Though our area is dotted with dozens of smaller battle fields (which also double as gentle-moderate hikes) those interested in Civil War history will want to take the short drive to Antietam National Battle field. Do one stop or continue through all the linked parks in and around Sharpsburg, Md.
Antietam National Battlefield is a well preserved battlefield of the Civil War.
Step into history at this amazing park. Check out the Shot Tower and Burnsides Bridge. We have been taking our family there for picnics for 25 years. We love it!

“Approaching their 100th anniversary, Crystal Grottoes Cavern opened to the public in 1922 and is Maryland's only "show" cavern. It's a relatively small cavern, but boasts more formations per square foot than any other cave known to man. The temperature inside the cave is a constant 54 degrees year-round - quite refreshing on a hot summer day. All-in-all a fun stop for the whole family and an especially good rainy-day activity. Stop by while you're in the area! (Bring cash.)”

“You can borrow bikes at the visitor center on S. Potomac St in Williamsport MD at no charge! (Don't go to Potomac MD. Ignore what the AirBnB map shows; it keeps overriding me)”
