful walks around the grounds and the nearby fields and river.
Only a short drive away the city of Plymouth offers you sight of the sea, with many cafes and restaurants on the Hoe to enjoy. Next door is the historic Barbican and Mayflower Steps, with many shops and cafes and bars, as well as the Marine Aquarium. A great venue to entertain the children on a wet day!

Next door is the historic Barbican and Mayflower Steps, with many shops and cafes and bars, as well as the Marine Aquarium. A great venue to entertain the children on a wet day!

Neighbourhoods

Buckland Monachorum is a very pretty safe quiet village and is one of many hamlets in the Yelverton area. Most have a local pub and the Drake Manor is the fabulous local pub in Buckland Monachorum with Mandy and Garth there to welcome you to the village life!

Yelverton shops is situated off of a large roundabout which leads to Plymouth or Tavistock, the A386. Yelverton has a Coop supermarket, Bidders butchers for fabulous fresh meat, burgers, sausages, eggs, and a small deli selection of chutneys and jams. The local garage is also our Post Office and hardware store/newsagents. There are two cafes there...highly recommend the Game Larder, which does take outs as well as eating in. Wells Pharmacy is also on The Parade in Yelverton. There is also a hairdressers, estate agents and garage for repairs. In the Rock complex, next door, there is the Pub, hairdressers and beauty salon, foot specialist and a florist.

Drakes Trail for cycling to Tavistock or Plymouth centres from here too! A hidden gem of an area, with something for everyone.

The Leg O’Mutton is a nearby hamlet with a Boutique, hairdressers, beauty salon, March Hair and Beauty, rockin Bikes for bike hire and bikes in general....Dartmoor Bakery for freshly baked bread, cakes and take away coffees and teas and The Curry Express for fabulous Indian take aways and Jasmines for Chinese. Drakes Trail for cycling to Tavistock or Plymouth centres from here too! A hidden gem of an area, with something for everyone.

Tavistock is our local Stannary Town with many lovely shops and restaurants to visit. Favourite places to eat are The Cornish Arms in West Street, with plenty of seating outside too. Fabulous food and ambiance. Taylor’s in Market Street For fab breakfasts through to lunch and evening meals. Church Lane which is, as it’s name lends, in the lane beside the big church St Eustacious, in the Square. Italian pasta and pizza with a bar and cocktails and outside seating. The Bedford Hotel steeped in history and open to non stay over guests Dukes in The Pannier Market with plenty of outdoor seating under canopies. A light lunch or just coffee and cake for casual eating out days! Weatherspoons for eating out cheaply but in a gorgeous building, The Queens Head. TJs and LJs for good Fish and Chips! An amazing selection of independent shops for gifts, clothing and many more...
