Roy's is quite the local icon! Rarely off the beach at Bardsea, queues are a regular occurance. Look for the yellow and white van. Try the Blackcurrant and Licorice... or one of the other 22 flavours... As recommended by Hairy Biker Dave Myers.

This car park can get quite busy in peak times, but quite often you can be the only ones there. Toilets available, and just a few yards from the car park is Coniston's shores. Launch kayaks here!

Arts & Culture

Everybody welcome. 'The Temple' as it is known locally, is worthy of a visit at any time of year. From peaceful woodland walks to the beach, to guided meditations in a beautiful temple and tours around the old Conishead Priory. The cafe is also worth mentioning, with plenty of room to sit outside and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Ulverston is the birthplace of Stan Laurel. The museum is currently housed inside The Roxy cinema. Photograph chance: the building in front of The Roxy, The Coronation Hall, has a Graham Ibbeson statue of Stan and Olly by its doors, unveiled by Ken Dodd in 2009. Well worth a quick walk round the building to see!

Perfect for rainy days, a trip to Barrow-in-Furness to see the BAE sheds and maybe a sneak at a submarine or warship. Opposite the sheds is The Dock Museum... Entry by donation as I write, the museum also hosts art exhibitions, vintage pop-ups etc. from time to time.

The market town of Ulverston is yet to be invaded by too many 'high street' stores... It's more 'not on the high street' that you find here! Of note are the numerous independent tea and coffee shops.
