Payson sits in the middle of the largest Ponderosa Pine Forest in the world. This cool mountain town is only 1 hour away from the Valley of the Sun, yet it seems like a world away. Rich in western history, antique shops, museums, and art galleries, it is a year-round playground for outdoor enthusiasts. With its 4 mild seasons, it has become the Festival Capitol of Arizona, and just 2.3 miles north of town, and 1.6 miles down a winding country road that follows the East Verde River is PARADISE.
The pond wall stands tall and majestic, Vinca Major, Irises, Poppies and other long-established flowers covering its banks. The mature Weeping Willow Trees that circle the pond are waving in the breeze, inviting guests to enter a property that is reminiscent of the Deep South. It is nothing like what would be expected to find in a desert. Since the property is gated, those less fortunate only wonder what is at the top, although with reservations to be a special guest, you can enjoy walks around the pond, the piers, trails, and patios scattered around the property and accommodations into a home away from home.
The setting is serene. Watch the fish, ducks and perhaps a family of river otters come play in the clear fresh water. Sit on the end of the pier and watch the Cliff Swallow's dive into the pond, or the Great Blue Heron or American Bald Eagle fish out of the pond. The sight is amazing!
In the late afternoon, one will be lulled to sleep by the waterwheel playing its lazy song, as it drops the spring water from the mountain into the pond. The warmth of the sun, slipping through the trees, and the slight mountain breeze will be massaging the last bits of stress out of your body left over from the city life and will provide a relaxing atmosphere that is regenerating, renewing, refreshing and not only well deserved in our nanosecond world, but an experience you will want to enjoy over and over again.
The PondHouse Cottage provides lodging for those looking to mingle in nature and enjoy the many outdoor activities available. Fishing, hiking, bird watching, boating and exploring. . . . not to mention there is always just sitting, watching. . . . and relaxing.
The property has many patios, trails and views. We back up to the Tonto National Forest, and the East Verde River is in front of us. The pond is stocked, and because it is private property, there is no fishing license required. The pond has a surface area of almost 2 acres so it is perfect for canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards, or use the fishing boat and paddle boat on the property.
The cottage is small, but has a large outdoor living space. It is perfect for two adults, but not suitable for children or pets as the pond is open and there are other animals on the property. This is an “adult only “ property. Children will not be allowed. Pets are not allowed.
We have stocked the cottage with Deluxe Continental Breakfast items and an assortment of coffee, teas and hot chocolate for your convenience and enjoyment. Bottled water is also provided. There are also "PondHouse Cottage" robes supplied for your use, while staying with us.
The kitchenette has a microwave oven, toaster oven with coffee pot, refrigerator and an induction burner. All pots and pans, dishes, silverware and cooking utensils are provided. There is also an outdoor gas barbecue with a side burner in the Dragonfly Patio area.
We encourage you to bring your favorite beverages, snacks and foods with you during your stay with us....because you are not going to want to leave!
There is a parking area below the cottage, with a stairway to the top of the pond wall or you may park at the top next to your gate.
Because of being in the forest, and by water, you will see lots of wildlife. Elk, deer, raccoons, coyotes. Some even say bears, wolves and bobcats, but we have never seen them. River otters, hawks, eagles, Blue Heron's....and a variety of ducks, including our own that have private quarters on Duck Island...and are trained to come in at night.
You will find the property more of a resort than just lodging, but please always keep in mind that you are in the woods and be watchful of your surroundings. We do not encourage feeding the wild animals or trying to handle them, even though they might seem tame at times, especially the elk that wander in and about the neighborhood.
There is an outdoor infrared sauna on the Birdhouse Patio, along with an outdoor shower and hot tub, and in your private patio and garden area you also have your own private hot tub and gas fire pit. Guests have access to all patios and piers on the property.
DO YOU KNOW YOUR CONSTELLATIONS?
The Earth is in the Milky Way Galaxy, located in the Solar System. From here you can see the Milky Way as a cloudy band stretching across the sky. It was named this because it looks like spilled milk, spreading out across the sky. With our telescope, you can see the clouds are actually the collective lights from thousands and thousands of stars. Since we are embedded INSIDE the Milky way, we are seeing our home galaxy "Edge-on", from the inside. The Earth is located in the "Solar System", and the Solar System is located about 25,000 light years away from the outer edge of the Milky Way. We are located in the "Orion Spur". Where is the Orion Spur? We have Star Charts that will help you find out for yourself. Sound like fun yet? You can point out the Constellations using our "Green Laser" or get a better view through our telescope. The stars are pretty bright out here! You "City Folks" won't believe your eyes!
The neighbors aren't close, but they are still neighbors. We expect our guests to be respectful to the other properties in the neighborhood as if they were you're own. You wouldn't want anyone walking through your yard, so don't go into theirs.
We are close to other Payson attractions as well. The
small towns of Pine and Strawberry are just up the highway, as is the Tonto Natural Bridge. All are within 10 miles. There are maps in the cottage of hiking trail heads, and menus of some of our local restaurants.
