The Off-grid itHouse brings together raw industrial aesthetics with the tactics of green design to forge a new home in the sunbaked wilds of the California high desert.
The Off-grid itHouse is an architecturally significant house, recently noted by Dwell as one of the 'Best Homes in America' and in the Los Angeles Times as one of the best houses of all time in Southern California. The Off-grid itHouse is one of 10 IT Houses built in California, which have received much acclaim such as the Western Home award sponsored by Sunset magazine. This is the prototype for the pre-engineered system known as the IT House.
The house is off-grid, powered by solar panels for energy and hot water, and is located in a pristine remote valley in the beautiful California high desert. The house observes key green principals of smaller footprint, minimal disturbance to the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape, use of renewable resources, and living simply and minimally.
Located in Pioneertown, CA, nearby several unique attractions, Joshua Tree National Park, Pappy and Harriets Pioneertown Palace, local museums and art venues such as the Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum, the Integratron, and other seasonal events.
The setting of the house is remote and serene, a quiet refuge from everything, free from distractions. Amazing views and vistas in all directions. There is a small trailor (often referred to as the breaking bad trailor) in the view to the west. However guests should be reassured that it belongs to a poet/singer song writer who uses it as a weekend muse occasionally when they are not at their ranch in Joshua Tree.
Intentionally there is no television and no wifi so that one can truly experience being in a place of extreme natural beauty, and take note of the play of light and shadow, and other natural phenomena.
Perfect for design or green aficionados, writers or those needing a secluded getaway.
It is recommended that guests arrive before sundown in order to find the house. The house is in a remote location.
We are now offering fresh pressed juice delivery to the Off-grid it house. Guests are able to be have fresh juices delivered daily by local Joshua Tree juice guru Angela de la Agua.
interaction is primarily via messaging

the house was perfect, beautiful, great, amazing, just what we needed. it was quiet, relatively easy to get to (even in our tiny chevy spark - though a larger car in case of rain would be good) and the stars that came out at night were plentiful.
the pantry was well packed (we picked up some black pepper at the joshua tree natural food store for the empty grinder :)), library had interesting books and an awesome escher jigsaw puzzle that we weren't able to complete by checkout, so we'll have to come back and solve it once and for all!
having all the windows open allowed for cooling breezes even when the temp reached over 100F was wonderful. there was a second bedroom that i didn't even existed, the amenities were top notch, and the home was clean. minor detail: ants somehow found their way into the bathroom the first night but for the most part left us alone all other nights.
linda emailed me all the tips to the house prior to the trip, and we found no reason to contact her during our stay. no cell phone reception was really nice, which might have posed a problem had we needed help which we luckily didn't.
my partner and i loved the space and will totally make it back for some restorative quiet time again.
The entire experience of being in this house, and in this environment, is really indescribable. It's like living in a National Park; nothing but 360 degree views of desert-scape surrounding you. And the home itself is nothing short of a dream - truly a glass box that blurs the lines between indoors and outdoors. It often feels as if there is only a roof over your head, and no walls at all. Everything about the design of the house is smart and functional, decor is beautifully thought out yet simple, proving you don't need all of those "extras" in order to live comfortably. This was truly a transcendent experience for me, and opened my eyes to a whole new modern way of living, while completely immersed in nature. It's all you could ever need or want in life, really.
We had a fantastic 3-night stay at the house. As we were on our way, Linda contacted us to let us know that there was a fire in the area. She kept us well informed and pointed us in the right direction for further news.
The house is the perfect place for relaxing - no clutter, well equipped, a beautiful panoramic view over the valley and outdoor chairs to admire it.
A unique and highly recommended experience!
Epic house! Like stepping onto another planet. We had a photo shoot there, it was spectacular. Everything was just as we hoped for. Great hostess!
WOW! Linda, thank you for being the conduit for a truly rare opportunity to connect face to face with the incredible Californian High desert. After driving 6000 miles from NY to Southern California on an Art & Architecture pilgrimage taking in a total of 16 US States & studying iconic works by such brilliant architects as Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies Van Der Rohe, Phillip Johnson, Rick Joy etc etc, we must say your Off-grid itHouse was without question one of the highlights thanks to its architectural integrity, respect for its environment & its unique ability to act like a viewfinder to the living breathing desert, its animals, reptiles & changing kaleidoscope of light & shade.
We very much look forward to returning some day soon.
Steven and Maya.
Unreal experience. Roughly 3-4 miles drive on a fairly bumpy dirt road but worth every moment once you're in there. Will definitely be on a short list of places to go back to when I need to get away from everything, as there is definitely no reception for miles.
This house is absolut treasure in a untouched inviriment. It's a treat and an esthetic gift. I had very special two night at the house for my birth day and will be returning back! Thank you for hosting and sharing your house!
