Food scene

There is a great food scene in the local area, below are a few of my favourites, covering breakfast dinner and tea. There is a good cross section to cover all pockets
Dunfanaghy :- Open from dawn til dusk you could sit and eat in here all day. The breakfast is ludicrously good value with coffee or tea included. Their famous ‘belly buster’ burger will leave you wobbly afterwards. Another place with a mighty friendly team who’s mission is to fill you up with good food without breaking the bank. Open for bookings and take aways

Dunfanaghy: - Fantastic spot for a sour dough pizza. Always busy but you can grab a drink from Patsy Dan’s while you wait. If the sun is shining sit outside and be amazed by the crispy sour dough bases and well thought through topping combos. If you’re feeling a little fruity you can order a dessert pizza with seasonal fruits and Nutella. Opens at five, open for bookings and takeaway

Dunfanaghy :- The only thing better than the sandwiches and baked potatoes is the banter you’ll get from the staff. The sandwiches are packed to bursting and you’ll drown in the amount of tea they put in a pot. And we’ve not even got onto the cake selection!

Dunfanaghy;- Cafe Arnou begins the day with coffees and by night moonlights as a gourmet burger bar. The menu has great variety. I highly recommend the sweet potato fries and with options like pulled pork burgers and falafel pitas you’ve plenty to get excited about!

Pizza to die for, the topping are just wonderful, my favorites being Pear William, with brie pear and pesto with rocket and walnuts. Or try the Tarte Flambee, with sour cream and parmesan smoked bacon chestnut mushrooms shallots and truffle oil, but any of the pizza off this menu are definitely going to delight. And at 12 euro a pizza it’s not going to break the bank. YUM YUM YUMMY 😋

My favourite walks

One of Irelands few coastal forest parks with beaches, lots of trails and walk, a coffee shop and play ground for kids, If you are going to drive in, have Five Euro coins at hand. If. you park outside the gate, its a good 40 Minute walk to the coast where the nice stuff begins. From my house you can go down to the friary at the end of my road and walk around into the forest, its a lovely coastal walk- ask me for more information

Sightseeing

Or known locally as the Poison Glen, About a half and hour drive from my place. The scenery is spectacular, I would recommend you drive down over the mountains and back by the coast stopping off along the way. I would be happy to give you more information. The Poison Glen Lies at the foot of Mount Errigal the tallest peak of the Derryveagh mountain range, in Dunlewey in the Donegal Gaeltacht The Derryveagh mountain range in Donegal, or as referred to by the locals as the ‘Seven Sisters’, includes the mountains of; Aghla Beg, Aghla More, Ardloughnabrackbaddy, Crocknalaragagh, Errigal, Mackoght (known also as little Errigal) and Muckish. The Poisoned Glen is a renowned venue in Ireland for climbing and mountaineering and has Ireland’s largest continual rock face The Bearnas Buttress. So why is this beautiful area named The Poisoned Glen. One story is that it was wrongly translated from Irish to English years ago and the correct name should be ‘Heavenly Glen’ (the Irish word for Heaven is neamh and the Irish word for poison is neimhe). Another story is that the king of Tory, Balor, had a very beautiful daughter who he kept closed away in a Tower out of men’s view. However word of her beauty spread and she was kidnapped and brought to Magheroarty. Balor followed and got her, he killed her kidnapper with a giant stone. At the entrance to The Poisoned Glen one such stone stands and it is said to be the poisoned eye of Balor. A more likely story is that the glen was filled with foxglove flowers that contained digitalis and poisoned the livestock. but is is up to you :-) An old ruined Church which was built around 1830 from local white marble can be seen at the bottom of Mount Errigal at the entrance to The Poison Glen. From this church, by following the right bank of the Owenabhainn River, you can go right into The Poisoned Glen. The picture of this ruined Church with Mount Errigal in the background is widely known. Music flourishes here and it is an essential part of everything that makes this place so special. Clannad & Enya grew up nearby. The family pub can be visited, Teach Leo Behind Mount Errigal lies Lake Altan at the foot of the Aghla Mór Mountain, the lake inspired the naming of the music group Altan. The Poison Glen is home place to the Lunny’s mother, and the brother’s regularly spend time with their mother’s people. The Glen has been very influential and inspirational to them. Manus Lunny and his family live here and he commutes to Scotland to play with his band Cappercaile. Daniel O’Donnell and his sister Margo live not far away in Kincasslagh. With such talent it is not surprising Dunlewey is home to Dunlewey Theatre, a beautiful building situated at the edge of Dunlewey Lough. The theatre provides a space for local, national and international performers in all areas of the arts, from film, music, drama, comedy and cabaret. At the lake you can also find a tourist centre Ionad Cois Locha (Lakeside Centre).

I have a great affinity for boats and the sea and this little harbour is a great favourite of mine. The harbour of Bunbeg, on a tiny inlet, is one of the most sheltered in Ireland and although it can get crowded with small fishing boats , it is a delightful spot and well worth a visit. Bunny village with pubs, restaurants and shops is 1Km from the harbour and Donegal airport at Carrickfinn is nearby
