The Off-grid itHouse brings together raw industrial aesthetics with the tactics of green design to forge a new home in the sunbaked wilds of the California high desert.
The Off-grid itHouse is an architecturally significant house, recently noted by Dwell as one of the 'Best Homes in America' and in the Los Angeles Times as one of the best houses of all time in Southern California. The Off-grid itHouse is one of 10 IT Houses built in California, which have received much acclaim such as the Western Home award sponsored by Sunset magazine. This is the prototype for the pre-engineered system known as the IT House.
The house is off-grid, powered by solar panels for energy and hot water, and is located in a pristine remote valley in the beautiful California high desert. The house observes key green principals of smaller footprint, minimal disturbance to the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape, use of renewable resources, and living simply and minimally.
Located in Pioneertown, CA, nearby several unique attractions, Joshua Tree National Park, Pappy and Harriets Pioneertown Palace, local museums and art venues such as the Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum, the Integratron, and other seasonal events.
The setting of the house is remote and serene, a quiet refuge from everything, free from distractions. Amazing views and vistas in all directions. There is a small trailor (often referred to as the breaking bad trailor) in the view to the west. However guests should be reassured that it belongs to a poet/singer song writer who uses it as a weekend muse occasionally when they are not at their ranch in Joshua Tree.
Intentionally there is no television and no wifi so that one can truly experience being in a place of extreme natural beauty, and take note of the play of light and shadow, and other natural phenomena.
Perfect for design or green aficionados, writers or those needing a secluded getaway.
It is recommended that guests arrive before sundown in order to find the house. The house is in a remote location.
We are now offering fresh pressed juice delivery to the Off-grid it house. Guests are able to be have fresh juices delivered daily by local Joshua Tree juice guru Angela de la Agua.
interaction is primarily via messaging

Epic house! Like stepping onto another planet. We had a photo shoot there, it was spectacular. Everything was just as we hoped for. Great hostess!
WOW! Linda, thank you for being the conduit for a truly rare opportunity to connect face to face with the incredible Californian High desert. After driving 6000 miles from NY to Southern California on an Art & Architecture pilgrimage taking in a total of 16 US States & studying iconic works by such brilliant architects as Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies Van Der Rohe, Phillip Johnson, Rick Joy etc etc, we must say your Off-grid itHouse was without question one of the highlights thanks to its architectural integrity, respect for its environment & its unique ability to act like a viewfinder to the living breathing desert, its animals, reptiles & changing kaleidoscope of light & shade.
We very much look forward to returning some day soon.
Steven and Maya.
Unreal experience. Roughly 3-4 miles drive on a fairly bumpy dirt road but worth every moment once you're in there. Will definitely be on a short list of places to go back to when I need to get away from everything, as there is definitely no reception for miles.
I don't even know where to begin. The itHouse is a dream. Waking up in the master bedroom couldn't have been more serene. Every single detail about this house has inspired me to re-evaluate how I'm living and how I can do it better.
We arrived on a cloudy day to a powerless house, which Linda warned us about. She helped us through getting the generator up and running which brought the electricity back quite quickly and for the rest of our stay. The way this house runs makes you appreciate what we all take for granted every single day and really forces you to conserve energy. If only we were all like this in our everyday lives. Imagine the relief it would give to the planet?!
If you're looking to truly disconnect and re-center yourself, this is the place for you. If you can't live without TV or the Internet on your vacation, you won't find what you're looking for here. It's so remote that you have to climb a hill to get service, so you go to bed under the light of the stars instead of the glow of your phone and you wake up and quickly realize social media won't be the first thing you're going to see - instead you get the 360 degree view of the desert wilderness - lizards and rabbits and land squirrels right outside your window - OH MY. How refreshing!
I dream of the day I get to go back. Thank you for building this truly special, thoughtful and gorgeous house.
My now husband and I eloped with some family members at the IThouse. We had an amazing time and everything worked out very well. Linda was a huge help and provided thorough info about the property, parking and local spots. Our pictures are beyond gorgeous!
