Alex Johnstone and David Rothstein, two 20-something buddies who’ve been riding bikes together since high school, have transformed their business towing 100-pound coffee carts behind their bikes into a brick-and-mortar outpost in one of Seattle’s oldest neighborhoods, Pioneer Square. Convoy has a prime spot in Impact Hub, a shared workspace that houses socially conscious small businesses. Hyper-local is the name of the game at Convoy Coffee. From the beans to the milk to the espresso machine (produced in nearby Georgetown) to the countertops (Boeing hardwood) to the curated pastries (from Coyle’s), everything’s sourced from as close to Seattle as possible.

Parks & Nature

Green Lake is one of Seattle's most beloved parks. Its expanse of water and green space in the center of a dense urban neighborhood draws thousands of people daily from all over the city. The park serves as a natural preserve for hundreds of species of trees and plants, as well as numerous birds and waterfowl. The newly reconstructed 2.8-mile path around the lake provides a perfect recreational spot for runners, bikers, skaters and walkers. Many others use the athletic fields or visit the park for boating, picnics and swimming.

Sustainable Magnolia, a neighborhood organization, received a Small and Simple Neighborhood Matching Fund award from the Department of Neighborhoods to create an updated site design for Magnolia Manor Park. To accomplish this, project leaders hosted a community-driven process, including three public input meetings, with the goal of creating a mixed-use place of beauty, vibrancy, and sustainability for all members of the community. The Magnolia Manor P-Patch Garden grew out of this process. The Friends of Magnolia Manor Park spearheaded development of the park.

Sightseeing

The Space Needle is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world and is a treasured Seattle icon. Built for the 1962 World’s Fair—the Century 21 Exposition whose theme was “The Age of Space”—the tower’s futuristic design was inspired by the idea that the fair needed a structure to symbolize humanity’s Space Age aspirations. Since its grand opening on April 21, 1962, the landmark continues to symbolize the innovative and forward-thinking spirit of Seattle. Located at Seattle Center, the Space Needle stands at 605’ tall and is one of the most photographed structures in the world.

Before the Space Needle came to town, the Smith Tower was the tallest building in the city, and even the tallest building west of the Mississippi for many years. Its observatory offers picture-perfect vistas, along with Prohibition-era craft cocktails and a legendary Wishing Chair.

A little bit maritime-centric enclave, a little bit hip foodie hotspot. As the Nordic Heritage Museum confirms, this neighborhood remains proud of its Scandinavian roots and hard-working maritime past. The vibe has greatly changed in recent decades, though, with Ballard now known as one of the hottest going-out hubs in town.

Wallingford has a nice mix of down-home, been-here-forever places (Dick’s Burgers and the Durn Good Grocery, for example) and trendy, hot-for-fall places, like Molly Moon ice cream and Tilth. The busiest area is along 45th Street, which is always bustling with activity as people visit the ever-changing lineup of restaurants, bars, and shops. Farther from the action lies the residential area with some pretty cool old homes.

Drinks & Nightlife

At street level, Ravenna’s Third Place looks like any other cozy independent bookstore. But down in the basement you’ll find a great bar with 18 rotating taps. Playing host to live music, book club gatherings, and Magic Mondays (where, every so often, the PNW’s finest magicians get together to perform in the spirit of the London theater cabarets), the Pub at Third Place serves up choice dishes including mezze plates, eggplant sandwiches with grilled halloumi, and kopanisti dips made from roasted red peppers and feta. And it’s all good. All of it. There’s also a sister cafe upstairs that serves housemade Greek food.

Tucked away in the Denny Triangle / South Lake Union neighborhood and referred to as a “futuristic bunker” by locals, Kremwerk is a unique space that functions as many things — killer dance club, venue for stand-up comedy and burlesque shows, (Seattle style) political fundraising spot… An industrial, ultramodern space, Kremwerk’s shows range from “Feel the Bern,” a three-night fundraiser / dance party for Bernie Sanders featuring hip hop and techno by some of Seattle’s sickest djs and artists (like Riz Rollins from KEXP), to a Fleetwood Mac tribute night where you’re encouraged to dress in white.
