Food scene

There are lots of local attractions/activities (e.g., Split Rock Falls near New Russia, Little Falls swimming hole in Wadhams, Dogwood Bakery for pizza on Friday nights, CATS trails for hiking, Pink Pig Cafe in Essex for breakfast, ferry to Burlington out of Essex...). Nice restaurant in Elizabethtown: Deer‘s Head Inn. Or on the way to Keene/Keene Valley, The Baxter Mountain Grill. In Keene Valley we like to eat at the Ausable Inn or Noonmark Diner (famous for pies). In Wadhams, Dogwood Bread Company Bakery. Famous for pizza on Friday nights. Call ahead to order--they sell out. Westport Hotel & Tavern for dinner and drinks. Westport Yacht Club for good views and good food. Winton's 1898 Tavern Jambs Coffee We love the Pink Pig Cafe (breakfast/brunch) and the Old Dock, both close to the Essex Ferry.

Sight Seeing

Ausable Chasm. Here is a great place to hike, rock climb, or do river rafting/tubing. 2144 US-9, Ausable Chasm, NY 12911
This waterfall can’t be seen from the road and isn’t well marked, but it is basically a roadside waterfall, and getting a view from above is fairly easy. Access for Split Rock Falls is from a pull-off located on the southern side of Route 9. It can be found at the following coordinates: 44.124223, -73.657996. You can go north on Rt. 9 from I-87, exit 30. Or, from Elizabethtown, go south on Rt. 9. There is no sign. Listen for the sound of the falls and look for the car pull off area. There is also an outhouse at the road. From this pull-off, follow the unmarked, but obvious paths towards the stream. A steep, but relatively easy to manage hillside takes you down to the base of the falls and the best viewpoints. Wear sturdy shoes. There is no designated trail down to the bottom of the falls.
