The Off-grid itHouse brings together raw industrial aesthetics with the tactics of green design to forge a new home in the sunbaked wilds of the California high desert.
The Off-grid itHouse is an architecturally significant house, recently noted by Dwell as one of the 'Best Homes in America' and in the Los Angeles Times as one of the best houses of all time in Southern California. The Off-grid itHouse is one of 10 IT Houses built in California, which have received much acclaim such as the Western Home award sponsored by Sunset magazine. This is the prototype for the pre-engineered system known as the IT House.
The house is off-grid, powered by solar panels for energy and hot water, and is located in a pristine remote valley in the beautiful California high desert. The house observes key green principals of smaller footprint, minimal disturbance to the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape, use of renewable resources, and living simply and minimally.
Located in Pioneertown, CA, nearby several unique attractions, Joshua Tree National Park, Pappy and Harriets Pioneertown Palace, local museums and art venues such as the Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum, the Integratron, and other seasonal events.
The setting of the house is remote and serene, a quiet refuge from everything, free from distractions. Amazing views and vistas in all directions. There is a small trailor (often referred to as the breaking bad trailor) in the view to the west. However guests should be reassured that it belongs to a poet/singer song writer who uses it as a weekend muse occasionally when they are not at their ranch in Joshua Tree.
Intentionally there is no television and no wifi so that one can truly experience being in a place of extreme natural beauty, and take note of the play of light and shadow, and other natural phenomena.
Perfect for design or green aficionados, writers or those needing a secluded getaway.
It is recommended that guests arrive before sundown in order to find the house. The house is in a remote location.
We are now offering fresh pressed juice delivery to the Off-grid it house. Guests are able to be have fresh juices delivered daily by local Joshua Tree juice guru Angela de la Agua.

Beautiful space and Linda is very helpful host. The breaking bad trailer parked above house is kinda creepy only because the house is so remote and the mind wanders to who is inside watching the glass house.
We stayed here for the first part of our honeymoon and cannot say enough about our experience. In the weeks leading up to our trip, we were telling everyone we knew about the itHouse and how excited we were to experience being off the grid, especially after such a hectic few weeks leading up to the wedding. The reality of what Linda has created went over and above our expectations. It was the perfect way to disconnect from everything and just relax with each other.
The directions Linda provided were spot on, but wouldn't necessarily recommend coming in the dark - it might be a bit tricky to find the house and lock-box, and there's something to be said for arriving for sunset. The house really is in the middle of nowhere, yet still close to Pappy & Harriet's, Joshua Tree, Integratron, etc.
The aesthetics of the home are so tastefully done - at the end of the trip, I was noting down some of the brands. Everything was comfortable, clean and beautiful.
We also took Linda up on arranging for juices to be delivered by Angela and are still raving about them. Highly, highly recommend! We did the 5 pack and was more than enough for the two of us to have juices over the course of our trip.
Thank you Linda for everything - we had a great time and hope to visit again.
We loved our stay at the itHouse. It was the perfect detox from the work week. The setting is beautiful and remote. The house is very well done and the perfect size for one or two couples. It's a great home base for hiking or just sitting and reading a book while watching the day drift by.
Linda was a great host and the directions were very clear. We recommend it highly.
P.S. Be sure to take advantage of Angela's fresh raw juices during your stay. She delivered them to the house before we arrived and they were the perfect compliment to our stay.
What can I say about this house that hasn't already been said by others? The location is amazing - just secluded enough to make you feel like you're truly in the middle of nowhere, but not so secluded as to make a city dweller like me feel too uncomfortable. And it's nice having a decent-sized town just about 15 minutes away, in case you don't buy enough firewood the first time around!
We spent most of our daytime in the National Park, and we didn't have any issues with loss of power in the evenings or at night, even after a good amount of cooking and running the dishwasher. Having enough hot water for four people to shower after a long day of hiking was a bit of a challenge, but we were able to make it work as long as we all used our strictest water conservation techniques (turn it off when soaping up, make haste, etc.). The indoor fireplace was great and did a really good job of heating up the entire house - we used the outdoor fireplace one night, as well, and those who stayed in the larger bedroom felt pretty overheated that night.
As others have said, there is no freezer in the kitchen, but there is a good-sized fridge. Someone mentioned being able to see an RV parked near the property - we noticed it, too, but it was far enough away that it didn't bother us (and it's not parked in an area that would be able to see into either bedroom). I do think it's important to mention the dirt road, though - it can be pretty rough in some areas, so if you don't have a truck or SUV, just be aware. Our Jetta wagon did fine, but I definitely wouldn't want to drive down that road in a Smart car or anything that's low to the ground (it's about two miles of dirt road).
So, if you have the opportunity, stay here!! Even just three nights in the house is such a great experience.
The house and the setting are fantastic. It was all better than we expected. A great place to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. We would plan to come back again !
This is an amazing house!
Thank you so much : )
Linda's home is extraordinary and deserves all of the glowing reviews to date. From the secluded location and gorgeous external landscape, to the impeccable, minimalist design aesthetic of the interior, I would highly recommend this amazing place for a desert getaway. Beyond enjoying the panoramic views and hiking in the immediate vicinity, you don't need much else in the way of entertainment, but the house also boasts a thoughtful, well-stocked kitchen, a great book collection (particularly exciting selection if you too are a visual artist), board games, and two different fireplaces. Linda is a gracious host, responding quickly and providing a nice welcome packet of info for the house and surrounding area. We were sad to leave, and hope to visit again.
Every time is slightly different yet the same when it comes to reconnecting with nature, self and source. It is a magical healing place. I also really enjoyed doing the juice cleanse it really added to my experience, Angela "the juice lady" is a wonderful being and makes nourishing potions for mind body and spirit. Thank you for the suggestion Linda.
Not only is this an amazing house, but it's an amazing location. You have to drive a few miles up a dirt road to make sure you're completely off the grid. No cell service, no internet, no outside world (except for the real outside world).
We spent our time enjoying the fire, playing old-fashioned word-games and drinking wine. Can't imagine a better place to spend a weekend.
One day, I hope to build my very own itHouse somewhere half as amazing as Joshua Tree.
What an incredible experience! I love Joshua Tree already, but to stay in a place like this AND go do Joshua Tree... just awesome. I took my boyfriend here for a surprise and he gave it an "A+". We are both designers, so this was right up our alley :)
All the other reviews are spot on. A couple things to note: If you have the option to bring an SUV/Off-road-ish vehicle, do so. The road to the house is dirt and treated with ridges and there are some rough spots. It's not going to kill your car, but like I said, if you have the option... We came in the winter time, and like Linda had advised, power is quite scarce. It was by no means inconvenient, though. We ran out of power twice, but it was also quite cloudy during the day, so the solar panels couldn't harness a lot of energy.
The views, and the ambiance of the house's setting is unforgettable. What a great set up. Well done, Linda!
You'll enjoy your time here, for sure.
