My favorite local restaurants

The West End Café is truly a local institution... many of the staff have worked there for 20+ years. The food is terrific, and ranges from simple and inexpensive (sandwiches, salads, soup) to high end cuisine in their ever-changing dinner menu. The ambiance is low-key and friendly, and the service is always impeccable. Plus, a great wine list.

Art and History

Reynolda is a historic home built by RJ Reynolds at the start of the 20th century. The home and furnishings are gorgeous, and there's also a wonderful collection of American Art along with rotating exhibits. Best of all, you can walk the trails on the grounds for free, miles of walking through woods and fields in the heart of the city.

If you are into history even a little bit, you must visit Old Salem while you're here! Old Salem is like Colonial Williamsburg, only a bit smaller. It's a living neighborhood of historic buildings from the 1700s - 1800s, the original Moravian settlement that became Winston-Salem. It's a wonderful day trip, and be sure to have lunch in the Old Salem Tavern.

Shopping

If you like vintage, you'll love Elizabeth's. They have an amazing collection of furniture and home items. Much of what I purchased for my AirBnB came from Elizabeth's! There's also a friendly dog on the premises if you're missing your pooch.

Brunch!

Fourth Street (as locals call it) is a great all-around restaurant, but their brunch is special. They have a classic line-up of brunch favorites, all at affordable prices in a cozy, relaxed atmosphere. I love sitting by the fire place in cold weather.

Brunch and lunch only, and it's the best. I'm addicted to the Huevos Rancheros, the best I've ever eaten (the addition of barbecue makes it amazing). The menu is diverse but not overwhelming, and everything is a modern classic. Always excellent service and a full bar as well.

Hiking and Outdoors

Pilot Mountain is the easiest mountain hiking to access from Winston-Salem, just a half hour drive away up US-52 N. The park surrounds the Pilot Mountain bald, where you can watch rock climbers do their thing. Hikes range from easy to strenuous, so you can pick according to your level of ability or interest, or simply drive to the top and enjoy the view. You can also visit nearby Mt. Airy, birthplace of Andy Griffith, and the inspiration for Mayberry and the Andy Griffith Show. It's fun... like stepping back in time.

Hanging Rock State Park is about 45 minutes from Winston-Salem, near the quaint mountain town of Danbury (a great spot to stop for a bit to eat before or after your hike). Hanging Rock has several wonderful trails ranging in difficulty, as well as a lovely swimming pond in summer.

Stone Mountain is a bit of a drive, about 90 minutes away, but totally worth it. The loop hike (strenuous) takes you through Eastern hardwood forests, a restored historic farm, past waterfalls, and over the stone balds that give the mountain it's name. The views are incredible.
