A Kentish Town boozer much-loved across London that has been around for over a century. It's not big, but there's a conservatory at the back and seats outside.

Good for families, this 16th-century pub on Hampstead Heath was once the home of infamous highway man, Dick Turpin and has changed very little over the past 400 or so years. A great place to end a walk on the Heath or for a Sunday roast, it has good food and a huge beer garden. It's also the site of my first ever job (as a waitress) so please be nice to the staff!

This is my favourite pub in London. Popular with local regulars, it's more a place for a quiet pint than a rowdy night out, focusing on local ale and ciders from independent UK breweries. It also sells pork pies and sandwiches but don't expect much more.

If you're looking for a little busier pub in Kentish Town which is open later, sometimes with music and dancing, I recommend the Abbey. For anything later the 1am on a weekend though, you'll need to head a little south into Camden.

Food scene

This lovely restaurant does very good French food but is also a very nice place to go for a drink. They have happy hour between 4 and 6pm most evenings, and if you can get a seat on one of the tables in front it's a great place to people watch into the evening. They also have a small bar a little further down Fortess Road called 'Tabac' which serves French wine and cheese.

Neighbourhoods

Camden is known for its live music and lively market. The bars and pubs stay open late and are always filled with locals and tourists. Whilst its punk history has been largely sanitised, it's still a little rough around the edges. Sit by the lock to eat food from the market stalls, head into the stables for vintage shopping, stop by Cyberdog just because it's part of the whole experience. Best bars -- the Black Heart (goth), Proud and Joe's, best pubs -- the Hawley Arms, The Spread Eagle, the Dublin Castle for live music or head a little north for the Colonel Fawcett for something a little quieter. Avoid the area right outside of the tube station.
