Food Scene

This offshoot of the influential Moro and Morito on Exmouth Market focuses on north African, eastern Mediterranean and southern Spanish cooking, in a decidedly frill-free yet comfortable dining room with tons of space. Head chef Marianna Leivaditaki’s menus are a delightfully rustic find on Hackney Road, featuring mountain sausage, turbot with fisherman’s broth, and fresh sheep’s cheese with pistachios and orange blossom. Equal parts neighbourhood go-to and guilty pleasure.

The Sunday roast is a pillar in British food culture, but surprisingly few restaurants better the home-cooked version of this national institution. The Marksman’s roast, one of the very best in the city, is worth going out for. But this is a restaurant to visit any day of the week. Delicious, seasonal, imaginative cooking — brilliantly British and refined, this should be the template for the gastropub 2.0 in London. The ox cheek bun is rightfully worshipped.

High-end but not fusty; low-key but impeccable service. One of Britain's most talented chefs, Isaac McHale has put in time at high-profile spots Noma and The Ledbury. Stunning, meandering tasting menus — chiefly British — with flashes of flavour from such cuisines as India and Japan in the dining room; cult snacks and great cocktails in the bar. One of London’s most adventurous Michelin-starred restaurants.

Two chefs — Andrew Clarke and Jackson Boxer — have joined Shoreditch’s wood grill community. This is a restaurant inspired by “very, very drunken lunch” two summers ago at Boxer’s mother’s home, Pound Farm, in West Sussex, which is the source of much of the salads and vegetables. St Leonard’s — named after the church on the same street — will “attempt to create a high-summer afternoon in Sussex in a more urban setting”: the meeting of highly technical preparations and primal cooking of lamb legs, roasted ducks, and whole fish, grilled and roasted over fire. There’s a raw bar too from which oysters are offered three ways, alongside razor clam with peas; a more playful bar menu offers clam pie

A Kingsland Road staple, flocks of East London locals revel in the laid back nature of Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes. While the interiors may be ever-changing thanks to a local plethora of artists, the attitude remains as this: Cracking pizzas, a top selection of cocktails, and a crowd that promises to be non-assuming, as long as you are too.
