  • Tracey was the perfect host. She met us at the house after we got off the ferry and made us feel at home. The house itself is very lovely and spacious. It is situated right on the water and is walking distance to everything St. Margaret's Hope has to offer. I hope to return again someday and highly recommend this home.

  • Our stay at Traceys house was wonderful! The house has everything you need; it's cozy and very clean. It's next to the sea and we loved the view. Thanks Tracey, for having us!

  • Good communication. Location is easy to find getting off ferry. Beautiful, quiet place. Hotel close buy sells good hot food until 9.

  • We stayed for 8 nights in May and had a great time, lovely cottage 1 mins from the pentland ferry. Cottage was very clean, just as advertised and had all necessary appliances, it is in a beautiful spot in St Margarets Hope which is a pretty, quite village which is well situated to explore Orkney. Tracey was very helpful and meet us on arrival, I would highly recommend this house.

  • Comfortable, convenient place close to the Pentland Ferry port. Great location for exploring the island - easy drive to Kirkwalll and archeological sites. Tracey was very accommodating and communication was great.

    Katie2016-10-26T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely little nook right on the water! The Noust sits at the end of a small street, adjoining a boat launch, close to several inns and cafes. Our hosts provided a very clean and well appointed space which was very comfortable. It is, as many things are in the more idyllic parts of Orkney, a bit of a tight fit for those (like me) who stand over 6 feet, but certainly well worth ducking once or twice to have the ocean lapping at the low wall beneath the bedroom window.

    Adam2016-10-02T00:00:00Z
  • Tracey's place is lovely, right by the sea in St Margarets Hope. It had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and Tracey was really flexible with check-in time. Thanks for having us Tracey!

2 The Noust St Margarets Hope
    87 recensioni
A cosy ground floor apartment suitable for a single person or couple in the tranquil village of St Margaret's Hope, with one step at the entrance and situated on Front Road a few yards from the shore. 3 nights minimum
It is a cosy apartment (46 square metres), but nicely proportioned and laid out. There is a double bedroom with built in wardrobe and bedside tables with drawer space; bathroom with step into electric shower; galley kitchen; living room with a Futon sofa; armchair; fold up dining room table and three chairs; chest of drawers; corner tv unit and television with freeview and built in DVD player; small coffee table; electric heater to supplement heating if necessary. There is electric heating in lounge and bedroom and a heated towel rail in bathroom. Due to it being an old stone building with very thick walls it stays cosy and warm in the cold weather, but being near the sea can get condensation on the windows. There is a small dehumidifier which can be run during the day when you are out if needed. There is generally no mobile phone reception in the flat, due to it being an old stone building with thick walls, there is however good reception from the car park in front. There is also an Internet Cafe, The Selkie Tea Room, around the corner open 7 days a week as there is no Wifi or Internet connection in the flat.
St. Margaret's Hope is a very peaceful fishing village with many amenities, including a couple of pubs, an Internet Cafe open 7 days a week, two local shops one with a Post Office, and a craft shop. Recently opened up the hill is Robertson's a Cafe Bar and Restaurant, it also has wi-fi and is open 7 days a week. The Selkie Tea Room, which is the Internet Cafe, is good and serves basic food and snacks throughout the day, but not open during winter. Kirkwall also has a good range of large supermarkets and local shops, Cathedral, marina and ferry terminals with boats traveling to the northern islands.
  • Lovely peaceful village. Flat has everything you need

    Emma2017-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • Christine is a extremely kind and helpful guest, her flat small but tidy and comfortable.

    Michele2016-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • We were met off the ferry at Stromness by Christine with a wonderful bounty of local food and free range eggs from her very own hens. The hospitality extended to us was amazing and really made us feel welcome. Communication was good with clear directions provided for travel along with instructions on the flat and it's heating and utilities. This is a great little base camp for adventures on Orkney. The house is ideal for a couple or even a small family. There is one very comfy double bed and also a futon in the lounge. The kitchen is spacious and ideal if you are looking to keep the costs of eating out down. The flat is very clean and warm with a great hot shower. There is a small TV which we never felt the need to use, because after fresh air and fine food we were ready for bed. One of the greatest advantages I found of this property over other accommodation was its sense of being nestled amongst the community you almost become one of the locals for the short time you are there, with everyone being so friendly and welcoming. Locally there is a pub in easy walking distance, which serves good honest food and some splendid local ales. The village is quite self contained with good shops and a cafe so if you arrived on the St Margeret's Hope Ferry (which is walking distance) this would be an ideal location for those on foot or cyclists looking to explore the islands. South Ronaldsay is really a hidden gem and can alone host enough to do for those looking for panoramic views, coastal walks and historic adventures. We had the privilege of seeing a pod of four orcas at Hoxa Head, which is a lovely walk taking in the old naval defences to the entrance to Scapa Flow.

  • Christine has been very kind and helpful. She even offered to come and pick us up at the airport. She's provided us with all the necessary for breakfast ( even her hens eggs! ) The flat is small but nice and cosy and very well equipped, it's a little damp though, but provided with an efficient dehumidifier. It's 20 minutes ' drive from Kirkwall and 15 minutes ' walk from the ferry terminal.

    Marcella2016-08-01T00:00:00Z
  • Cozy comfortable flat with great location. The flat is very good equipped and Mel left us some food for breakfast. The flat is very close to the ferry and therefore the Location was very convient. We recommend this accommodation to everyone! Thank you for the pleasant stay.

    Neele2017-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect for a couple. The location is ideal - quiet but with good access to the rest of Orkney. The flat is fully equipped and very comfortable.

    David2017-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely little flat in a beautiful location; the village is quiet and tranquil but there are good places to eat and shops. An excellent base to explore Orkney.

    Olivia2017-08-03T00:00:00Z
  • The flat is in the front row of houses just besides the sea front. Only our car had a better view, as the parking space directly faces the sea. We loved our stay in the Orkneys with a nice clean home to come back to.

Soluzione consigliata.

  • This flat is a great location for touring around the Orkney Islands. It has all of the amenities you would want or need. The town is beautiful and quaint and the flat is a 3 minute drive from the ferry port. Great experience!

    Kaitlin2017-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • Nice view to the bay, a good place to disconnect in a beautiful island. The house was comfortable and calm. Very close to the ferry and situated in a calm neighborhood.

    Joaquín2017-06-20T00:00:00Z
  • Nice place. Well equipped. No internet sevice. Cell service was better outside. Beautiful small quite town. 2 pubs and a coffee shop nearby. We also found the local park/ playground that the kids enjoyed.

  • Top location and very cosy flat with a view on a beautiful hidden bay of orkneys. (seals included) Megan and her mom are very kind and the answer was very quick. We recommend the pub of the bellevue inn for a good pint of orkney beer, a pool match and the latest news about Andy Murray.

  • Couldn't recommend this place enough. Lovely spacious, cosy and well situated. The host Meagan and her Mum Margret were most welcoming and very attentive. We loved our stay here

It's a flat by name, but many people have called it a cottage because there are only two 'flats' in the building, one up (this one) and one below, and both are front door entry. It's a small modernly appointed flat (46 square metres), but nicely proportioned and laid out. There's a small double bedroom, a small shower room, a galley kitchen and a living room area with a sofa, a dining room table, and a desk in the window with views out to the sea. * towels and bedding are provided * free wifi is available * local tourist information, maps and guidebooks available in the flat + a good selection of books by local writers *washing machine available + iron and ironing board * 24" flat screen tv with DVD (and free view) *alarm clock radio * hairdryer also provided
St Margaret's Hope is a very peaceful fishing village. There are a number of wonderful walks that can be made starting from the front door of the flat (including a wonderful walk around the coast which goes past the beautiful Sands of Wright). The village is a short 20 minute drive to Kirkwall (passing through the stunning scenery along the Churchill barriers), but St Margaret's Hope has many amenities, including a couple of restaurants/pubs, a few local shops (one with a post office), and a fantastic cafe. Other nearby attractions: Skerries Bistro, a short drive away is a great place to go for sea food and other local produce. There are amazing views across the Pentland Firth from the glass fronted dining area. The Sands Hotel, in Burray is another wonderful restaurant for local meat and fish, homemade cakes and ice cream. Their Sunday lunches are particularly good value and are very popular. In Orkney, it's wise to book restaurants in advance. Restaurants can book up very quickly (particularly in the summer months), but it's also a good idea to phone just to check that the restaurant is open. The Hoxa tea room, a short drive from the Hope, is a great place for a cup of tea or lunch. There's also a really nice circular walk from the tea room around Hoxa Head (which takes about 40 mins). You can find a leaflet for this walk in the flat. There are also a number of great walks that can be started from the front door of the flat. My favourite walk is a circular one to the Sands of Wright. It takes just over an hour (you can find detailed instructions and a map on the Walk Highlands website). There are also a lot of great beaches to go for walks around Scapa Flow. For rainy days, The Pickaquoy Centre in Kirkwall has great facilities, including a cinema, all-weather sports pitches, a climbing wall, and a swimming pool with a nice play area for children. There is a regular bus service from St Margaret's Hope to Kirkwall (and then onto Finstown and Stromness). The Pentland ferry terminal is also within walking distance. This leaves from Gill's Bay on the Mainland. You can see the ferry coming into the bay from the living room window! In the summer months, there is also a foot passenger ferry that operates from John O'Groats (the crossing takes less than an hour)
  • Sarah is a very nice host. We felt very comfortable all the time we were in the flat. She give us very clear explanations on how to get to the flat and use it. Tait's flat is very nice, it is quiet and very well equipped. And it is situated in a beautiful small town close to the sea. 100% recommendable

    Taho2015-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • What a delightful little flat this is. The bed is sooooo comfortable it was a shame to get up. Sarah has equipped the flat really well and it was therefore very east to cook with real size pans and the things you need to hand. Thank you Sarah

  • After a not so good accommodation in Orkney, Tait's Flat was absolutely perfect for my team of researchers to stay. The flat has everything you need, great location, and it's very tidy and clean. It was a great base from which to conduct research and go back to. Sarah was very nice accommodating them last minute and made sure everything was ready for their arrival. Many thanks!

    Monica2015-07-02T00:00:00Z
  • A really beautiful flat, next to the harbour and really easy to get to from the ferry. The flat itself was well equipped with everything that we could need for our week's stay. We would definitely recommend this place for anyone who's planning a trip to Orkney.

    Andrew2016-10-23T00:00:00Z
My journey in the Orkney islands was perfect. This flat is certainly the best one in the southern islands. It is full of light, clean, tidy, perfectly located. And the view from the windows is charming. All the things we need in an apartment (linens, stuff for the kitchen, touristic books, even binoculars) are there. And Sarah has some great ideas to share about walks in the islands. The Hope is a charming village. I recommend Robertson as a lovely place to drink and have some other informations about the islands.

    Pierre-Michel2016-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • Tait's Flats was beautifully set up for visitors and very comfortable for our week's stay. The location in Orkney was pleasant, giving us access to the southeast and the area east of Kirkwall.

  • Sarah is very friendly, she post me the key of tait's flat with concerned when I was staying at the Isle of Skye. And tell me everything I need to know about the beautiful village and the flat. The flat is clean, tidy, warm and quiet, I was staying at the flat two weeks, and I had a very comfortable staying !! The village is lovely, beautiful, quiet, just 2 minutes drive and 5 minutes walk to the St Margarets Hope Ferry Terminal, it's very good flat choose to stay !!

  • We loved our stay at Tait's Flats. Sarah was a pleasure to communicate with and the entire process went very smoothly. The flat was perfect for our needs. we loved the views of the moored boats in the harbour, the short stroll to the convenience store and discovering the community gardens. Sarah has a wealth of information available on things to see and do in Orkney and responded promptly to our questions. We would definitely stay here again. Thanks Sarah.

These small 2.69m x 1.98m wooden cabins look out to sea through fully glazed double doors, outdoor deck, on an organic farm-veg available, bedding & towels, lights, heater and an extra socket for charging things, shared kitchen, showers and loos. If this pod / cabin is booked there are 3 others please see my other listings - Oyster Catcher / Heron (dog friendly) / Curlew
These (8'10" x 6'6" or 2.69m x 1.98m) wooden structures, designed and built on the farm, resembling the traditional upturned boat shelter, offer lined and insulated accommodation for those who prefer not to travel ladened with tent, bedding and cooking equipment. They look out to sea through fully glazed double doors and provide an indoor/outdoor living option with their outdoor deck, very helpful for our changeable weather. They are cosy also in winter. Bicycles and vehicles can be parked discreetly beside and an outdoor storage box is provided or space in the tractor shed. Inside, a simple platform provides double or single bed options or raised seating. Each eco cabin has bedding and towels, lighting, small heater, extra electricity socket, blankets. The kitchen, loos and showers are nearby and shared with the campers. Please note there are 4 cabins please enquire for availability. On an organic farm with fresh produce available to buy on the campsite and organic dried products. Beautiful sea view.
Wheems organic farm has the most beautiful view of the cliffs and the sea. There is organic produce for sale at the house between 9 and 10am and 6 and 8pm. Fresh seasonable veg and fruit, eggs, home made bread, home made marmalade, milk etc. There are lovely beach walks and artists galleries on South Ronaldsay and a lovely restaurant The Skerries serving local fish, scallops, veg, mussels etc which is only about 4 miles away.
Posizione e vista impagabili. Peccato per la poca cura e pulizia.

  • The Eco Cabins are cozy and set in a beautiful location. It's easy to find the way to the campsite, not far from the ferry terminal in St Margaret's Hope. We didn't interact with the host during our stay, but we had everything we needed and the cabin was ready for our arrival with our names clearly displayed and they key in the lock. There is an option to buy fresh eggs and products you run out of from the owners. You can make tea, but they ask to contribute £2 for electricity costs if you want to cook a meal for yourself. We enjoyed the stay very much - especially the view. The only let down were the bathrooms - make sure you bring flip flops with you!

  • Great stay. Easy to find with amazing views. Has everything that you need: washing machine, shower, power in pods. Islay is a helpful host.

    Benjamin2017-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • This was a basic cabin, as listed, with a chair out front which was a tad wobbly, a mattress thin enough to warrant putting another set of cushions under it. I think it's £20 worth of value not £40. My other B&Bs provided much more and breakfast for same price.

    Jenny2017-05-30T00:00:00Z

Teresa was very friendly, and helped us out with tips on what to do and where to stay, and just made us feel very at home. I hope we will be staying again in the future!

For eating out; Nearby we have the Sands Hotel in Burray village. This always popular with guests & ourselves too. There are several places to consider in St.Margaret's Hope. Highly recommended by all who have been there is Skerries Bistro, just seven miles south of here.
  • Thank you Terry, Sandra and Rebecca for being such a warm and wonderful host. We loved our every bit of time at Orkney Islands and your lovely tastefully done home by the sea. Ayre of Cara was so beautiful. My wife loved the detailing and personal touché that you gave to your space. It talks a lot about a personality. • This B and B is Right before the first barrier on the waterfront with spectacular views. Their home is very well equipped for guests and they are kind and friendly. They were so helpful with advice and ideas of what to do.

  • I can not imagine a better place to book if it comes to the holiday! Terry and Sandy made our visit an extra special with their very warm welcome, they made sure that we have an access to everything that we need and feel comfortable at any point of our visit. Their place itself is very well furnished and equipped with many interesting books and magazines. All rooms are new and perfectly looked after. Hosts have a very good taste! Did not expect such a beautiful view at the back of the house with access to a very well decorated and tidy gardens, same as bbq and facilities to sit and relax. In the morning you can count on a proper breakfast that is made of fresh local products and served in a bright and spacious dining room. Terry and Sandy made sure that we have got everything on our table. Just loved it! In overall, there is nothing that could be changed and big thank you for that! Short but spent in a warm and friendly atmosphere holiday, we will be back for more amazing memories!

  • Terry and Sandy really went above and beyond to be welcoming and helpful to us foreigners. This is one of the best Airbnb experiences I've had. Their house is on an absolutely gorgeous strip of land, and it was a great landing spot each night after spending the day exploring. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the bathrooms seem brand new. The breakfast was delicious, and Terry packed us a generous bag of food when we had an early departure to the ferry. Furthermore, Terry even helped us find a place to stay for the next leg of our travels. Truly generous and warm people! I highly recommend the Ayre of Cara, as I'll be staying here whenever I return to the Orkneys.

    Kate2016-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • Terry and Sandy have been wonderful hosts. The house is very clean and tidy, the rooms are cosy and comfortable. On top of this, the location is breathtaking and the breakfast is very nice and vast. Since we visited St. Margaret's on a weekend and public transportation was not that frequent (even though there is a bus stop just in front of the B&B), Terry kindly drove us to Kirkwall and to the nearby Italian Chapel. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Orkney to stay at Ayre of Cara, without a doubt it's the best B&B I've ever been to.

Ayre of Cara B&B was one of the best accomodations we ever experienced. The hosts were very pleasant, most helpful and willing to satisfy every our wish. The B&B is brand new, the rooms are clean, pretty and well equipped - the hosts even served us fresh milk every day! Moreover, Ayre of Cara is situated on a delightful place, on the seaside facing Scapa Flow bay. There is a bus station (Cara Road End) in the immediate proximity of this accomodation. However, anyone considering getting around Orkney (e.g. to Kirkwall) by bus should study Orkney bus timetable thoroughly (the interval was around 1-2 hours). Summing it up, we were most satisfied and we would definetly stay at Ayre of Cara again in the case we were travelling to Orkney second time.

  • We had a great stay at Ayre of Cara. Terry and Sandy are lovely and they welcomed us to their beautiful place which offers amazing sunsets and views. The room was perfect, and every detail was taken care of. Breakfast is superb and cooked to your taste. Very good value for money! You can see that they are passionate about Orkney and are only too happy to share their knowledge to help you get the best of the place. I look forward to going back!

  • We've thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hannah's. Hannah is a wonderful host! She was really prompt with replying our enquiries and went out of her way to make us feel at home. The Tofts was beyond cosy and warm. The rooms were immaculately clean as was the bathroom and kitchen (Hannah was so kind as to stock the fridge with milk). We would definitely recommend Hannah's listing to anyone looking for an excellent retreat in the Orkneys and endeavour return again.

We now have wifi installed Situated in the middle of our quiet village we have a cosy double bedroom with small bathroom and well equipped kitchen / lounge The flat is within walking distance of Pentland Ferries terminal. Also within the village we have shops and pubs with a great bus service leaving every hour heading to Kirkwall (15 miles) and on wards to stromness (30miles) We also are able to provide free parking
  • This is a lovely 1 bed flat that is attached to the hotel next door. Margaret was lovely and told us many of the places to visit on South Ronaldsay. St Margaret’s Hope is a really nice village with some good pubs and local shops. Definitely recommended!

  • A great wee cosy place in a beautiful and scenic village. Megan's mum Margaret was a great help and couldn't do enough to help.

    Paul2017-07-11T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay at Megan's place. It is right by the water and very quiet. It is nice to be a little outside of Kirkwall but also close to many of the main sites we wanted to see. The town is very small but just a short walk away is a cafe and a small convenient store. The apartment is very cozy but has everything you need including a washer...which is very appreciated while traveling. This is apartment is a great value especially during the summer in the Orkney Islands when it is very busy and finding a place to stay at a decent price can be difficult.

    Michelle2017-08-18T00:00:00Z

  • this is a five minute walk from the gills bay to st margarets hope ferry , there are a couple of shops in the village and pubs it is only seconds from the sea, a good base for anyone with a car or there is a bus service if on foot. Megans mother was very welcoming

  • Great location by the waterfront and a stones throw from the ferry which was perfect for me. Great steak at nearby hotel too.

    Chris2017-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • We were attracted by the very competitive price of this accommodation, and we were not disappointed. The flat is a good size, warm and located in the heart of St Margaret's Hope, extremely close to the ferry terminal. The kitchen is very well equipped if you are looking to eat in the flat. Megan and Margaret were great hosts: any problems they helped us immediately. They were extremely nice and let us leave our bags in the flat until the ferry time at 4pm. I would definitely recommend their flat!

These small 2.69m x 1.98m wooden cabins look out to sea through fully glazed double doors, outdoor deck, on an organic farm-veg available, bedding & towels, lights, heater and an extra socket for charging things, shared kitchen, showers and loos. If this pod / cabin is booked there are 3 others please see my other listings - Oyster Catcher / Arctic Tern / Curlew
They are cosy also in winter and all have a beautiful sea view. Bicycles and vehicles can be parked in the car park on your left beyond the tractor shed or discreetly beside your pod if full. There is space in the tractor shed for bikes. Inside, there are 4 futons providing double or single bed options and you can fold them up for seating. Each eco cabin has bedding and towels, lighting, small heater, extra electricity socket, blankets. The kitchen, loos and showers are nearby and shared with the campers. Please note there are 4 cabins please enquire for availability. On an organic farm with fresh seasonal produce and organic food products available to buy at the honesty shop on the campsite. Your name will be on the blackboard outside your cabin / pod. This pod is the lower left hand side pod as you stand looking up the hill. The kitchen is equipped with hobs, small cooker, fridge, pots, pans, crockery etc and a small covered dining area. The shower block has 4 showers, 4 loos, a washing machine, 3 washing up sinks. We are an organic farm and operate with respect to the environment. Facilities are designed and built by ourselves from sustainable / local / re purposed materials and all shared equipment is second hand. Please don't expect to find modern appliances. Please separate your waste into paper / metal / glass / plastic, there is no general waste and please take any non recyclables away with you. Thanks!
  • This is the place to be if you love living on campsites. We have had wonderful days there. The showers are hot, the little kitchen site is well equiped and all the people are friendly and helpful. The boothies are nice and with a wonderful view.

  • The eco cabins were a nice stay. lovely view, nice people nad a great nature.adventure. Thanks a lot

    Caroline2016-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • We arrived after dark at the Eco cabin and our cabin was not marked so we spent quite a while searching each cabin and worrying about waking the fellow campers. The cabins are beautiful, warm and well constructed. We arrived on a clear night and enjoyed the most incredible night sky full of stars sitting outside the cabin. Unfortunately, the bed linen was not all clean and the pillow case and sheet were missing. The bathroom and kitchen are very basic and, like the cabin, were not as clean as they needed to be.

  • This is a fabulous spot on the island. Amazing views out to sea. We visited with our 5 year old daughter and she loved it. It's not often you get lovely hot showers when camping/glamping - they were ace! Although we didn't really use the kitchen it was extremely well equipped with everything you need to prepare a lovely al fresco meal! I would love to come back and stay for longer next time. Glad we dined at skerries bistro on the recommendation of wheems - beautiful fresh food with a gorgeous view again. Thanks for letting us stay!

    Leanne2016-07-05T00:00:00Z
  • The stay at Wheems Campsite place was great, the place looks like the advert on Airbnb. The honesty shop at wheems contains a really good selection of items if you are in need and there is a nice outdoor area to sit and prepare your food. If I was to return to this part of the world I would definitely return to stay here.

Wheems Bell Tent Dandelion is a lovely canvas home close to the beach, restaurants and dining, and family-friendly activities. The light and the colours are special in Orkney and Wheems has a lovely sea and sky view. I can make up a double and singles or all singles just let me know how you would like your bedding. There is a wood burning stove and shared facilities.

  • Wheems is a lovely place to stay. The views are stunning and the atmosphere relaxed and friendly. Good value accommodation on the beautiful South Ronaldsay.

    Eric2016-07-30T00:00:00Z
  • Fairly basic accommodations for the price, a bit far from the main road, and everything seemed to have an upcharge (they asked for two pounds if you wanted to actually use the kitchen to cook, for example), which sort of took away from the friendliness. That said, the location is very scenic and wild, and if you want to get away from it all for a few days, I'd still recommend it.

    Andrew2017-06-12T00:00:00Z
  • Staying in the bell tent was a really cool experience. I loved the size of the tent - very roomy. The stove they have in there for heating was a great perk, as well as the hot water bottles! A great base for me - a solo adventurer.

    Sophie2017-05-28T00:00:00Z
  • My host welcomed me in the wind and rain - he was very helpful and was obviously overworked! He said he had been very busy, I guess the bad weather had made everything hard. I loved the views from the tent - I was right on the headland overlooking the beautiful bay but it was really miserable weather. It would have been so lovely if the rain had stopped!!

    Lauren & Nic2016-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • Although we were booked into the bell tent for two nights we chose to stay at the Sorquoy caravan as it turned out to be perfect for our needs. We had a chance to see the pods at Wheems and they have the most magnificent view across the fields to the sea. We would have loved to stay there too....but we were settled and the landscape was perfect for sketching and the beach close for bird watching.

Burray is a small island linked to the east mainland of Orkney and South Ronaldsay by the Churchill Barriers. Once only accessible by boat, the farming and fishing community is now linked forever by the causeways. It has a population of around 360, a primary school, community hall, shop, hotel and harbour. Burray has beautiful sandy beaches, some of the best views across Scapa Flow and otters and seals can be seen from around the fourth barrier. Burray has the first wind turbine to be installed on the east mainland. The beautiful Bu Sands in Burray is a must visit, overlooking the north sea and the fresh winds that blow. The Orkney Fossil and Heritage Centre is a fascinating place to visit. Fossils from Orkney and around the world collected by local man Leslie Firth are displayed, some up to 380 million years old, with information and illustrations. The heritage collection was started by Leslie’s father Ernest Firth, who collected everyday items from domestic and working life in Orkney throughout the 20th century including furniture, china, woodworking tools and more. There are also new displays about traditional boatbuilding in Burray and exhibits reflecting life in Orkney during the First and Second World Wars. An Archive room has census records for Burray and South Ronaldsay from 1821 to 1901, historic photographs, various books and other documents of local interest, including original wartime manuscripts. There is a shop and tearoom. The Centre opens for the 2017 summer season in April and closes at the end of September. Opening times are 10am- 5pm For the more adventurous types, Burray hosts Orkney's only paintball venue, at Northfield, boat trips on Scapa Flow and clay pigeon shooting. There is also a vibrant community spirit in Burray that has helped host a small musical festival - GlastonBurray - and has seen work start on a crazy golf course and new play park in the village.

If this pod / cabin is booked there are 3 others please see my other listings - Heron / Arctic Tern / Curlew

  • Nice cabin set with a great view as shown in the photo, on a shared campsite. We enjoyed exploring the using the cabins as a base and exploring the Orkney Islands from here.

  • We've spend a nice stay in the Wheems Eco Cabin. The cabin is very cosy and the view of the bay is beautiful. The place is very quiet, perfect to relax. Dan, Islay's brother, is freindly and gave us good advices about the sites to visit.

  • This was an absolutely wonderful place to stay. We were looking for something similar to camping, but coming up in February, we didn't want to stay in our tent. These little wooden cabins were absolutely amazing. They are warm, cozy and have a power socket and light which was very useful. The bathroom block was clean and the showers were great. The little kitchen was also very handy for making breakfast in the morning. Our puppy absolutely loved it too! The hosts were really good at answering any emails very quickly. We would absolutely come back and stay there again.

  • Great wee place!! The camping bothy was perfect. We were toastie warm and very comfortable on the mattresses provided. We packed the car with extra blankets sleeping bags and blow up beds (just in case) but they never left the car! The showers were hot and the wee campers kitchen were great. Everyone we bumped into was so nice and helpful. We will be back!! Thanks for an unforgettable few days!

Wheems Bell Tent - Buttercup is a lovely simple canvas home on an organic vegetable farm very close to the beach and dining on the island. Most furnishings are second hand / up cycled. The facilities are powered by the 2 small wind turbines on the farm looking North. I can make up a double and singles or all singles up to 3 guests or a double and 2 singles, let me know how you would like your bedding. They have a wood burning stove and shared facilities, kitchen, 5 loos and 4 showers.
The bell tent guests have bedding, blankets, towels. They share the loos, showers and open kitchen area with the camping and yurt guests. 4 loos 4 showers. It is a very short walk to these facilities and the recycling point. Everyone has the view. My Dad Mike lives in the farmhouse at Wheems and the house is open from 9-10am and 7-8pm daily if you would like to meet him and he might have some organic in season veg and eggs for sale. If there is no one there when you arrive you will see the bell tents at the top of the track. Dad will hopefully have put your name on one of them or take the vacant bell tent. There will be a bed roll in it for the number of guests and mattresses. here is a car park to your left as you drive up the hill, just past the tractor shed, you can drive into the camp ground to offload your things but we like to keep the campground itself free of cars as the view is better for everyone without cars and there may be families or kids running around so we feel it is a nicer space without cars. The bell tents are 4 metres diameter, they have wood burning stoves in them and we provide a basket of firewood which should last a couple of evenings but there is no NO ELECTRICITY in them we provide lamps and extra firewood is £2.50 We don’t allow dogs in the bell tents so please respect this as we’d like to keep them nice for other guests. Please note that the kitchen area does not have a door, it is open to the weather at the entrance on one side - camping style. Check in is after 3pm unless by request we can prepare for you earlier. Check out is at 12-midday please. BEDDING We provide foam or futon camping mattresses that fold up or go together. If you are 3 guests we can provide 3 single bedding rolls or let me know if you would like a bedding roll for a couple? This includes a double mattress topper / double fitted sheet / 2 single duvets / pillows and you can pull 2 mattresses together. There are hot water bottles in the kitchen. Bedding over and above 2 people will be £5 each person extra for your stay please pay Dad in cash in the hours mentioned.
Recommended The Skerries Bistro offers great seafood and a beautiful view. Robertsons in the village has a lovely atmosphere and serves good food. The Workshop / Loft Gallery has gorgeous Orkney knitwear, gifts.

These (8'10" x 6'6" or 2.69m x 1.98m) wooden structures, designed and built on the farm, resembling the traditional upturned boat shelter, offer lined and insulated accommodation for those who prefer not to travel ladened with tent, bedding and cooking equipment. They sleep 2 - 4 but we advise 2-3 people as with 4 people there is no floor space left. They look out to sea through fully glazed double doors and provide an indoor/outdoor living option with their outdoor deck, very helpful for our changeable weather. They are cosy also in winter.
  • Warm and cozy cabin with a stunning view of the coast. Islay and Mike were not around often, but were very helpful and accommodating when they were. 2 things of note for visitors: 1) there is a fully functional shared kitchen, but a £2 donation is required to use the hot plate if you're making a full meal 2) visiting without a car is possible, you just need to walk about 30 minutes to get to the bus stop at St. Margaret's hope We really enjoyed our stay and dream of coming back to visit again.

  • We arrived late and some locals guided us there with Islay's indications. Location was stunning and calm and the cabin warm an confortable. We didn't met Islay or her father but other guests helped us to find the small shop and we could cook a fresh vegetable meal in the kitchen.

  • These eco cabins are amazing - a very unique and special experience and the view is unbelievable. It was a very windy night when we stayed and the cabin was still very cosy. Really good value and good fun.

  • We stayed one night in this beautiful place, and we slept like babies the both of us. The views were stunning, and waking up to cows noises in the morning is definitely something I´ll remember. The cabin was clean and the staff were friendly.

    Kari2015-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • This is glamping with a difference. I was in the Oyster picker boothy and the views are amazing! The roar of the sea, under the clearest night sky. There was a little heater in the boothy, but it wasn't that effective - I was very glad I brought lots of blankets and layers with me as I was freezing on the first night. The second wasn't too bad, but still pretty chilly. I should think it's a lot better if there are two of you. The kitchen area had everything you'd need, there is no oven, but hobs, kettles and a toaster. There were plenty of toilets and showers, which were in the same shed as the washing machine. Just outside St Margarets Hope, this is an ideal base to explore the island and Mike was really helpful, lending me a couple of maps for the two days I was there. A great little place, but take layers and blankets if visiting in the autumn/winter!

  • The cottage at Wheems is located a 5 minutes drive from the ferry in St. Margaret's Hope on a beautiful farm overlooking the sea on the west coast of South Ronaldsay. It is a beautiful, cozy cottage with everything you need to relax and rest up on an adventure to the Orkney Islands. Since everything on the main island of Ronaldsay is connected by causeways or roads this cottage is perfect for a visit. Islay is super friendly and in contact immediately if you need anything. I loved it and look forward to eventually returning someday!

  • My husband and I enjoyed our time at Wheems. The cottage was a good size for the two of us and it had everything you would need for a quiet holiday. We were there during pretty intense weather and the cottage was warm and comfortable. The area is really beautiful too.

  • The cottage is in a beautiful location with amazing views of the bay. We stayed in November and the cottage was cosy and warm with both a comfy bed and sofa bed. The kitchen was fully equipped and there was a clean bathroom with bath salts provided. I'd definitely come back again and had a lovely relaxed weekend.
