Food Scene

Based on the 37th floor of a Novotel, Bokan certainly isn’t your average chain hotel restaurant. It towers over Canary Wharf and boasts suitably spectacular views of London’s skyline over the Docklands. When it comes to the cooking, French chef Aurelie Altemaire focuses on British ingredients to create a pan-European menu that includes duck breast with foie gras ravioli; scallops with black pudding, apple and celeriac; and rib-eye steak with grilled polenta and padron peppers. For those in it more for the views than the food, head upstairs to the bar space, where cheese and charcuterie keeps stomachs lined.

Something like a flagship for the brewers, the Gun is best known for its gorgeous views, which look out over the Thames, directly opposite the O2. In summertime, the terrace is the kind that fills up early with punters more than happy enough to stay the whole day, getting slowly sozzled in the sun. Come winter, come to eat. Fuller’s have made real efforts to up their food and it shows: the Sunday roast is not far off being one of London’s best, and the à la carte offering is surprisingly artful. Dishes are, for the most part, the warming comforting kind: pan fried duck livers cosying up to garlic roast tomatoes and soaked in a truffle ju is a richly flavoured, memorable starter.

The emphasis is firmly on conviviality, hospitality, setting and buzz as well as what’s cooking in the kitchen. Or not cooking as may be the case - the impeccable sushi and sashimi platters are among the highlights here, presented with dry ice and plenty of flair. What is cooked is done so in style - on an open robata grill. Try seared beef with black truffle dressing or scallop skewers with wasabi and shiso, imbued with a subtle, sexy touch of smoke. The restaurant’s famous black cod is another highlight - but a seriously steep one, at more than £30 for a small plate.

Drinks & Nightlife

At this famous Scottish restaurant, bar and music venue, no cliché is knowingly ducked – mounted stag’s head and angling trophy, tartan carpet, table-top thistles – yet they’re delivered with a cheerful wink. After 9pm there’s a stiff cover charge to watch jazz or blues from a stage at the far end of a pewter bar counter, where there’s a daunting number of fine whiskies.

They’ve nicknamed the bar on the first floor of Burger & Lobster 'The Quay to Happiness'. Up here, it’s all about a large beer selection and some appropriately snappy cocktails.

Street Feast’s shiny rooftop venue is home to heaps of stalls selling delicious grub. But it’s also where you’ll find a beer bar with a bona fide view, as well as ‘The Island Bar’, where peach bellinis and Negroni Sbagliatos are the order of the day. Or pick a posh iced tea if you’re just drinking in the views and not the booze.
