Southeast of the city, the Billabong Sanctuary wildlife park is home to koalas, wombats and crocodiles. Offshore, Magnetic Island has coral reefs and a national park full of wildlife.
Townsville is also the home-base for the North Queensland Cowboys, an Australian professional rugby league football club.
They compete in Australia's premier rugby league competition, the National Rugby League.
