n Ireland’s beautiful far South West – where the ancient Kingdom of Kerry meets wild West Cork – five great peninsulas with mountainous spines stretch miles out into the ocean. This is great walking country, with long-distance trails and circular routes across the region. Hugging the coast, or crossing Ireland’s highest mountains, breathtaking views unfold at every turn. It’s the furthest west in all Ireland: “next parish Manhattan”, they say here. And there’s a distinctly edge-of-the-world feel to the Southern Peninsulas, as both the mainland and everyday life are left far behind.

pancake cottage is over 200 years old and has been run by Peter & Margaret Kerssens since 1997. The old dormer cottage was originally a family farmhouse, located on a sidetrack on the famous Ring of Kerry overlooking Slievaduff Valley. The area is a favourite with tourists and locals alike. Peter & Margaret turned the cottage into a little café/restaurant creating the space themselves as they have a great love for cooking and creating things. Keeping the traditional Irish cottage-style which makes it a cosy and homely restaurant, with a welcoming wood burning stove but with modern facilities. The cottage has its own well, so there is no chloride in the water system, just pure natural filtered spring water. The little art & craft shop is another aspect of “The Strawberry Field”. The crafts are all by local artists, including items created by Peter and Margaret’s paintings and crafts.

All three courses are built to modern specifications with sand-based greens and tree-lined, undulating fairways. Killeen is considered the flagship course of the club. It reopened in June 2006 and is slightly longer with faster greens, which have been brought closer to the water hazards around the course. Long accurate shots will be rewarded on this course.
