The Whitchurch inn finds itself in the middle of the quiet community of Whitchurch on the outskirts of Tavistock. It was originally built in the 13th century and has been closely linked with the stunning St Andrews church ever since. It has been family owned since 1999 when the Langton family saw its potential. It was carefully and lovingly transformed by Paul, to reveal its natural character, with stunning oak beams, natural stone walls and two large fire places. During the renovations an old shoe was found in the walls, as was custom in the 1800's to ward off evil spirits. It is situated just around the corner from our house.

When you visit Buckland, you follow over 700 years of footsteps; from the Cistercians who built the Abbey and farmed the estate, to seafarers Grenville and Drake who changed the shape of the house and the fate of the country. The Abbey is part museum, part house, and filled with treasures such as the legendary Drake’s Drum. There’s no mistaking the magnificence of the Great Barn, which has remained virtually unchanged since it was built all those centuries ago. You’ll discover meadows, orchards and woodlands where you can enjoy far-reaching views of the Tavy Valley. Our way-marked trails are a riot of colour through the seasons, with an unmissable carpet of bluebells in spring.

The Garden House is the elegant former home of the vicars of Buckland Monachorum. built in the early 19th century, the house accommodates the tearooms and offices. The history of this 10-acre garden is closely entwined with that of Buckland Abbey and the local church. In 1305 the Bishop instructed the Abbot to build a house for the parish priest and this site was chosen. At the dissolution of the monasteries, the Abbot became the vicar of Buckland Monachorum and by the early 1700s, the vicarage consisted of a substantial 3-storey dwelling. The remains of this building, a tower with spiral staircase and a thatched barn, formerly the kitchen, are now the romantic ruins on the lower terrace.

The house is an architectural hotchpotch, mainly re-built in Tudor times. The chapel was first consecrated in 1411, and was re-modelled in the early 1500s. At a similar time the Great Hall was widened, and the south wall was moved forward, ‘squashing’ the chapel into a corner. This fortified manor house is set on a high bluff on the Cornish bank of the river Tamar, which gave natural protection from skirmishing armies approaching from the east. Inside the rambling stone walls you'll find a fascinating collection that reflects the antiquarian taste of the Georgian Edgcumbes. The family developed the interiors between about 1750 and 1860 in a deliberate attempt to evoke a sense of nostalgia a
