Fedhill or One the Hill is what we like to call it. You can spend your entire day walking, shopping, sight seeing and eating great Italian food. Most nights in the Summer, there are live bands that perform for free in the heart of the hill.

Clams nestle in a beachside pit with corn, potatoes, lobsters, sausage and other goodies until the smoky, fire-roasted gems are ready to be served and washed down with a cold beer. If you want someone else to do the work, Newport's Castle Hill Inn has a summer clambake for $95 a pop (not including drinks). You get clam chowder, lobster, chorizo, littlenecks, jalapeno-cheddar cornbread, apple pie with ice cream, peach sweet tea and croquet, with a view of the Newport harbor. Not too shabby.

Watch Hill is a delightful old-fashioned resort town with an excellent beach, a lighthouse, and a historic carousel.

At the foot of these is a beautiful beach, although the prospect of climbing back up the 151 steps might discourage you. At the northern tip of the island is the 1867 North Lighthouse, where there is an interpretive center. Miles of trails crisscross the island and are popular with birders who come to spot the more than 150 species stopping here in the fall. A weekend on this island with its far-away feeling is one of the most romantic things to do in Rhode Island
