Nata come spazio per le prediche dei frati agostiniani, piazza Santo Spirito è stata spesso usata per feste e manifestazioni di vario tipo ed è l'unica piazza dell'Oltrarno dove ancora oggi si svolge ogni mattina un mercato, affiancato da mercati domenicali di prodotti naturali ed oggetti d'epoca. Qui nel corso degli anni si sono celebrati moltissimi eventi e feste: ancora oggi in piazza Santo Spirito specialmente nei periodi primaverile ed estivo si svolgono concerti e spettacoli. In questi periodo dell'anno si respira un'atmosfera unica grazie anche ai numerosi ristoranti e locali notturni che la rendono una delle piazze più vive dei Firenze. Il palazzo presenta una loggia al piano superiore, le finestre hanno delle particolari cornici con chiavi di volta e le decorazioni di un tempo (oramai andate perse) sono opera di Andrea del Sarto. A piano terra troviamo la biblioteca comunale di Firenze. Nella piazza troviamo una fontana datata 1812 che venne eretta in sostituzione di una precedente del 1556 situata anticamente nel Cenacolo di Santo Spirito. Nel centro della piazza troviamo un giardino composta da varie aiuole ed il monumento ad Cosimo Ridolfi. Spostandoci in direzione sud-est dalla piazza troviamo piazza San Felice e poco distante Palazzo Pitti ed i giardini di Boboli. Se invece ci muoviamo in direzione ovest troviamo piazza Torquato Tasso e la chiesa del Carmine; verso nord-ovest invece la piazza di Cestello dove è situata la chiesa di San Frediano in Cestello, dalla quale prende il nome. Da notare che negli ultimi anni il quartiere di Santo Spirito è diventato un luogo di ritrovo per i giovani; molti i locali, le birrerie ed i disco-pub che animano la zona fino a notte fonda.
