What to do in Redlands?

When exploring the town of Redlands, please make sure to enjoy the downtown area. Just a short 2-mile drive, charming Downtown Redlands is a modern meets old-Fashioned blast from the past. From bougie boutiques, to a privately own Children’s toy shop, State Street is the heart of Redlands. Recently, art instillations have been popping up seasonally to include Umbrella Alley – a popular social media picture taking destination. Please look up Aboutredlands dot com for a schedule of monthly events. If you’re our guests on Saturday Morning, State Street also hosts the weekly Farmer’s Market. ‘Saturday Morning Market’ is a street fair style market where vendors sell everything from clothing, to collectibles, to locally grown produce / flowers, and food truck feasts. It is very popular among the locals. Redlands is an art town and downtown Redlands hosts the quarterly Redlands Art Walk – another street fair style uprising where guests can enjoy live art installations, music, performances, beer garden, food, and purchase custom art pieces from the many talented artists in town. The Red Dirt Art Festival is also another popular haven for the creative and collective types. Both are free to the public. Are you a fan of free summer concerts? Every weekend from June to September, the Redlands Bowl Association puts on events at the last standing Free Venue in the United States. Every year, the lineup changes, but you can rest assured that the Military band, and the Community Musical will fill the seats. No reserved seating is allowed, so grab some snacks and wine and enjoy family time while waiting for the shows to start. –Not Pet Friendly. If it’s church you’re looking to attend, Redlands is rumored to have more churches per capita than anywhere else in the United States. The City of Redlands recently opened a new Skate Park. Community members lobbied for and raised funds for this park for 10 years, so it is a very big deal. It is located at Sylvan Park, it’s free, and open to the public during park hours. Our Smiley Public Library and Lincoln Memorial Shrine are worth a visit for the history buffs. The Lincoln Shrine has the largest collection of Lincoln memorabilia on the west coast. Our library founders, Albert and Alfred Smiley were famous teachers turned real estate tycoons on the east coast. After moving here in the late 1800’s, the brothers quickly became well known in Redlands for their philanthropy and civic service, becoming known as Redlands’ “patron saints.” The twins led the effort to fund and build the A. K. Smiley Memorial Library, donating parks and public spaces and beautifying the growing city of Redlands – giving their fellow citizens opportunities for culture and enjoyment that continue today Citrus Plaza is just a short 10-minute drive away. There, you can fill your shopping bags and bellies with mainstreamed Chain Restaurants and shops. Also located at Citrus Plaza is a Harkins Movie Theater with reclining leather seats. Look Movie Grill is just three miles away and us Redlanders are excited that the bathrooms are finally on the Ground level. – Inside joke: The last theater owners put the only bathrooms on the upper level where we had to climb a mountain of stairs to use them. It was also the only theater in town for many, many years. If you feel the need to leave Redlands and explore, we are just about an hour in all directions from desirable destinations. Redlands is the ½ way point between L.A. and Palm Springs; each are one hour away without traffic. About an hour North and a very windy drive, you will find yourself in the Mountain Destinations of Big Bear Lake and Lake Arrowhead. Disneyland is just over an hour away as are Newport, and Huntington Beaches. Temecula Wine Country is also an hour away. Just a stone’s throw into the hills of the next city over, you will find yourself in Oak Glen when the Apples are abundant, and the Pie is delicious.

Favorite Parks

Thanks to the Smiley Brothers, Redlands’ expansive parks are a point of pride for the community. There are at least 1-2 parks that serve each neighborhood. Every park offers a little something different from the next. Maybe you would like to explore some of the 15 parks in town? For town events including the Chili Cook-off, Optimist Car Show, Octoberfest, and the 4th of July, Sylvan Park is the place to be. Our top two parks happen to be less than 2 miles from the Favorable Flat. 1.Prospect Park: One mile from home, this park hosts one of the oldest orange groves in the nation. It also has many different walking paths and on a clear day, there is not a better view at a park in town from its look out points. David and I were married at one of these lookouts and it will forever hold a special place in our childhood, past, present, and future. We grew up playing in this park and take weekly trips there with our children. Tucked into her heart of this park is a small outdoor amphitheater where the Redlands theater Festival is held during the summer months yearly. You can buy tickets to the show at the walk-up ticket booth. Don’t forget your bug spray! While you wait for the show to start, just a quick stroll down the path is the famous Kimberly Crest Mansion. The grounds are pristinely manicured year-round. While wondering the grounds, peek into the ponds to see the spectacular HUGE koi fish and lily pads. 2.Ford Park: 1.5 miles from home, this park is the typical, ‘all-American’, family park. It boasts many acres of lush green grass, tennis courts, smash ball courts, an expansive Frisbee golf course, children’s play area with swings, 2 duck ponds, picnic areas throughout, walking paths, and even a dog park.

Breweries and a Distillery

11 years ago, a small-town brewery popped up. We’ve watched it grow and grow into the worldwide phenomena it is now. Redlands is proud to announce that Hangar 24 beer started right here in Redlands. The Orange Wheat and Betty IPA are tasty treats. Hanger 24 is also where David and I had our first date and the rest is history 😊. Since then, a few other breweries have become staples in our community. Ritual Brewing Co – known for their Ritual Red, provides a vast selection of delicious beers and some of the best corn-hole in town. Escape Craft Brewery - known for their ever-changing seasonal flavors provides a unique selection of micro brewed beers and a children’s play area. All three of the above-mentioned breweries are family friendly. A few years ago, one of our hometown heroes and veterans, J. Riley, started his own distillery and has won national recognition at whiskey award shows for his California Clear Whiskey. He has since expanded into distilling Gin and vodka.
