L'Achilleion è un palazzo costruito a Corfù dall'Imperatrice Elisabetta d'Austria, anche nota come Sissi, dopo un suggerimento del console austriaco Alexander von Watzberg.[1][2] Elisabetta era una donna ossessionata dalla bellezza, e molto vigorosa, ma tragicamente vulnerabile dopo la perdita dell'unico figlio maschio, il Principe Ereditario Rodolfo d'Austria nei fatti di Mayerling nel 1889. Un anno dopo nel 1890, costruì una residenza estiva nella regione di Gastouri , attualmente municipalità di Achilleion, a circa dieci chilometri a sud della città di Corfù. Il palazzo fu progettato dall'architetto napoletano Raffaele Caritto ed ha la figura dell'eroe mitologico Achille come suo tema centrale. La posizione dell'Achilleion offre una vista panoramica della città di Corfù, a nord, e su l'intera parte meridionale dell'isola.

Corfu Achillion Palace: The Achillion Palace is ideally located in the picturesque village of Gastouri. This magnificent Palace was built in 1890 exclusively for Elizabeth (Sissy), the former Empress of Austria. The palace used to serve as the summer retreat of the Empress. Unfortunately, Sissy, the Empress, passed away in a rather tragic manner when she was brutally assassinated in 1898 in Geneva and the palace was deserted till the year 1907 when it was bought by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany.

The beautiful Achillion is located 10 km south of Corfu town and 3 north of Benitsa next to the mountain village of Gastouri, is the palace built by the Empress of Austria Elizabeth who became known as the sad Queen Sissy. The queen, whose life became a movie, singled out Corfu on a tour of the Mediterranean islands and decided to settle here trying to overcome the grief from the tragic losses suffered by her family and the illness that afflicted her.
