Higher Kerris Barn Annexe, Cornwall
This self-catering barn annexe in west Cornwall is nestled at the end of a tranquil country lane with wonderful views of the surrounding countryside, including ancient woodland and the remains of the Iron Age Chun Castle. The tower of Ding Dong stands on a ridge about 5 miles (8 kilometres) away. Being cut off from civilisation is a bit of an illusion, as we are only about a 6 minute drive to the fishing port of Newlyn (also the focus of Cornwall's first bohemian "artists' colony" in the late nineteenth century), the same distance to picturesque Mousehole and close to long sandy surfing beaches and hidden coves. If you are a fan of Poldark, several of the locations used for filming are near by!
You may hear owls and other night life and see clear starry skies. The owner lives in the main barn so is at hand to put your mind at rest if a barn owl makes a rare blood-curdling call in the quiet of night! If you are used to sleeping to the hum of traffic and other urban sounds this will be a new experience. Most visitors and friends say they sleep really well, aided also by the sea air and the five-star hotel standard bed.
The traditional Cornish barn (we think built over 200 years ago) is completely self-contained with its own garden gate leading into its own private walled garden with table and chairs and sub-tropical planting through which you access your front door. The accommodation consists of a double bedroom (queen sized bed, wardrobe, bookcase, bedside tables and a dressing table with drawers) with part of a stall wall dividing the room (may have been the milking parlour), a shower room, a separate toilet and wash-hand basin (once a sauna, not for the cows, but an addition during a short period of racy reincarnation last century!), a large living- sitting- dining area and a separate kitchen.
The living area has a wood-burner (the bedroom has a central-heating radiator fed by the main barn boiler, as is the shower and wash hand basin hot water) and a third of the large space is a raised mattress area (think Turkey or Indonesian day bed), great for snoozing on after a walk by the sea or relaxing with a book. This relaxation area was once an indoor garden and before that a pool ( the original pool is still below the floor boards). There is a sofa, table and chairs etc, a wood-burner and a small hidden fridge for cool drinks. The floor is slate with rugs, whilst the bedroom has a Devon wool carpet.
The kitchen is equipped with pots and pans, cutlery and plates etc, kettle, cafetiere, toaster, a 4 plate electric hob, an oven/microwave, a freezer, a fridge, washing machine and a dryer (there is also a portable drying frame if you wish to dry clothes close outside). The water is fine to drink but a water filter can also be supplied if you are used to one.
All bedding and towels are supplied. There are separate beach towels and a windbreak. Please note all bed linen and towels are cotton and duvet and pillows are feather.
A hairdryer is in the bedroom.
There is a digital radio, a Freeview TV with an inbuilt DVD video player which is handy during bad weather when the Freeview signal may go. At the moment there is no wi-fi as it won't travel through the very thick granite walls! Cows grumbled too! It is available if necessary in certain parts of owners barn. Good reception for most smartphones and other mobiles (better than parts of central London!).
All cleaning of the barn is done with eco-products(including bedding and towels), recycling bags are available on request if wanted. Herbs in the garden can be picked for cooking.
Owner will pop into the garden to water in hot weather whilst you are out, but if you prefer you can do it yourself. There is a hose and a water butt in the annexe garden.
There is parking for one car (the space is not suitable for camper vans but plenty of turning space for normal sized vehicles). A car is useful if you don't want to walk a mile to the main road where there are infrequent buses! One can be hired from Penzance Train Station or there are many taxi firms.
There are many places to visit so a car is pretty handy. There are, however, several rural walks from the bridle path by the barn.
If rambling is your thing, we are very close to the South West Coast Path and the whole area is dotted with prehistoric sites (stone circles, standing stones, burial chambers and hill fortifications - some over 4000 years old). The owner would be happy to suggest some walks, also the best beaches, whether for surfing, viewing basking sharks, seals and dolphins or quiet secluded coves. The outdoor Minack Theatre, St Ives and St Michael's Mount are close by, as are gardens (many National Trust) and it is an easy drive to visit the Lizard Peninsula and the area around Falmouth.
There are lots of excellent restaurants here in all price brackets using local products. Mousehole is minutes away by car and a lovely place to eat and walk in the evening.
Happy to make suggestions, also where to buy food whether in a farmers' market or local produce/organic shops.
There are also daily boat outings from Penzance to search for the wealth of marine life and birds and nearly daily day trips to The Scilly. Also many arts, crafts and music festivals and art galleries and barefoot walking trail.
It's a ideal base to explore West Cornwall or the barn can be used as a space for a personal retreat (specific arrangements can be made with the owner). The owner is a classical Yoga meditation teacher and meditation sessions/classes are available by pre-arrangement.
Am very sorry but the barn is not set up for children or dogs
It also non-smoking.
