Food Scene

The house bakers, Matilda and her husband, have a real gift for authentic Italian pastries. The best biscotti (sesame seed, nocciolo, etc,) I've had this side of the Atlantic.

For absolutely authentic, lovingly prepared and presented Oaxacan cuisine, can't be beat. The ambience is casual and homey, the people are utterly darling, the prices are good.

Seasonal, but if you've got the time and the stars align, this is a South Jersey seafood eating experience you won't forget. Don't expect fancy--it's wood tables and benches on the screened porch and paper plates and brown paper towels for napkins, but this little place with its Bull Durham painted barnside and vast views of salt meadows beyond is fabulous, especially for a summer evening sunset.

Parks & Nature

Bridgeton boasts one of the largest urban parks in the State, and NJ's oldest FREE public zoo. The park has all kinds of somewhat hidden delights (but that's a park for you)--walking and biking trails, a sandy beach on Sunset Lake (where boating is allowed), and in Spring a blaze of rhododendrons along the winding central Park Drive that cuts a swathe through the park for a mile. The Cohanzick Zoo is a great stop for families--super well-run, clean, educational, fun, with no grand wild animals beyond a couple of beautiful young tigers, but lots of information and just enough to see up close to keep you and your kids entertained for an hour or two. Events are held there periodically too.

This WPA designed State Park is a gem--everything you expect of a beautiful wildish park with amenities for kind-to-nature human beings: swimming, walking, biking, even camping, if you decide our FiveRedDoors amenities are a little too comfortable for you!

Arts & Culture

The glass exhibits here--where American glass was born--are world-class. This is a not-to-miss experience if you have time to enjoy the culture of South Jersey while you're in the neighborhood!

I almost hesitated to call this place a museum, because it's really a made-over string of oyster shipping sheds, spared and restored and richly interpreted just so folks wouldn't forget one of the critical industries of Southern New Jersey. You can still enjoy some of the best Delaware Bay oysters around at the Oyster Cracker cafe (limited opening times--you really want to check ahead) but the draw is the scene, looking out over Delaware Bay at the mouth of the Maurice River--poignant and beautiful in its reminder of how many working lives were sustained by this industry once upon a time. The "tall ship" AJ Meerwald also docks here and takes trips along the East Coast. Sign on!

Shopping

South Jersey (as American Pickers knows) is a mecca for clinging collectors--some of the best collectibles around are still around here. We confess this particular shop is an extension of our own "Stuff University" here at home, but it's a good place to make first acquaintance with the secretive stuff culture of this area, which may look a bit down-at-heels but is super proud of its history. Even our second-hand shops hide some gems. So don't tell anyone else about the unique things you can find down in Down Jersey, but do tell us if you're looking for that special something to set off that chaste mid-century-modern decor--we can probably point you right to it, and it will be absurdly cheap.
