Roughly three miles direct line of sight from the US Capitol Building to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The National Gallery of Art, The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, The Washington Monument, and the National World War II Memorial are all along the path).

Obviously, when you visit DC you visit the monuments. It's just strange they call it the National Mall when there is no mall there.

The Smithsonian’s are all great a completely free! Get to Air and Space/Natural History early to avoid huge lines. Other museums that are a little off the beaten path (and charge a fee):
