Food scene

Places we love to eat.
The Golden Pig has really nice wine, beer and cocktails in addition to great food. It is owned by the same woman as nearby Sip wine store which specializes in retailing wines from nearby wineries and the Anderson Valley. She also owns a farm so much of the meat and vegetables come from her farm.

Boonville is a charming town that's a half an hour drive through our surrounding scenic mountains. If you’re thirsty for some local brew, pull in to Anderson Valley Brewing Company where you can drink a pint, play disc golf, or take a tour. You pass this charming town on the way to our home, and it's the perfect place to take a break and see some sights. First stop is to explore The Solar Living Institute’s 12 acres of grounds that contain kids’ play areas, ponds, educational information, native plantings and Real Goods, which is the largest straw bale store in the U.S. Mendocino County produces great olive oil and sparkling wine and you can get a taste of both at Olivino/Terra Sávia while you browse the displays of eclectic art and furniture. Check out the bocce ball courts at Brutocao Cellars, located in what used to be Hopland’s high school. The Bluebird Café is known for its wide selection of unusual burgers and great pies, but the star of the show is the huge moose head that overlooks diners! Sip and Savor at Sip and its sister restaurant, The Golden Pig, while across the road relax by the fountain and enjoy a wood-fired pizza at Piazza de Campovida. Back on the road again, head north and fantasize about estate living on the 180-acre Jeriko Estate winery or visit the first wine caves in the county at Saracina Ranch. If it’s a view you’re craving, there’s no better place to stop than the terrace at RIVINO with its breathtaking vista of the Ukiah valley.

Hiking spots

Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve is an excellent example of both a magnificent coastal redwood grove and a beautiful fern forest. It can be reached by traveling 13 miles west from Ukiah past Orr’s Mineral Hot Springs resort. Montgomery Woods is one of the more remote of California’s 31 redwood parks. It is a perfect place for a picnic. A trail follows Montgomery Creek upstream to five separate redwood groves that have never been logged. The trail is about three miles long, laid out in a shallow loop that takes about an hour to travel. The reserve started with a nine-acre donation by Robert Orr in 1945, and has been enlarged to 2,743 acres by purchases and donations from the Save the Redwoods League.
