If hiking an active volcano is on your bucket list, this is a great opportunity to do it! The level of difficulty is medium, so bring the right attitude, gear, water and snacks. If you are lucky, you might see red lava, but at the moment that is probably not going to happen. Anyways, the hot volcanic rock, nature and views are really worth it. Tips: There is a 200 Quetzal ($27 USD) expense to enter the national park and hire a mandatory guide. Plus, bring some extra money if you plan on renting a horse and tips. Bring quetzales since exchange rates for $USD are very poor.

You can't go to Guatemala and not hike a volcano! This is the place to do it! Pacaya, is an active volcano that is safe to hike. When going to Pacaya keep in mind that you will need to pay for parking, park fees and for a guide that will take you up. There will be people there that will offer to take you to the top on horse or donkey for a fee. If you're not adventurous and don't want to drive out to the volcano yourself, there are many tour guides in Antigua that will take you out.

Pacaya Volcano is the most popular volcano trek in Antigua, probably because it’s the most accessible. You only need a moderate level of fitness to scale Pacaya and can do it in a half day. The volcano is still active, so you can toast marshmallows on the still-hot rocks. The volcano is still active, so you can toast marshmallows on the still-hot rocks.

The easiest volcano to climb in Guatemala. It is still active so you must go with a local certified tourist guide. We can help book a private excursion for you (door to door shuttle, certified tourist guide and a doggy bag breakfast). Gorgeous views to the top, you can see lava from a close distance so do bring your marshmellows and a good pair of hiking shoes, and if you feel like it you can even ride a horse up, which is fun and much less physically demanding but so much fun. Have a hearty carb filled dinner the night prior and bring plenty of water with you. Don't forget to tip your guide, most of them come from a very humble background. Horses: Q100 Wooden stick to help you go up: Q10 (which you donate on the way back to the same person who sold it to you, look at it as a rental).
