Bars/Pubs

Soma is a local institution among the young, and nearly all visitors to Pristina end up here at some point. The shady garden hums with activity at lunchtime, while the red-brick industrial-chic interior is lined with bookshelves and has a relaxed vibe. Food combines various tastes of the Mediterranean, including tuna salad, beef carpaccio, grilled fish, steaks and burgers. There's a terrific selection of books and vinyl on sale and the central bar area is one of the best places to drink in town (Source: Lonely Planet, 2017).

'Day and night', a bookshop-cafe-bar-performance space, is a home away from home for bookish expats and locals alike. There's a great selection of books in English, strong espresso, excellent cocktails, friendly English-speaking staff and occasional live music in the evenings, including jazz. Unusually for meat-loving Kosovo, Dit' e Nat' serves a few vegetarian light lunches and snacks (Source: Lonely Planet, 2017).

Originally opened in 2002, Tirona is located in a street locally known as “Te kafet e rakise” (Rakija cafes) which is only two minutes away from the main boulevard Mother Theresa. This is a small street in Prishtina that has always been famous for the little bars that are on both sides of the road. During the summer it is super overcrowded inside the bars, in the terrace and in the street, so it has a very vibrant and lively vibe. (Source: Spotted by Locals, 2019). Note: you haven't been to Kosovo if you haven't tried rakia!

Entertainment

Thirty years after being shut down, the cinema located in the old Army House returns as Kino Armata with film screenings and a variety of activities for film and music buffs. The cinema closed between 1988 and 1999 due to the political and social situation in the country, which deteriorated rapidly after the revocation of Kosovo’s autonomy in 1989 and particularly once the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s began (Source: Prishtina Insight, 2018).

Germia Park is a large beautiful park located in the east part of the city of Prishtina. Its endless forests, well maintained paths, fresh air, and the spitting distance from the city make it an attractive place to spend a nice quiet afternoon or weekend. In addition, a large swimming pool is situated in the entrance of the park. Skiing is another activity that can be performed there during winter, though there are no ski lifts or other facilities (Source: View Kosova, 2018).

Prizren: home of religious tolerance, qebapa (cavapi) and one of the top international documentary and short film festivals in the world, Dokufest. Seated at the foot of the Shar mountains and close to the Rahovec (Orahovac) wine region, Kosovo’s second city packs a heavy punch with its rich history, traditional handicraft shops and gastronomic delights. Mix that with incredible nearby nature and a renowned summer film festival, and you have a ‘must-see’ destination to add to your Balkan travel itinerary (Source: Lonely Planet, 2015).

Sightseeing

This wonderful annex of the Museum of Kosovo is located in two beautifully preserved Ottoman houses enclosed in a large walled garden. The English-speaking staff will give you a fascinating tour of both properties and point out the various unique pieces of clothing, weaponry, jewellery and household items on display in each. There's no better introduction to Kosovar culture (Source: Lonely Planet, 2017). If you are in the neighbourhood, do pass by the green market. Men and women from surrounding villages travel to the city market everyday to sell their fresh fruits, vegetables and dairy products. Absolutely delicious!

Easily one of Pristina's most notable buildings, the National Library, completed in 1982 by Croatian Andrija Mutnjakovic, has to be seen to be believed (think gelatinous eggs wearing armour). It's in the centre of a pleasant green area, one of the few things approaching a public park in the centre of Pristina (Source: Lonely Planet, 2017). An absolute must for everyone!

Nightlife

‘M’ was formerly an ordinary residential house. It was left empty for 2 years until a close relative of the house owners took it upon himself to transform it into a club and cultural hub. ‘M’ organizes a wide range of musical and cultural events, so regardless of your taste, you will be able to find something that suits you. Besides local famous DJs and musicians who perform there, ‘M’ gives an opportunity to people like you and me to come and experiment by playing music. And this is one of the characteristics that distinguishes ‘M’ from other places (Source: Spotted by Locals, 2019).

Food scene

Tifanny's is by now a Prishtina institution. Meals begin with rounds of fresh oven-baked bread that is crusty on the outside and fluffy on the inside. For a heavier meat experience, the grilled meats platter is a good choice. A sizeable combination of chicken kebabs and pieces of veal, all grilled right in front of your eyes. A dish to order during lunchtime is the veal soup. It is served in a huge old-fashioned tureen, and with chunks of meat, vegetables and rice as it floats in a lightly seasoned broth. It is one of the restaurant’s simplest dishes, and also one of the tastiest (Souce: Prishtina Insight, 2016).
