I was born in New York City and now reside in Virginia. I have lived, studied, or taught in Chicago, Los Angeles, Providence, R.I., Virginia, Maine, Ohio, London, Oxford, and sub-Saharan Africa. I am a retired professor and continue to conduct research on Renaissance literature and culture. My wife, Pauline, is a retired psychiatric nurse. My interests include reading, hiking, and chess. My wife and I share an interest in art, theater, cinema, dance, and music, but travel ranks at the top of our leisure pursuits. I have traveled throughout Europe, North America, North Africa, West Africa, the Near East, India, Brazil, Peru, Mesoamerica and Central America, and Japan. We are contemplating trips to Colombia, Norway, Africa, China, and Central Asia. We do not care to stay in hotels and strongly prefer to rent furnished apartments and homes. Our friends tell us that we are neat, responsible, and undemanding guests. My wife is a gifted host and chef.
