The Off-grid itHouse brings together raw industrial aesthetics with the tactics of green design to forge a new home in the sunbaked wilds of the California high desert.
The Off-grid itHouse is an architecturally significant house, recently noted by Dwell as one of the 'Best Homes in America' and in the Los Angeles Times as one of the best houses of all time in Southern California. The Off-grid itHouse is one of 10 IT Houses built in California, which have received much acclaim such as the Western Home award sponsored by Sunset magazine. This is the prototype for the pre-engineered system known as the IT House.
The house is off-grid, powered by solar panels for energy and hot water, and is located in a pristine remote valley in the beautiful California high desert. The house observes key green principals of smaller footprint, minimal disturbance to the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape, use of renewable resources, and living simply and minimally.
Located in Pioneertown, CA, nearby several unique attractions, Joshua Tree National Park, Pappy and Harriets Pioneertown Palace, local museums and art venues such as the Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum, the Integratron, and other seasonal events.
The setting of the house is remote and serene, a quiet refuge from everything, free from distractions. Amazing views and vistas in all directions. There is a small trailor (often referred to as the breaking bad trailor) in the view to the west. However guests should be reassured that it belongs to a poet/singer song writer who uses it as a weekend muse occasionally when they are not at their ranch in Joshua Tree.
Intentionally there is no television and no wifi so that one can truly experience being in a place of extreme natural beauty, and take note of the play of light and shadow, and other natural phenomena.
Perfect for design or green aficionados, writers or those needing a secluded getaway.
It is recommended that guests arrive before sundown in order to find the house. The house is in a remote location.
We are now offering fresh pressed juice delivery to the Off-grid it house. Guests are able to be have fresh juices delivered daily by local Joshua Tree juice guru Angela de la Agua.
interaction is primarily via messaging

Our stay at the Off-grid itHouse was wonderful! The setting is stunning and the structure is quite impressive. The capacity of solar panels also impressed us as we had no need to compromise whatsoever. The house is located relatively close to Pioneertown, but certainly far enough from everything and everyone to maintain a piece and quite that every city dweller has forgotten existed. We thoroughly recommend the Off-grid itHouse if you are planning a trip to Joshua Tree. You simply can't go wrong.
We had the most magical time at itHouse! There was a little bouquet of fresh wild flowers to greet us and we felt very at home there. The architecture creates an experience of really living in the dramatic Joshua Tree landscape - which is really the whole point of being there. And not having phone or internet really allows one to rest and renew the spirit. I loved it and would go back again!
This is a truly magical place to stay. A glass box nestled into the hillside and completely surrounded by nature, it was a totally dreamy weekend escape. Lighting a fire and watching the sunset on the desert landscape was amazing and surreal.
Everything is perfectly appointed and thoughtfully designed, and it's clear that Linda has a discerning eye for details. I highly recommend the It House for anyone seeking a visually appealing and secluded desert retreat.
This house has the fascinating philosophy of being perfectly embedded in the wonderful landscape. The elaborate interior emphasizes the connection between the habitants and the surrounding. We enjoyed the intellectual atmosphere and the silence. Thank you for the opportunity to share this house with guests! Georg and Stefan
Being hosted by an important American architect in her personal, award-winning residence is a rare opportunity. After our lovely two-night stay in the Pioneertown IT House, we had the pleasure of sharing a meal and spending several hours with Linda and her team in her early Craig Elwood designed LA home and office. Later on the flight home, we decided to accept the opportunity to work with Linda to create her next IT House on a hilltop in the Chihuahuan desert overlooking Marfa, TX. If you value responsibility, honesty, intellect, and beauty, then you will be enriched by your stay at the IT House.
Beyond perfect. What an amazing way to spend time away from it all. the house and location are beyond amazing. Linda was super hospitable and honestly I wish we could of stayed for an entire month. Can't wait to make several more trips back to the house.
My only complaint is that I couldn't take more time off from work and stay longer.
