Places to go

Spending time in town and interested in doing more than just fishing? Check out some of these suggestions!
With the deep water harbor and the amount of fishing charters that operate out of this area the spit is a essential part of the town of Homer. Even though I would consider the heart of town more up along Pioneer ave, Homer wouldn't be what it is with out the business and tourism that the Spit supports. The Spit is a naturally occurring 4.5-mile long piece of land jutting out into Kachemak Bay. It is also home to the Homer Boat Harbor and the famous Salty Dog Saloon. Additional features and attractions include the seafarers memorial, the Fishing Lagoon, which is an artificial "fishing hole", gift shops and restaurants. From this spot you can usually spot eagles, sea otters and seals right off the beach.

There are several beach access areas in town, a local favorite is called Bishops beach. This area is a bit more sheltered by the main land than the Spit beach and is often less windy, it is popular for walks and beach combing. If you like to go tide pooling plan your trips at low tide for your best bet to find sea critters and treasures.

Islands and Ocean Visitor Center is a comprehensive establishment on the Bypass that houses the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, dedicated to understanding and conserving the marine environment. Their indoor exhibits feature a Bering Sea bird rookery in the Seabird Theatre, dramatic re-creations and Aleutian artifacts, and a field camp where you can delve into the fascinating work of biologists. Many of the Islands and Ocean Center's interpretive programs are outdoor experiences. Visitors and locals are guided down to the Beluga Slough, just a short stroll down a slope, to explore the beach. The trail passes through a little woods where it's not unusual to sight moose and other wildlife. The center also guides hikes down through the wetlands to Bishop's Beach to stroll the sand and watch for sea life like whales, otters, sea lions and more. In the visitor center, the naturalists offer information and tips on wildlife viewing, refuge information and points of interest. A self-guided tour of the Center features sculpted re-creations of wildlife and settings, interactive stations and a simulated journey through the nation's most far reaching wildlife refuge. They also have a theatre where they feature award-winning movies such as "Journey of the Tiglax." The Tiglax is their boat that cares for wildlife in the nature preserves.

The Salty Dawg started out as one of the first cabins built in 1897, soon after Homer became a town site. It served as the first post office, a railroad station, a grocery store, and a coal mining office for twenty years. In 1909 a second building was constructed, and it served as a school house, post office, grocery store. And at one time, it housed three adults and eleven children. It was acquired in the late 1940’s by Chuck Abbott to be used as an office for Standard Oil Company. In April of 1957, he opened it as the Salty Dawg Saloon. The late 1950’s produced a change for the Salty Dawg Saloon by joining this building to it. The Alaska Territory became the 49th state of the union in January 1959. Earl Hillstrand, the late State Representative, purchased it in 1960. After the March 1964 “Good Friday” earthquake, he moved the structure to its present location. The distinctive lighthouse tower was added to cover a water storage tank, thus completing one of Homer’s more historical and recognizable landmarks. The Salty Dawg Saloon that we know today is owned and operated by John Warren.
