Bring quarters for a fun time feeding the fish. The Hatchery is a state-of-the-art rearing station. Come see trout of all sizes; fish food, tours and trout fishing in beautiful Sievers Springs is all for the taking. Picnic areas and ample parking make this stop very convenient. Plus, it's right along the new Trout Run Trail. It's a great access point! Just across the street from the Hatchery you'll find Decorah's famous Eagles Nest. This nest (weighing almost a TON) has caught the attention of online users all around the globe and has been a real hit with the media. Recently featured on CNN, Fox News, CBS News, the Chicago Tribune and other sources world-wide, you can actually view a live feed into the nest, allowing online users to watch Mom, Dad and baby eaglets throughout their season in Decorah.

Visitors from around the world enjoy touring this beautiful museum, it's grounds and famous rock wall. Open weekends in May Friday - Sunday, 1-4. And Daily in June through August: Mon.-Sat 10-4 and Sundays 1-4. Also open weekends in May, September, and October. Here's a bit of history about the museum: D.B. Ellsworth, a prominent Decorah merchant, built this Italianate villa in 1867. Frank and Emma Young purchased the property in 1898. Their daughter, Grace, fell in love with the "boy next door," Adelbert Field Porter, and married him in the music parlor in June 1904. They lived out their lives in the house which now bears their name. Grace died in 1964 at the age of 84. Bert remained in the house till his death in 1968 at age 89. Bert traveled extensively throughout his life, making 7 around-the-world journeys and numerous excursions into the jungles of South America to collect specimens of exotic butterflies. Grace and her mother accompanied him on some of his trips. Bert diligently recorded his travels in journals and photographs which may be viewed at the museum. His travel gear is on display in the upper story of the house. Grace played the piano and enjoyed china - painting. Examples of her craft are on display in the dining room. The Porters were well educated and refined individuals, who enjoyed many of the finer things in life. Their friends were often invited to private concerts given by traveling musicians in the Porter's music parlor. This tradition of concerts and recitals continues today as special events. In July of 1968, Bert conveyed the house and it's contents (his worldly treasurers) to the Winneshiek County Historical Society for preservation as a public museum, after his death. Today, the museum is a private, not-for profit corporation, administered by a board of directors. Open weekends in May Friday - Sunday, 1-4. Pick up this trail one block from my home. Hop on one of Northeast Iowa’s most popular bike trails to experience incredible views, unique artwork, challenging hills, and riverside flats! There's a reason it's called the "Trout Run Trail!" The 11-mile loop crosses trout streams five times and follows the Upper Iowa River—noted for kayaking, canoeing, tubing, and trout fishing—for two miles. Of course, your family can stay on dry land and just enjoy the scenery! As you travel the Trout Run Trail, you might have to remind yourself you're right next to the city of Decorah because of the secluded route the trail takes. But the city is close at hand, and so are restaurants, hotels, gift shops, bike shops, and even several ice cream shops! One of the highlights of the Trout Run Trail is the Iowa DNR Trout Hatchery at Siewer Springs (pronounced "SEE-ver"). Kids (and adults!) will giggle as they feed the fish at the hatchery, so be sure to bring some quarters for the fish food dispensers. Siewer Springs is also a great spot for picnics, family photos, trout fishing, and bird watching. While you're on the trail near the hatchery, be sure to look up! You'll see the famous Decorah Eagle's nest. Mom, Dad, and eaglets live in this six-foot-wide nest weighing more than 750 pounds. A webcam placed inside the nest has been capturing footage of the eagles for years. Check out live footage of the "eagle cam" at http://www.raptorresource.org. Numerous Handicapped accessible fishing points are located right along the trail plus easy-to-bike-to restaurants, gift shops and hotels. Three beautiful art pieces are located along the trail among picnic shelters, benches, campgrounds and parks and even an ice cream shop! This trail has it all, come see for yourself!

Malanaphy Springs State Preserve is located on the Paleozoic Plateau landform region and contains a rugged forest, a large spring and a waterfall. Visitors can follow a trail from the parking area to a spring flowing from a cliff's opening. Visitors are also encouraged to visit the beautiful 10 foot waterfall, which is at the end of a series of cascading falls flowing over a porous lime deposit at their base and emptying into the Upper Iowa River (total height is ~ 60'). The steep slopes contain a forest with many rock outcrops throughout. The preserve houses more than 300 native vascular plants including sugar maple and basswood in the forest canopy and ironwood in the understory. Although there are dozens of springs which flow into the waters along your float from Bluffton to Decorah, Malanaphy Springs is the most well-known spring along the Upper Iowa River. Floating Directions This beautiful landmark is best viewed from the the water. When referring to the Upper Iowa River Canoe Guide, Malanaphy Springs is just short of bridge 10 on your float down from Bluffton, IA. You can rent canoes, kayaks, or tubes from Randy's Bluffton Store (see their listing under recreation). If you have your own watercraft, it's a great idea to start at Randy's, get supplies and ask for any float updates! Their friendly staff will be more than happy to help you out. Driving Directions To view the spring from above, take Pole Line Road Northwest out of Decorah off of US Hwy 52. From the intersection of IA-9 and US-52, head north on US-52. After a mile or so (give or take), you’ll turn left onto Pole Line Road. Drive on Pole Line Road for just over 2 miles to Bluffton Road. Turn right onto Bluffton Road, and drive about 0.7 miles to a parking area on your right. It’s 100′ or so off the road. (If you’ve crossed the bridge over the Upper Iowa River, you’ve gone too far.) From the parking area, take the trail to the falls. It’s not clearly marked, but there’s only one trail. You’ll be following the Upper Iowa River going upstream. Accessibility: 7/10 (easy/moderate) Length of Hike: ~2 miles roundtrip

A Luther favorite. It's no lie! Voted one of the "Top 100 Places to Eat in Iowa Before you Die" by the Des Moines Register, Mabe's Pizza is a must-stop in Decorah, we promise! Try the "Regular," it's a hometown favorite. This particular pizza was tied for first place is the "Best of the Bluffs" competition in the best pizza category. Mabe's is great for lunch or dinner. The price is right and service is top notch. A large party room in the basement (seating up to 125) can be used for birthday parties, family reunions, meetings or other events. Feel like ordering in? Mabes will deliver right to your hotel, motel or B&B in Decorah. We should tell you, they do have more than just pizza on their menu. Great pasta dishes, sandwiches, yummy appetizers and broasted chicken are also available, but good luck turning away their tempting pizza pies.

At Family Table, we’ve been serving up simply delicious comfort food for over three decades. Originally an A&W root beer stand as far back as the ‘50s, today the Family Table is a local landmark that was fully renovated in 2003. We’re a favorite here in Decorah, the kind of place you bring the family for a casual, feel-good meal. Dining with us feels like eating breakfast in grandma’s kitchen, except we serve it all day long: 6 AM to 8 PM, seven days a week! We also serve sandwiches, burgers, dinner entrees, and much more.

PIVO means beer in the Czech language and that's what you'll get with 40 taps of beer and cider in a taproom nestled between a brewery and art studio. Conveniently located just west of Hwy 52 on the north side of Calmar (9 miles south of Decorah), an amazing variety of ever changing beer styles will always be on tap, along with a few guest beers, wine, non-alcoholic drinks, and delicious food. Our taproom kitchen serves a variety of sandwiches and platters. The taproom is family friendly with a coloring corner for children, a sunny fenced in deck and a grassy beer garden where dogs are welcome. A short spur off the Prairie Farmer bike trail goes directly past our deck and bicycle parking is available. We hope you can join us for a pint or two.

These brightly colored works of art are made from old barns and other recycled material and are transformed into vases, picture frames, coat racks, tea trays and more! Each are painted, then hand-stamped on them are sweet, serious, funny or thought-provoking poems like this one, titled Laughter & Noise: "There are lives I can imagine without children but none of them have the same laughter & noise." Artist, Brian Andreas showcases this stunning artwork in galleries and studios all over the world, but Decorah is home to the studio where all these amazing works of art are created. It's really impressive! Their website puts it best to answer your question, "Will you tell me more!?" We're a diverse group of people, artists, activists, healers, tinkerers. We talk, we laugh, we eat great food & drink great wine, sometimes we disagree (passionately) & sometimes we agree (equally passionately) & it's all part of the same gift of being alive together. Our wish is that other people experience this amazing world we live in as a world of imagination & possibility & healing. We believe our stories do that. (& that's not just StoryPeople stories, but all our stories...) We believe (fiercely) in the power of stories, not because they're our stories, but because it is valuable & right to protect the precious connections between people.
