Even in the thick of summer, the beach in Quogue can feel like your own private oasis. With public swim and sand just off the main road, you can plant your umbrella, set up a picnic, or catch some rays without having to go far. One look at those stunning blue waves, and you'll remember just how good it feels to get out of the City. Village Beach, 170-172 Dune Road, Quogue; 631-653-4498.

Fishing charters are a great way to enjoy some catch-and-release fun and, if you happen to catch sizable strippers or fluke, to grill and enjoy. There are a few captains to recommend, but Captain Merritt White has always been our first choice ((631) 243-8450 / merrittwhite67@gmail.com). He's US Coast Guard licensed, fully insured and a Graduate of St. Lawrence University with background in Biology and Environmental Science so he's great at educating kids (and adults) about the ocean and the wonderful (and delicious) creatures in it. 1/2 Day (4 hrs. 1-2 anglers) – $550 3/4 Day (6 hrs. 1-2 anglers) – $700 Full Day (8 hrs. 1-2 anglers) – $850 You can also look on https://www.skiffguide.com/ for other captains. Make sure you are able to launch from the super close Hampton Bays docks rather than Montauk which is much, much further away.

A local favorite with super fresh fish from the Hampton Bays docks and an attached restaurant with a lively bar. We use it to pick up prepared foods on the way to the beach (Ponquogue Beach to be exact as that's the closest one) for picnic-style lunches and on the way home from a day at the beach for a grill to remember. 78 Foster Avenue Hampton Bays, NY 11946 https://www.78fosterhamptons.com/tully-s-fish-market

Located in nearby Water Mill, Duck Walk Vineyard is a family owned winery with tours, wine tastings and a picnic area over looking the vines and The Parrish Art Museum (for our money, it's the best non-ocean view in the Hamptons.) Weekends they have live music which is a real treat. Admittedly, the quality of the wine is only fair but the picturesque setting make it more than tolerable! https://duckwalk.com/ 231 Montauk Hwy, Water Mill, NY 11976

Sonny's (as it is called) is a solid local purveyor of meat and BBQ supplies as well as Italian Specialties (cheese and sauces). If you are a meat eater, their homemade sausages are perfect for the 4 Hand House grill and their ribeye steak is hard to beat. Established in 1949 in the City and NJ, Goldberg's roots are steeped in the world of flour, water and yeast. With a wide selection of deli and bakery options and several locations in Eastern Long Island they have become THE bagels on the East End. Located in the heart of East Quogue - 481 Montauk Hwy - (631) 996-4445. Open 7am to 3pm daily There is a small seating area but it is also a good source for take out. The bagels are top notch even if they don't use City water.

Shinnecock Canal was originally dug in 1892 to alleviate tidal differences of 3 feet and more between Peconic Bay to the north and Shinnecock Bay. With parks and boat yards along its banks it's a nautical spot. For best viewing of the boats coming in and out, try the fishing pier on the West side of the canal , Meschutt Beach County Park, or relax and have a drink at Canal Cafe - 44 Newtown Rd, Hampton Bays, NY 11946-1432 +1 631-723-2155 https://www.thecanalcafe.com/ or our favorite Cowfish - 258 E. Montauk Hwy, Hampton Bays, NY 11946 | 631.594.3868 https://cowfishrestaurant.com/ Another effect of this as found in the records of the New York State Salt Water Bays Commission was the water level of Shinnecock Bay was raised by one foot. Shinnecock Inlet is the easternmost of five major inlets connecting bays to the Atlantic Ocean through the narrow 100-mile-long outer barrier that stretches from New York City to Southampton, New York on the south shore of Long Island. It splits Westhampton Island from the peninsula extending from Southampton Village. Interestingly, the inlet was formed by the Great Hurricane of 1938 which killed several people when it permanently broke through the island in Hampton Bays, New York. The name comes from the nearby Shinnecock Indian Nation.

Since 1934, the Quogue Wildlife Refuge has been a nature preserve that is home to diverse wildlife including some that are permanently injured and require human care to survive. 365 days a year, you can enjoy walking seven miles of trails to explore diverse habitats including forests and ponds, as well as the ecologically rare Dwarf Pines in the Pine Barrens. Owls, falcons, hawks and other native New York animals that have permanent injuries are housed in the Outdoor Wildlife Complex and can be visited any day of the year. https://quoguewildliferefuge.org/

This is our favorite spot for family dinning. Cowfish features 360 degree views of the Shinnecock Canal as well as ample decking and outdoor seating. There is also a "pirate ship" playground for the kids. And the food? It's phenomenal - truly. The sauteed brussel sprouts will change your life. 258 E. A fine dinning option, Stone Creek Inn has graced East Quogue since 1996, when chef Christian Mir, a native of one of the most celebrated culinary regions on earth, Southwest France, and his wife bought and renovated the historic building and created a premier dining destination. Try the locally sourced fluke ceviche or crispy soft shelled crabs. Expensive but very solid. https://www.stonecreekinn.com/

Super friendly tex-mex comfort food in the heart of East Quogue in somewhat of a charming dive-barish setting (but with ample outdoor seating as well). This place is a local institution and is great for large groups with or without kids. New Moon Cafe is family owned and operated since 1978.

This relative newcomer has established itself as an authentic Italian option complete with a bocce ball summer league and a farm to fork ethos. All menu items are made in house using many of the East End’s local, in season produce - fresh homemade pasta, individual pizzas from their onsite wood burning oven and dishes with Mediterranean touches, such as clams oreganata, grilled octopus and (my guilty pleasure) zucchini chips. 336 W. The Arts

The long light and landscape of Long Island have always drawn painters and photographers to the East End. Founded in 1898 "The Parrish" has been a vital cultural presence from its inception With its relocation in 2012 to a stunning light-filled, purpose-built facility in nearby Water Mill, The Parrish is now a must see for art lovers with local and historically relevant artists on display from William Merritt Chase (I think they have the world's largest collection of his work) to Jackson Pollock to Cindy Sherman.
