Local Eats and Drinks

Pittsburgh has many delicious restaurant, bar and coffee shop options and experiences. These are the places that are closest to the house (less than 1 mile.)
Cozy and upscale. A great chef pushing the boundaries offering some familiar and unique options.

Open concept adjacent to a quirky bookstore. The space is bright and welcoming. The menu has Belguim connections and also plenty of familiar (with a twist) selections. I love this place for lunch and brunch. It's got a really laid back, friendly vibe. I don't take advantage of the bar often but their craft cocktails are outstanding whenever I do. Well executed and unique.

This place is cousin to the located in the posh Mt. Lebanon area where I grew up. I like that they are always friendly and sell slices. I like the square cut slices the best. Ample cheese and light dough (you can tell they use good water.) The sauce is tomato-y. Not tart, nor sweet. A nice balance. I also love the San Pellegrino Prickly Pear italian soda.

I recommend this place because it was one of the first coffee shops in the area and because of the great courtyard across the street where you can enjoy your beverage in the fresh air. The vibe here can be a bit stand offish to outsiders. I don't think it's intentional but I wouldn't come here to get a taste of the Pittsburgh friendliness.

This is an old bar. It's seen a lot of transitions. East Ohio is a bit rough around the edges as things transition. I don't hesitate to come here. They are so friendly and the company is always diverse. The drink prices are reasonable and the vibe is lively. They have live music pretty often. Wednesday night is blue grass- it's probably one of the best and most popular nights. This is a basic bar...not a good stop for those wanting craft cocktails or great wine.

This is Pittsburgh tradition on game day. Their approach is simple- serve great subs/hoagies fast. No non-sense. No frills. Delicious ingredients every time.

This is the sister location to the Smallman Galley in the Strip District. I will always love Smallman Galley the most but....this place is a decent 2nd. The concept at the Galley's is to feature 4 different chefs in the same space. Each chef has their own concept, their own kitchen. The place is open and bright. You order whatever you want from whichever place you want and then you find a table- it's open seating. They have a GREAT patio out back and the many garage doors that they open to bring the fresh air into the place. The concept is great. And it's nice to have different options if you have a crowd with different tastes or moods. The bar and the bar tenders here are out of this world. Their creative menu of thougthful craft cocktails, excellent craft beer selections and basics is worth the trip alone. Kat is my favorite mixer- let her know that I sent you.

I gotta give a nod to Subba. It's not fancy (at all) but it reasonably priced and the food is really good. Indian dishes, chinese food and probably some other ethnic foods are available here. I recommend this place for take out. Personally I don't mind it for eat in on the rare occasion- but I am not about to recommend anyone else eat in. I'm aware of the ambiance- it's basic, almost stark. Let me just say this...I don't like chinese food usually. It's over processed and the taste of the food is masked by the sauces. This is the only place that I will eat chinese food.

Ridiculously good. Really. Outstanding Thai. There is another location just across the 7th Street Bridge in downtown Pittsburgh. They just expanded their location when their neighbor moved out and the place it still packed. It's good.
