Appena prenotato a Paauilo

  • We had a lovely time in Baki & Bailey's getaway studio. It's a great place to relax that's well off the beaten path, but still only a short drive away from local activities. I recommend the Waipio lookout (plus a hike down to a black sand beach) which is only about 20 minutes away. I only wish we had more time to appreciate the serene setting. Bailey was extremely helpful and accommodating. We have no complaints and would definitely recommend this spot to friends & family.

  • Overall, Awesome. Perfect privacy makes up for limited view. Very nice to have some provided food and snacks. House was spotless and comfortable. Hot water a little unreliable, but to be somewhat expected with being off the grid. We really enjoyed Rita!

    Joshua2014-12-19T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay the Wharton's studio. The solar power was a little questionable due to the wet spring, but Bailey was great about checking up on us and making sure we were alright. The kitchen was super-well stocked with tasty treats and breakfast items. The best part was all the beach gear in the shed outside (body boards, sand mats and an umbrella!) Thanks for the great stay!

    Jackie2015-06-04T00:00:00Z
  • Bailey and Baki were lovely hosts and the property was amazing. Up the hill from the main road in a eucalyptus and native oak forest, you wake up to the sun, the birds and the occasional rooster crowing or cow mooing. It's about a 30-40 minute drive (depending on construction) to Waimea and Hilo, so pretty convenient for the N and E side of the islands, and even Volcanoes NP and Kailua Kona aren't long trips. The bed is comfortable, the bath is amazing, and everything is well-stocked. It takes a little while to figure out the tankless water heater and the water pump, but if you wanna unplug for a while this is the place. Wi-fi worked great with my laptop, though.

  • This is probably one of, if not the best Airbnb experience I have ever had. This cabin might seem out of the way but big island is huge so there's going to be a lot of driving involved anyway. Its out-of-grid-ness was not the selling point for me before my arrival but it was an unbelievable experience as it turned out. Every morning we woke up to a different adorable dog at our doorstep and the morning drive out always involved other animals along the way. The pack of piglets could be my favourite animal sighting or it could have been the pair of puppies. Baki's and Bailey's place is well-kept, well-equipped, and the hosts themselves are very friendly and helpful. We could tell from the cabin and our interaction with them that they are the kind of hosts that really go out of their way to give their guests the best and most welcoming experience they can have. There was free range eggs, lox, fresh pineapple, papaya, donna's macadamia nut cookies, and many other food ingredients provided. We had a small problem with the water supply and the hosts (who are very responsive) came and fixed it in the same morning. Internet and cell service might be challenging at times but it was honestly a negligible price my (technology addict) partner and I were willing to pay for this great cabin. If I find myself heading to the big island again in the future I will no doubt book this Airbnb again.

  • The apartment is lovely and in the middle of nowhere. We had everything we needed and enjoyed every single minute. As we arrived the fridge was filled with lot's of delicious food. It was not like arriving at an apartment from Airbnb, it was like coming home.

    Felix2014-12-13T00:00:00Z
  • We fell in love with this beautiful, scenic, secluded and serene place. The loft was awesome to sleep in, and the porch was perfect for sipping our morning coffee and look out at the greenery. We visited beaches and ate at some very cool restaurants, all which were laid out in the House Manual with detailed information about the house and area. We loved it all!

  • It was a very nice stay at Varya’s place. Everyone in our family enjoyed it. My kids loved the trampoline and playground, they had so much fun. The house was super clean with lots of great details. Varya was very helpful with all the questions we had. We will definitely come back again.

    Jie2017-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • We very much enjoyed our stay at this property. The communication with Varya easy and quick. We enjoyed the beautiful garden and the kids enjoyed playing at the playground. We highly recommend this house for families.

  • This place was perfect for our family vacation. We had a full house and never felt cramped. The large kitchen was great for cooking and spending time together as a family.

    Nathan2017-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • Great property, family friendly and comfortable. Varya was very accommodating and responsive to all inquiries. Wish we had a couple more days to explore the island.

  • Thanks for providing such a comfortable house to us. We spent a nice Chrismas holiday there. There are pans, lots kinds of seasonings, even electronic cooker and rice are prepared. It's very convenient to cook Asian food. The owner is very nice and gives us lots of useful advices. I will recommend this house to my friend.

    Jia2017-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay in Varya's home was excellent! The location is quiet, beautiful, and convenient--ocean view from the deck, one turn off the main highway. There was plenty of room for our large group. The house is very safe and baby-friendly, even on the upper level--all stairways and decks are gated, a high chair was provided. The other kids/adults loved the trampoline and all of the fresh fruit available on site. Varya is an excellent and attentive host; she answered all of my messages quickly and concisely.

    Ashlee2017-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • beautiful place, spacious with lovely porch. Our family really enjoyed the stay. Very clean, easy to communicate with the owners - would definitely recommend staying here

    Alex2017-11-04T00:00:00Z
  • The house was beautiful and as pictured. Varya had many toiletries and other equipment at the house that made for a more homey experience. I traveled with older vegetarians and they were able to cook from home every night. We enjoyed many of the fruits from her yard. The upstairs deck was awesome. The kids enjoyed playing in the nicely kept yard. The laundry machine was another great amenity. I was a little concerned that the home did not have an a/c , but the weather was perfect and we never needed It. I strongly recommend this home.

Nestle into your lounger as you escape into an Aloha state of mind, to lush pastures of grassy morning dew, billowing playfully as the trade winds blow out to the deep blue horizon of the Pacific. It is here you will find where you always belonged.
Aloha and welcome to our home! We hope that you find our spacious attached studio to be so much more than pictures will ever show. It is furnished and laid out to take every advantage of the beautiful landscape surrounding our home. There are several seating arrangements including a plush lounger, perfect to read a book or even to prop up an easel and to paint the morning sun rise over the canopy of trees in the horizon. We hope that you don't spend all of your day plopped in the grand queen-sized bed that stares off into the horizon; a morning jog along the nearby cane fields towards the fields of eucalyptus trees is just the perk you need to breathe in the sweet country air. Our kitchenette is well equipped with all the local spices you may need to prepare your treasured local produce found at nearby open markets to a homely meal. A flatscreen TV with local cable channels and a stereo system provide a base for your entertainment needs, as well as a few board games and books within our large walk-in closet.
Our home is located in the once bustling plantation town of Pa'auilo, about 40 minutes north of Hilo, 10 minutes from Honoka'a, 25 minutes south of Waimea, 30 minutes from Waipio Valley, 40 minutes from Waiakoloa and over an hour away from Kona. It is one of many villages along the Hamakua coast line. Where sugar cane was once harvested and plentiful, diversified agriculture and eucalyptus fields remain. Hamakua reaps the benefits of high rainfall providing for the lush landscape but remarkably has the most temperate climate of any region on the Big Island. Due to its rich volcanic soil, the Big Island produces some of the highest quality agriculture in the state. Coffee, macadamia nuts, and papaya are just a handful of its world reknowned crops. The Hamakua region itself is home to numerous waterfalls and specialty produce farms like mushrooms and vanilla. Waimea and its rolling hills houses the largest privately owned ranch in the country Parker Ranch; with access to a collection of locally sourced products it's easy to see that the Big Island has a rich tradition of farm to table dining culture.
  • Thank you for sharing your beautiful home! See you soon!

  • We loved it at Jo´s aAppartement She´s a very nice person and very helpfull Unfortunately she had to work, the day we arrived, but it was perfect organised, so that we found everthing perfectly prepared. Nothing to complain - we would definetly come back and stay there! Thank you very much!

    Maike2016-05-20T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed how close Jo's place was to Waipio Valley, a very beautiful place on the north end of the Island. We also appreciated and used the mini fridge and freezer, hot plate, and microwave. The view was beautiful from the studio apartment. The first night we noticed the noise from the nearby road, but not the second night.

    Lora2017-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Jo and Dennis were so warm and welcoming. Communication from start to finish was great and they waited up for our later arrival. The ohana was beautiful and so comfortable. They checked to see if we needed extra blankets, which I did. Also, Jo had freshly squeezed oj waiting for us as well as fresh oranges from their tree that we took to the beach the next day! And new release movies just in case, which we also took advantage of during our stay. It was a great, relaxing, wonderful time. Mahalo nui loa!!!

    Ruth2017-02-04T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at Josenia's! The space was beautifully appointed, comfortable, and very functional.... We prepared meals and snacks during our stay with ease. The view of the ocean, not to mention the beautiful plantings on the property, was exquisite. Jo was extremely attentive in assisting with the few requests that we made. We are grateful that Jo's property was available - a truly economical and comfortable space and well situated for visiting with family in the area.

    Bonnie2016-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • Staying at Jo's place was great. We had a very last minute reservation that she was able to accommodate, and accommodate quite well. The room is a detached studio so there's plenty of privacy, great size, great vibe with pictures of beautiful nature on the wall. The place is in between Hilo and Waipi'o so whether you want to go to town or go to the valley, it's a great location. Jo and Dennis were super cool and nice to talk to, while giving us space to relax as well. Will stay there again most definitely!

    JP2017-01-08T00:00:00Z
  • Jo was a great host - not only was she very welcoming and friendly, but she also provided me with a lot of tips and local knowledge about the region around paauilo. The place itself is absolutely beautiful and very clean. There's a noisy road beside the house, but that didn't bother me very much. Clear recommendation - I would book it again.

    Alain2016-01-13T00:00:00Z
  • Jo was an incredibly kind and accommodating hostess; I had a hard time sleeping because I'm sensitive to traffic noise, and she was so gracious in allowing me to shorten my stay and even went out to buy little mirrors to Feng shui the noise away:). Sadly for both of us I was not a good fit for the space (and other people who are very sensitive to sounds may not be either) but she obviously cared so much about her guest's comfort, and otherwise her spot is super cute, clean, convenient.

The guest house will be accented by local fruit, flowers, fresh local chocolate, and other bounty from the land upon arrival. Wi-Fi, a new bed, and an improved driveway are among the upgrades this month!
Large balcony and fresh trade wind air. Peaceful view of the ocean looking North. Kitchen with mini fridge/freezer. No oven. Tile bathroom/shower with Stained glass. There is a new, full-size bed in the main indoor living space, extra linens are stored in drawers underneath the bed. There is a twin bed in the loft. Local coffee, tea, and chocolate tea are provided as well as a variety of local spices and honey.
We visit Laupahoehoe Point regularly, our nearest easy ocean access. For hiking, Forest, and native forest Kalopa park is straight up the mountain. Hilo is a 50 minute drive from here, end it will take you about that long to get to the nearest white sandy beaches.
  • We had a great time at Josh's off the grid farm house. The location was perfect as we were able to explore Waipio Valley, Hilo, and Volcano with ease. Upon arrival, Josh provided us with fruit from his farm, home made chocolate, and coffee, which were the perfect snacks during our stay. I am glad to have rented a 4 wheel drive Jeep during my time on the Big Island, as accessing the Airbnb requires driving off the main road a little bit. Josh, thanks for letting us stay with you such last minute! We already miss hearing the sounds of all your animals and nighttime creatures, and waking up to the gorgeous view of the water. Hope to be back in the future!

    Mike2018-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Enjoyed a great time on this property-gorgeous view and closest we could get to everything we wanted to enjoy while we were on this side of the island but still giving us the quiet we set out to find on a budget. Joshua gave us all the privacy we desired and left us coffee and chocolate as well as fresh local fruits. Place was nice and clean too and the sounds of all the birds and animals at night was the perfect lullaby to fall asleep with! We enjoyed the kitty which we deemed Mooncat who kept us company during our stay. Make sure to follow his great directions finding the place vs trusting your GPS and try to do it during the day the first time. ALOHA!

    Tracy2017-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • We had a completly wonderful stay at Joshua's K- Farm Studio. Private, quiet, fun morning bird song, dark skies, elemental. The road down in seems daunting, but we did it in our low-slung Dodge Spark. It's a simple place, with a great shower. Lovely lanai for all times of day or night. Joshua is the best host, super respectful, yet responsive. We were happily enamored with our stay.

    Julie2017-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time at Joshua’s farm hideaway. The fresh fruit and chocolate was a nice touch. We were also surprised to find that he seemed to have completed some upgrades after we booked as the bed was better than the photos showed and he added wifi which was very helpful. The shower was a nice surprise for a cabin like this. We wanted something secluded and a bit “off grid” to live like the locals and this was absolutely perfect. One of the cats that Joshua has was extremely friendly and provided us with lots of entertainment while drinking wine on the porch in the evening. We explored the town of Waimea which had great art shops (Gallery of Great Things) and restaurants (Merrimack and Big Island Brewhaus) which we loved as well as driving down into the Waipio Valley and horseback riding on Kohala Ranch - which were all amazing. Such a great area! Cheers

    Carl2017-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • This was an amazing stay. Everything was as mentioned. Host was very flexible and relaxed. Offered free chocolate and anything else we needed. Shower, sheets, home was all clean. Would highly recommend to anyone. A side note, I was worried about having power at first but was able to fully charge laptops and cellphones with no problems!

    Houston2017-03-19T00:00:00Z
  • Great host. We were his first airbnb guests and he had everything set up really nice for us when we arrived. He's a really laid back guy who gave us advice about what to do in the area and was quick to respond to texts when we had questions, but also just let us do our own thing. He also gave us a lot of delicious fruit! The spot is a cute little one room building with a good view of the ocean from the very large porch and Josh has been renovating so the bathroom and kitchen are all new.

    Darrow2016-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Honestly, we feel like this place would be great for some- obviously they care with the basket of flowers, fruits and chocolate. In my mind these are finishing touches... I would have preferred a cleaner home without the extras. Great views, nice little place, lots of potential, cute cat. Our critiques: He did end up asking for an extra $10 a day for more than one person. Since we are a married couple and left the place cleaner than we found it plus paid the cleaning fee, I don't feel like paying extra for more than one person is reasonable. The curtains that are there don't provide much privacy. Biggest problem for us was we have our doubts that the towels and linens had been cleaned and there was black grease on almost all the surfaces (assuming this somehow comes from the stove).

    Ashley2017-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • We loved Josh's place! We enjoyed his chocolate, fresh fruits and nice and relaxing atmosphere. He showed us around his property and let us meet his cats. We loved having "Fairy" (siamese cat) staying with us one night and she was very affectionate and sweet. Nice location for going to Waipio valley or First Friday in Hanokaa. Would definitely stay at this place again!

This lovely cottage sits on 8 beautiful , very quiet & private acres, with wide expansive ocean views. There are high cathedral ceilings and large floor to ceiling windows all around to make the most of the inspiring views while reading, writing, drawing, painting or just simply sitting and taking in the peace and calm that this lovely cottage offers.
This special piece of paradise is very private and quiet and completely off the grid. Please remember to be conservative with lights, cooking, and all power appliances.
  • One of the best Airbnb homes I stayed in. The host is outstanding and the house is spacious, very well equipped and clean. Kitchen is well equipped for significant cooking. We cooked, grilled and BBQed around the clock. The place is quiet and secluded. Yet, it is located just 25 minutes from Waimea where there is everything you need.

We provide an apartment in the main house for a farm stay vacation or short term rental, and have welcomed guests come from all over the world. Our typical visitors have been those looking for a more homegrown experience of Hawaii, who are excited about the range of activities around us. Our favorite suggestions include hiking in the nearby Waipio Valley and Kalopa State Park, going to First Friday in Honokaa Town or taking in a movie at our historic Honokaa Peoples Theatre. We especially recommend eating at the amazing Grandmas Kitchen, taking a day trip to Kohala, Kona, Hilo or Volcano…or just enjoying the quiet of the homestead, a relaxing hot tub, and a walk in the Paauilo countryside. This is a great place to visit and we are happy to be able to share it. Keolamauloa provides an apartment in the main house for a homestead stay – as a vacation or short term rental. The restful accomodation features a private entrance, fully equipped kitchen, living room, bathroom and two bedrooms (each with a double bed). Additional ammenities include laundry, wifi, foosball, tv/dvd, and the soothing sound of small waterfalls. Native banana, koa, kukui, and ohia trees provide the shade for hapu ferns, taro, awa and noni. On a stroll in the gardens and forest, you’ll visit the chickens hard at work, the pet pig, eating and resting, and the ocean beyond. The forest is filled with the sound of birds and the frequent view of a circling I’o (the endangered, native Hawaiian Hawk). These rates are for a minimum stay of 3 nights. There is a 20% surcharge for a stay of 2 nights. This is a smoke-free property / please leave your pets at home and enjoy ours during your stay. E Komo Mai! Come and enjoy! More about our farm: A work in progress… Laulima – “many hands” contribute to the restoration and care of Keolamauloa. Even the animals have their work and contribution. Our investment in the future is the restoration of the native forest and wildlife habitat. When we arrived at Keolamauloa in 1983 we faced the daunting task of reclaiming a treasure that had been neglected for many years. Guinea grass and scrub guava dominated what had once long ago been a native Ohia forest. Fallen cyprus trees were buried in the head-high weeds. Now 25+ years later we have cleared and planted over 300 native trees and plants. With the guidance and support of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), we are restoring the native forest and creating wildlife habitat to preserve and protect our fragile ecosystem. Our island was once the home of a people who lived on what they could hunt, gather and grow. Today we are challenged to return to a simpler way of life. Fresh, locally grown food for our family is the goal of our large gardens where we grow taro, sweet potato, banana, and a variety of other fruits and vegetables.
Keolamauloa is a 4 acre family homestead located on the Hamakua Coast of Hawaii Island, at a cool elevation of 1800 feet. The mountain neighborhood of Pa’auilo Mauka is dotted with verdant pasturelands and old family homesteads…evidence of the community’s rich agricultural and cattle ranching history. We moved to Keolamauloa in 1983, where we began the restoration of the existing historic buildings and grounds. They raised a large family and over the past 30 years, have worked to nurture and perpetuate a shared vision of sustainable living.
  • Such a cute place, with outdoor spaces, a big yard, beautiful hottub. Balances indoor and outdoor living in an awesome way, in a jungle-like setting.

    Nol2017-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • Our cheerful host Kaye was there to greet us and allowed us an early check-in, which was very helpful. She showed us all about this unique property and shared its interesting history with us. The listing was accurate and the accommodation very spacious and well-equipped. The curbside parking, the laundry, and the wonderful outside authentic Japanese hot tub were much appreciated. This neighborhood is far from the beaten path -- about an hour and a half from Kona and about forty-five minutes from Hilo. This location is at some elevation, so it's not always sunny, but it's only a half-hour drive back to the west coast beaches for sun. This is a quiet, lovely, green place -- no crowds here.

  • We had a lovely stay in this serene, beautiful location on this northeastern side of the island, complete with babbling brook sounds and roosters & chickens nearby Our lodging was roomy, comfortable, and spotless for the two of us...we made fantastic omelettes with the fresh farm-grown kale and eggs we were welcomed with in our kitchen. The classic wooden tub was perfect to relaxing in; we enjoyed using the macadamia nut cracker nearby, and the living room was spacious enough to have a masseuse come to the house for deep tissue work and Chinese cupping treatments. It is a 20-30 minute drive to Honokaa (Aulani Cafe was awesome for dinner), Waimea (we loved Hawaii Style for its huge kahlua pork omelettes with oversized pancakes) and the Hamakua coast to Papaaloa Country Store (lau lau plates & groceries) and elsewhere for food, excursions, and checking the farmers' markets. We missed out on stopping in to Big Island Brew House, but next time!

  • Wonderful, private, huge, tastefully decorated living space! Great location for rest, and as a home base to explore the north half of the Island. Cool breezes at this elevation eliminate the need for artificial air conditioning. Outdoor hot tub was awesome. Host was very generous, attentive, listened to our interests and help direct our time to maximize our experiences. Highly recommended!

  • Wow! What a lovely place! The grounds are very pretty, and the setting is very quiet. The space is filled with light -- so welcome as we stayed during a rather rainy time. Welcome to Hale Luana, the house of comfort and relaxation. This grand home is so comfortable you will not want to leave. Located just south of famed Honoka'a on the historic Hamakua Coast and close to Waipio Valley, Waimea, waterfalls, quaint shopping spots and ocean adventure areas. Please note: all rates apply to 2 guests. Additional guests are $25 per night plus taxes. Maximum occupancy is 10 guests. Our on-site caretaker is available for guests who would like a greeting and orientation to the estate and is readily available (but completely out of site and sound) to assist you during your stay. Parents please be aware that the property is not safe for walking babies, toddlers or small children because of many unprotected stairs, high-end and breakable decor. We welcome older children and infants (equipment is provided including a port-a-crib, high chair, pack'n'play and infant gym). As you enter the 2.5 acre property through the palm lined driveway, you'll know you've found your 'home away from home'. Walk up the wide front stairs and pause on the front lanai to enjoy the expansive lawn and garden views. Then step inside and be greeted by the grand, open living spaces. The living room, dining area and kitchen are all open with a high, vaulted ceiling and wide sliding doors that open onto the huge lanai with an ocean view. Trade breezes flow through the plantation style house daily. Our favorite spot is the 600 square foot back lanai where you can gaze upon the ocean, dine on the teak table with seating for 6 or walk down to the hot tub on the deck below. The kitchen is stocked with everything you'll need for cooking 'today's catch' or farmer's market produce. The living room has plenty of comfortable seating for your group, a flat screen TV, stereo and music library. Additional to the outside dining is the inside dining with another long table and seating for 10. Just off the kitchen is a large reading room with 4 comfy chairs and ottomans and a full library to indulge in. While the living spaces of the house are all open concept, the 4 bedrooms are each contained in one of the four corners of the house for utmost privacy. Both the Master Bedroom and Bedroom 2 have king size beds, en-suite bathroom, flat screen TV and access to the back lanai through French doors that are screened in case you want to sleep with the doors open and the breezes and sounds of nature. The Master Suite also includes walk-in closets. The Master Bathroom is elegantly designed with walk-in marble shower with 2 shower heads and marble bench as well as a soaking tub, a separate WC and double vanity sinks. Bedrooms 3 and 4 share a luxurious bathroom complete with marble tile and a bathtub with a shower. Bedroom 3 has a king size bed and flat screen TV and Bedroom 4 has a queen size bed and lovely garden views. Each of the 4 bedrooms is finished with high quality linens, elegant touches, ceiling fan and view of either the ocean or gardens. There is additional sleeping on a single pull-out bed in the living room and a couch with a firm, down cushion long enough for a small adult to comfortably sleep. Hale Luana is the complete gathering spot vacation rental. With plenty of room for each guest to spread out inside or out, a large hot tub and 600 square foot ocean view lanai. This is a place you'll come back to year after year....start your experience now! A/C Notes: No AC Special Terms: There is a caretaker on site.

Private custom built home on working family sheep farm. Ocean views with private lanai, full kitchen and bath, washer and dryer. Lots of windows for light, air circulation and space to spread out. Write code, a score, your memoirs, paint in the garden. Go into the village to golf, hike in the rainforest park. Go to the beach, horseback ride, stargaze, indulge in fine dining. Listen to the quiet, relax, renew, create. We love our cooler elevation, our tropical gardens, and having a place where work is meaningful and productive. We produce wool products from our flock of Romney sheep and take them to the farmer's market. Our egg laying hen flock (NO roosters!) and two heifer cows complete our farm's livestock. This is a place of non-distraction, color saturation and room to move, think, believe, create. Close enough for lots of activities, and stuffing yourself with world class Pacific Rim cuisine. We have 100% grass fed homegrown Maluhia Farm burgers available for your lanai barbecue.

  • Yes, we would definitely recommend this Private Piece of Paradise. Staying at Jan & John’s cottage was a delight! It was spacious, well-appointed and clean. We had no negative feelings after opening the door of “what are we gonna find in here?” CLEAN, COMFORTABLE & CHARMING is what we discovered. Well-appointed quality; comfy bed, sheets, towels, appliances, pots and pans and atmosphere (inside & out!). And peace and quiet. From our back lanai we savored the sweeping view down the green hillside to the vast ocean and never-ending sky. The surrounding pastures were serene. We enjoyed watching the sheep, heifers, and chickens move about, all without ANY farm smell (incase that is a concern of yours). Mahalo Jan & John – well done! P.S. This was our 1st time using Airbnb and it will not be our last. As an old school former travel agent and hotel administrator, I was very concerned over what we might experience with this process of booking and staying at someone’s individual home-based accommodations… My 20something son said “just get over it mom, it’s the new thing!” And, I have to say, I was proven wrong and very happy with this new side of the industry! GO AIRBNB!

  • We loved staying in this guest house. It was exactly as described in the listing. The furnishings were lovely and the place was super clean. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was great with a fabulous shower curtain. The kitchen was nicely stocked with dishes and utensils as well as some pantry basics. It was cool when we were there so we didn't use the outdoor shower but it's really pretty. The lanai is picturesque and comfortable. We enjoyed the view of the ocean and some very peaceful sheep and chickens. If you're a knitter, ask Jan about her hand dyed yarn. The location is very quiet. The WiFi was good. We'd definitely stay here again.

  • Great place, location, and hosts!! I absolutely loved this house, and plan to stay here again when I'm in the area. The house is clean and quite, very well appointed, and much nicer than the pictures show. I really enjoyed speaking with the hosts, and plan to come back when I'm building my house on the island, 1) so I have a nice comfortable place to stay, and 2) so I can take notes on the very well thought out place they have built. Great experience, and highly recommend it.

Take your slippers off and walk barefoot around this Native Hawaiian Forest. At Ahu Lani Sanctuary you can enjoy ocean and mountain views and the quiet peace of being nestled within a private 24 acre native Hawaiian Ohia and Koa forest. This off-grid 6 acre ranch has 10 bedrooms and 5 baths. A wrap-around Lani makes for great gathering spaces to enjoy meals, relax and read, nap, and hang out with the friends/family. Enjoy yoga, meditation, and more in the 30 foot round room.
If you desire a peaceful place to relax and live the Aloha spirit, Ahu Lani Sanctuary is perfect. At the end of the road, enjoy trees and birds for neighbors and the breeze as your companion throughout the day. At 3,000 feet of elevation the temperature is cooler but pleasant with mid to high 80s during the day and high 60s at night. Another perk of this elevation is the lack of bugs and mosquitoes. Enjoy some of the clearest night skies in the world! Once you arrive at Ahu Lani you won't want to go anywhere, but if you do desire some Big Island adventures, Waipio Valley is only 13 miles away, down through Historic Honoka'a Town. Ahu Lani is adjacent to the Kalopa Forest Reserve which has great hiking trails for exploring. Hapuna (one of the nicest beaches on all of the islands and arguably the world) is only 30 miles away through Waimea. Get to Volcano in an hour and change and explore the Hamakua coast and the plentiful waterfalls only minutes away. This land is sacred and will take your breath away. The 30-foot round room is ready for yoga, mediation, dance, and group gatherings. Go for a walk among the native Hawaiian Ohia and Koa trees and get lost in time. You won't want to leave!
Our closest neighbor is 1/4 mile away, Ahu Lani is at the end of the road at 3,000 feet elevation and is surrounded by native forest conservation land. Due to the elevation and colder temperatures we do not have Koki frogs and the mosquitoes aren't as thick as lower elevations. Nights can get into the high 50s and daytime temps can reach 90s. Rain and sunshine trade places throughout the day, which makes for rainbows and amazing cloud displays. Catering, yoga instruction, vehicle rentals, and massage services are also available.
  • This place is very special. If your main desire is to connect with nature, this is a perfect spot. The land is magical. I brought a group of 10 for a yoga/energy healing retreat and it was perfect for our needs. We had several nature meditation days that were so nurturing and wonderful. Garret was a wonderful host. He was kind, helpful, and also alot of fun. I hope to bring another group in the spring.

    Meredith2017-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • My (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) team rented this amazing off the grid place for four days. We enjoyed the serene and lush environment. The beautiful yoga/meditation room, to which we invited Maty Ezraty a great yoga teacher. The tasty food that Garrett made (for an extra cost). The bit of off roading (in our rental jeep) required to get to the location. I highly recommend this rental for groups looking to bond by skirting traditional rentals and going off the beaten path.

This large beautiful single family home is just a 10 minute walk to Kalopa State Park, 10 minute drive to Honoka'a town, and 20 minutes to Waimea. Experience the beauty of the Hamakua Coast as this location is perfect for any adventure. Situated between Hilo and Kona, you are close to Farmer's Markets, restaurants, hospital, banks, grocery stores, gas, shopping, and much more. Honokaa is a quiet town, so if you are looking for serenity this is the one for you.
Your private bedroom is on the opposite side of the house. On your side you have 1.5 bathrooms and a second bedroom with a full size futon. You also have private access to the lanai where you can enjoy your morning coffee or tea.
I am about 1/2 mile from Kalopa State park and a 12 minute drive to Honokaa town. My home is for travels who want to get away from the city and enjoy some peace and quiet.
  • Tammie is a great host, she is very friendly and kind. We had a wonderful time living there. The house is very clean and beautiful, you can have a ocean view from the porch. Great place and great people

    Binghui2017-05-22T00:00:00Z
  • Tammie is a great host. Very welcoming, uncomplicated and friendly. The house is beautiful with a big and nice garden. You can even see the ocean in the distance. The two rooms were very comfortable and it was clean. You have a lot of privacy and even 1,5 bathrooms! The house is not very central though and you have to bring a car and drive a bit around for visiting the Big Island - but yes, it is big! We would like to come back and can defenitely recommend it!

    Felicitas2017-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • First off, Tammie's house is beautiful! Huge yard, super clean, spacious, and cute house with a nice porch and great views. And just down the road from Kalopa State Park. And close to Tex Drive-In for fresh malasadas! I basically got half of the entire house to myself (1.5 bathrooms, a bedroom, and another room with a fouton), which was a crazy amount of space for one person, but made me feel more at home. She let me do laundry and let me have free range of the kitchen if I wanted to use. Check-in and out was simple and Tammie was super easy to talk to. She also has the sweetest dog ever--so that makes a dog-lover like me really pleased! The best airbnb I've stayed in on the Big Island because it was so comfortable and easy to get to almost anywhere on the island within an 1.5 hours. Would definitely stay here again!

    Molly2017-09-19T00:00:00Z
  • Tammie has a beautiful home in a lovely location. We so enjoyed having Kalopa State Park close by where we could meet Hawaiians and hike in a native, ancient forest.

    Lynn2017-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • This is the perfect place for quiet and relaxing evenings. Surrounded by nature and wildlife we really enjoyed the stay. The house was clean and spacious. A car is definitely recommend for this place. Tammie is a great host. Very welcoming, friendly and relaxed. Her pets are very sweet! We would stay here again for our next vacation to the Big Island!

  • This was a lovely home with 2 rooms and 1.5 bathrooms which was great! Very private, safe and beautiful location in the country side near Kalopa Park and somewhat close to honokaa town and pictureque Waipio Valley. Recommend finding it in the daylight for your first time with specific directions from Tammie. She was an amazing host!

  • I had a little trouble finding this place, but it was oh-so worth it. Recommend finding before dark. The guest quarters are spacious and Tammie keeps an impeccable house. Take some time to relax and enjoy the view from the lanai. Tammie was a gracious and easy going host. This was a special find.

The colors in this room are reminiscent of a beach on the Kohala/Kona coast nicknamed Kua Bay. The art is a bit eclectic. Your towels will be in your room on a small bookcase, and water and pamphlets about our area will be resting on an antique sewing machine. Our home is at least 10 miles from grocery stores or restaurants, so I would be happy to offer you fruit or a snack if you are hungry. About 6 minutes away is beautiful Laupahoehoe Beach park. (Not for swimming, but breathtaking.)
We live in an original plantation village. Island bird songs greet the morning. Coqui frogs welcome the evening. Rain and sunshine feed the land and our spirits. Our home is set behind Golden Shower and other ancient trees. From the French doors in the guest bedroom, across the grassy yard, ocean rises up into view. We love the peaceful setting and rich history of our neighborhood and look forward to sharing this with you in an escape into old Hawaii. (We also have a little dog, Thor.)
I love the peaceful setting, kind neighbors, the sound of grass blowing in the wind, the coqui frogs' song in the evening and bird sounds in the morning. I love the pink sunrises that fill our home with soft hues. I love the gentle evenings that move the tall white clouds into view over the pacific horizon.
  • Host helped me find location in the rain. Quiet, secluded, and clean. Thanks!

  • We enjoyed the patio space just outside our room, and the fact that you can open up one of the French doors to let the breeze in at night was pretty dreamy (it's screened). The room itself is nice and the bed is very comfy, but we were sharing a bathroom with 5 people/kids so it was noisy and it felt a little weird to be at the house. Kira is sweet and the location is nice for exploring the hamakua coast!

    Annie2017-07-29T00:00:00Z
  • Kira est très sympathique, sa maison est très jolie et bien placée (campagne, calme, sur la route de Waimea et Honokala). La chambre est très agréable et confortable. Nous recommandons sans hésiter !

  • Kira's home is lovely, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Even when we booked at the last minute, Kira was kind and welcoming, making sure that we had everything we needed. The room and bathroom were impressively clean and neat, and the lanai just outside the bedroom has beautiful views of the ocean that we enjoyed while eating breakfast in the morning. This is a wonderful value, and I highly recommend it to travelers on the Big Island!

(During the dry summer months our grass has been a bit less lush than usual.)

Don't let the location fool you - our home is a beautiful place from which you can easily drive to any of the many beautiful destinations the island has to offer. Spacious, beautiful home with a comfy fireplace room, spacious kitchen, beautiful living room, dining room & back yard patio & bbq are shared with our family. Located at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac with ocean breezes and a lovely view. Your bedroom and private bath are newly remodeled - just for you! Hope to see you soon!
Newly updated & remodeled, the bed & bath are tiled and spacious, clean & cool. We are a laid back & flexible family - we encourage you to enjoy our space with us! Grill on the back lanai, enjoy a drink watching the clouds over the ocean, join us for dinner or a movie. We can be as involved in your stay as you'd like. PLEASE NOTE we are woodworkers and there are stacks of wood around and often sawdust swirls onto the floors inside the house. We have a hungry family of 4 that extensively uses the kitchen - guests are MORE than welcome to use the kitchen & all amenities, but it IS used for full meals every day, so may often be in a state of transition.
Our neighborhood is quiet and friendly with children playing safely. Please drive slowly up the street! Honokaa town is a sleepy, wonderful nook on the island, and our corner of the town is a great place to experience the Hamakua coastline. Close to Waipi'o valley, equidistant from Hilo or Kona, an easy and beautiful drive to any of the treasures of the Island. Feel free to ask our advice! We will be more than happy to offer suggestions or recommendations to make your trip the best possible.
  • Bref arrêt d'une nuit chez JR & Becky, qui ont une magnifique maison ! Ils sont également très organisés, très bon AirBnb. Nous sommes totalement tombés amoureux de leurs formidables animaux !

  • JR and Becky's Honokaa house was one of the best Airbnb experiences we have had! The house itself is beautiful, clean and spacious. The bed is ultra comfortable and shower is huge! We specifically chose this spot because Becky was willing to take us down into the Waipio Valley so we didn't have to walk down the steep hill before our 9 mile trek to Waimanu Valley. Becky even picked us up with her dog and daughter when we returned! We have never experienced such hospitality and I would highly recommend people staying with JR and Becky! Fabulous experience!!

Welcome to your beautiful, 700sf downstairs apartment. Included in your Big Island stay are a private entry, kitchenette, full bath, queen bed (futons available for kids), wireless internet and TV as well as hot tub access! You'll be just minutes from Historic Honoka'a town which is home to charming shops, some great new restaurants and the Honoka'a People's Theater. You'll also be just a short drive from the breathtakingly magical Waipio Valley!
Our home is healthy, happy and open minded. We're excited to welcome people of all shapes, sizes, colors, backgrounds and personal preferences!
Our neighborhood is very friendly and relatively quiet, though we are serenaded most nights (but not too loudly) by the coqui frogs!
  • Matt’s place is modern, clean and more spacious than expected. We enjoyed taking a dip in the hot tub after a long day and saying hello to his two dogs. This place is a great value and perfect if you’re just visiting the little town of Honokaa and/or planning on checking out Waipio Valley.

  • Matt and his family were awesome hosts. Matt was very prompt in answering all questions and provided us with instructions leading up to our stay. Their home was very clean and provided all the necessary amenities.Their place was perfect for our 4 day stay. The location allowed us to travel to all parts of the island and return at night to the secluded and quiet neighborhood. We are thankful for great hosts and a beautiful home.

  • There’s not a more hospitable family. They we very welcoming and inviting. Our questions were answered and the tips and advice were invaluable. The Waipio Valley is incredible. The place was clean and comfortable. My wife even has the Everyone soap added to her Amazon acct! Top notch people and accommodations. Can’t wait to come back!

  • Talk about Ohana! Matt and Krysta were amazing hosts, making sure to be at the site to welcome us to our temporary home and to introduce us to the house puppies. The space itself is clean, spacious and tasteful. The bed was very comfortable, and tons of TV stations to watch, if you’re in need of downtime. Being that the studio is below their living space, there was a bit of noise, but nothing obtrusive, and the dogs were fun and cute. Keo was always there to say hello when we returned from our journeys! Honoka’a is a great spot to chill for a couple of nights... close enough to the North Kona beaches for a nice day but nice to return to, and so close to Waipo Valley! We’d recommend this to anyone traveling on the Big Island! Mahalo!

    Amy2017-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • Matt's place was absolutely fantastic! Clean, spacious and a truly beautiful space. Wish we had stayed more than one night. Nearby Waipi'o Valley and some other spots we wanted to check out. The hosts were very friendly, accommodating, and helpful. Definitely one of the best Airbnb experiences thus far!

  • This is exactly what I look for in an airbnb property. A place that makes you feel at home. Kids (cute...and not loud at all). Check. Dogs (friendly). Check. A lovely, well appointed, and large, private room in a terrific neighborhood. Check. And terrific hosts. Check. We had a blast visiting the valley and Honoka'a, and surrounding area. This property was a perfect "home" base for everything.

2 bedrooms are in a private wing of the house with their own bath. This is an amazing old Hawaii Plantation Managers Hall, with 12 foot ceilings throughout. Huge 47' lanai with tradewinds, sun deck, incredible ocean views. Lush tropical landscaping. My guests tell me they like the "old Hawaii" or "the real Hawaii" that my home offers. Located just off the highway, yet a world away from the hustle and bustle of the resorts. Just a few miles from beautiful Waipio Valley, home to the Kings.
Experience old Hawaii in this large plantation home. You have 2 bedrooms in your own "wing" of the house, with its' own bath, close the door to that wing for privacy. There is also a 3rd bedroom for rent, sharing the same bath as the other 2 bedrooms. Paauhau is called the "Land of Sunshine" but it is on the lush east shore, and the Tradewinds provide a wonderful breeze. In winter, whales can be seen from the large lanai. This home was built in 1920, and it has all the charm of that era, 12 foot ceilings, large rooms, a huge covered lanai (porch). Located 2 miles from Honokaa, where you have restaurants, shopping, hospital, grocery, banks, theater, and much more. But, no nightlife this side, this is for those who like peace and tranquility- with an amazing view.
This is "old Hawaii" a former sugar cane camp, this was the social hall for the managers. Very few tourists venture here. Neighborhood is mostly local families who have been here for generations. Very safe.
  • Very nice, the house is so beautiful and has a perfect view.

  • We chose this property for our base to visit the attractions on the Hamakua Coast. Everything was perfect! What a spot. After two days we decided to make this our "home base" for our entire trip next time we visit the Big Island. Galen was most gracious and provided us with a wealth of knowledge regarding what to see and what to avoid for our day trips. The home is a jewel. High ceilings, a private wing for bathing and sleeping, beautiful kitchen/dining setup and the lanai. Sitting on the lanai with a cold beverage and marveling at the view we had all to ourselves made us want to make this "our spot". Pictures do not do it justice. The warmth and charm of this true plantation style home are matched by Galen's knowledge and enthusiasm for Hawaii's land and culture. Mahalo

  • Galen was an amazing host and was very accommodating in everything. I was on the Big Island for a spa week that required a special diet and I had free range of the kitchen and he even clean off a shelf for me in the refrigerator. He is very easy to talk with and very informative on places to go. His dog Archie was amazing and so friendly. The best part was by far the private bath that we get to use. The view from the porch is amazing and very cool and breezy. Highly recommend staying here while on the Big Island!!!

  • I had a wonderful stay! A very friendly host and a beautiful house! I can only recommend staying there!!

  • We reserved the Plantation but in the end due to unexpected guests there, Pauhaa Investments upgraded us to another property which far exceeded our needs and in addition had a superb ocean view and wonderful gardens. It was well equipped and furnished and had very welcome laundry facilities. (www.airbnb.com/rooms/(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) ) Galen was most helpful in his communications, gave great directions and responded promptly to queries.

    Darren2017-03-21T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful home with unique history. Gaylene was a kind host and Archie was a delight to be around. Highly recommend.

  • After a few days on the Kona side of the island, we escaped to the quieter life of Honokaa, and stayed at the Hamakua Coast Plantation. Excellent choice, as it turned out. Host Galen was fabulously welcoming and helpful, and we much enjoyed the conversation on the expansive lanai. The recently renovated bathroom with semi-outdoor shower/tub was so beautiful we kind of wanted to spend all our time just in there. The location has a bit of a distant ocean view over the back hedge, and while outside of Honokaa the downtown is probably less than a 5-minute drive away. Beautiful home, awesome host, highly recommended.

    Charlie2017-04-01T00:00:00Z
  • My son and I arrived to a great welcome. We enjoyed cocktails with the host and a grand view of the Pcific from his very comfortable lanai. During the week we came and went as we pleased. Galen was a treasure trove of info on local restaurants and other attractions. His hospitality was unmatched by other venues I have used. I would highly recommend his home to anyone. I will return in the future knowing that my choice is the best!!

We call our home Honokaa's Sweet Spot as it is within close walking distance to everything Honokaa. Honokaa has great restaurants, sweet shops, a well known historic theatre, public swimming pool and 9-hole golf course with a beautiful view of the Pacific. Sweet Spot has all the comforts of home. It is secluded with a beautiful ocean view, and the kitchen has everything you may need for the perfect island meal. Our place is great for all types of travelers from families to solo adventurers.
Our home is such a sweet place which has been newly remodeled within the past few years. Our yard is lush with lots of avocados, banana, mango (all when in season) and it even has a fire ring for those beautiful nights in Honokaa. This plantation style home is the perfect place to relax and enjoy all that Hawaii's Big Island has to offer.
Our neighborhood is a wonderful place to call home. Kids play on the street and families are friendly and respectful. Please stay cautious and drive slowly down the street and keep a watch for children and pets playing in and around the street. In this rural part of the Big Island, you may hear frogs at night and roosters in the morning. The main street where there is shopping, great restaurants, movies, etc. is within a few blocks of our home. Literally just down the street is a public swimming pool, park with playground & baseball fields, tennis courts and track along with the famous Tex Drive-in restaurant with the best Malasadas the Island has to offer.
  • What an amazing house that is in such a great central location on the island. It was a perfect stay. Thank you for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home.

    Kari2017-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • Jennifer's house was beautiful! Super clean and with every amenity we could ever ask for! There were games, cards, and movies for you to use once the town quiets down. The town was absolutely charming! Thank you very much!!

    Eryan2016-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • We had the best time & we find Jennifer not just a nice person but she was an outstanding host. Her home is super clean, super comfy, Jennifer made us feel home & was just a phone call away, she went above & beyond to make our stay as comfortable as she would do to her own family. We felt like family. Location is the best you can find in big island, u are 1 h away from both side of the island. Thanks Jennifer!! I'll be back:-)

    Khadija2017-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Honokaa was a great location for a base. Jennifer's home was very comfortable and private. She quickly responded to any needs. The 5 of us had plenty of space to hang out. Ocean views but if you are out touring all day, that is a small point. Expect roosters crowing now and then. We loved it. Romeo the neighbor cat was a bonus, but not if you have allergies. The kitchen may already have some condiments and spices so check before you buy. We would return again.

    Patsy2017-08-03T00:00:00Z
  • We didn't get to meet Jennifer but our stay at her unit was great. Clean and comfortable home with everything you could possibly need. Our last few days on Big island were quiet and easy.

    Brandon2017-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • We liked the comfortable and clean space for the 4 of us. Kitchen is large and well equipped, which is a good thing since Honoka'a businesses appear to be closed most of the time (except for a good grocery store). Big windows provide nice views of lush vegetation on the hillside location.

    Paul2017-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • Great things about the house: - Great value for the price - Lots of amenities, like beach towels, snorkeling equipments, utensils, expresso machine, board games, ukelele, and more - Host is very nice, easy to communicate with and very responsive - Kitchen and living room renovation looks great Things to consider: - Some parts of the house are not as nice as the ones shown in the photos, so set expectation accordingly. But again for the price it is still a great value

    Eric2016-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great home in a nice quiet location. The house was plenty big enough for four adults travelling together. There are two cats that also hang around that are adorable and love a pat, however if you aren't a cat person, that's ok because they don't approach you. The host was very easy to communicate with and gave great instructions. The manual in the home is also very detailed. We would love to stay here again if ever back in Hawaii!

  • This was a great place to stay as I visited a friend in Honokaa. I could walk to downtown and had some great meals and even a movie at the People’s Theater. The space was clean and quiet and great WiFi. Well stocked kitchen and clean spacious bathrooms. Mai was super easy to work with. Would recommend.

    Laura2017-11-12T00:00:00Z
  • This stay had al we needed. Thanks to the refridgerator, toastmaker and coffee machine we could have breakfast in our room which was very practical! We only saw Mai once and she helped us out with a US adapter so we could charge our phones. She was very friendly and wanted to help where needed. She made us the suggestion to do a scenic drive and we definitely liked it so thanks Mai!

    Hannes2017-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • the place was as described; the location was nice, right next (15 min drive) to the beautiful Waipio Valley... only concern was the mattress, which isn't good for people with back issues...

    Thomas2017-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • Even though it's mentioned in the text, that you only have a shared bathroom, this should not be listed as entire apartment! We didn't come here to watch TV, but there should be one if mentioned in the description. Don't expect hangers (also mentioned). One of the windows could not be closed completely, therefore it was rather "windy" during the night. We asked for an additional blanket and were told that we should have brought one. We did not have any dishes in the fully equipped kitchenette, but took the ones from the shared kitchen. Beside those things, the uncle was really nice and friendly. The bathrooms were super clean and new!

    Thomas2017-11-21T00:00:00Z
  • We encountered some ants near the sink area, and some of the ants crawled into my cousin's suitcase when it was placed near the sink on the first night. We didn't place any food near the sink so we're unsure what caused this. Both of us also discovered that the area on the couch (towards the back, next to the wardrobe) smelled distinctly of urine. On the other hand, check in was very convenient and the space provided everything we needed. However the listing should be adjusted to reflect the shared nature of the restroom. Although there are two separate restrooms, it is still shared by both the studio and the 3-bedroom guests staying on the property.

  • Overall we enjoyed our stay at Mai's place. We had the Hawaiian house to ourselves. Since then, the configuration has been updated and the bathrooms and kitchen are shared. The wifi is weak outside of the kitchen, especially in the Hawaiian house unit. We suggest a wifi signal booster to help with that. The house is across the street from the fire department and they have an external PA system and could hear announcements at night. The entry to the house is a bit discouraging: the garage is littered with trash and uncovered. From the walkway, you see through the window what is typically in a basement: a collection of stored stuff. But the overall charm is restored once you get past this. Nice furniture in the main house living room. Great towels. Bathrooms have been recently retiled and are nice.

  • Wonderful, quaint and friendly - just what we’d expected from the Big Island! Mai made all the difference. Exceptional communication right from the start and helpful, genuine tips for local and community events for us to enjoy. Her space was lovely and we felt right at home. It worked wonderfully that we could come and go at our leisure and the location, although the island is very large, was perfect. Easy to navigate shops and restaurants in a small town and great accessibility to sightsee some of Big Island’s treasures. Although it may not be ideal for some, the shared bathroom and kitchen wasn’t an issue for us. We ate out as we explored other areas of the island and had long day excursions but the amenities were there if we’d needed them. Even though there were others on property, we felt comfortable and safe using the shared spaces and they were well maintained and clean. Mai’s Uncle was a great caretaker for the property and nice to have around. The family living there also helped us when we had questions. Super comfortable bed and a cozy sleeping environment with a light breeze and ceiling fans for added comfort. The unexpected sound of (what we assumed were frogs...?) lulled us to sleep each night. I’d highly recommend Mai’s place for the ultimate Big Island experience. Great if you’re looking for something with the convenience and friendliness of a small town with other larger surrounding areas to visit. A wonderful and ideal escape! MAHALO!

Located on the tropical Hamakua Coast in the historic town of Honokaa, this home has 2 decks with beautiful ocean view, beside a tropical gulch. It sleeps 6 with a Calif King Tempurpedic bed, a queen sofa sleeper & twin bamboo daybeds. The bamboo daybeds are good for children & short/average people. The home has 1.5 baths which include a spa tub & separate shower, free Wifi, Endless Wave pool and Koi pond. The kitchen is fully equipped with every thing you need to cook a meal. High speed Wifi.
“Luana Ola” in Hawai’ian means “To be at leisure, enjoying pleasant surroundings and good health”. Luana Ola VillaLuxury Home & Cottages are located on the tropical Hamakua Coast, near Waipio Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii. Imagine watching from your own private lanai (deck) a panoramic, unobstructed view of the ocean, embraced between a Terra Verdeʹ of Hawaii and a never boring, brilliant Big Sky. The ocean reflects the sky that is often shaped by the ocean. The showers are mostly gentle, warm and do not wear out their welcome. And when the trade winds bring a heavy rain, they reward you with a white water river running through the gulch guarding you on the left. The sound of thundering white waters passing you as you eat dinner, read, or lay in bed will make you wish for another strong storm to come by. The sky oscillates between azure colors the Mediterranean cannot have, the grey of passing clouds, and on a clear night you can be tempted to pretend you are grabbing a sparkling jewel from a pitch black heaven. Spend the whole day simply relaxing or visit nearby Waipio Valley, the Big Island’s Grand Canyon with an ocean starting at a black sand beach, or drive 25 minutes to the Akaka Falls, among the tallest cascading falls in North America. Hilo, the Capital, is 45 minutes south of us. Kona is 50 minutes away. Hapuna Beach, voted the best beach in the State of Hawai’i and one of the top 10 beaches in the U.S., is 40 minutes from us. The active part of the Mauna Loa Volcano (the red eye) is 1.5 hours away. Our location is completely sheltered from the active vents on the Island by the massive 14,000 feet Mauna Kea Mountain. The house it self is 3 stories high with the garage on the ground level. The first floor is all open with the kitchen and dining room on one level and the living room and deck down 3 steps. There is also a 1/2 bath and a storage room. The upstairs has the spa bath, shower, etc., the bedroom, a sun room, deck, laundry area and closet. Plus a small office area with desk and printer/copier which you are welcome to use to print your boarding passes. Both toilets have a bidet attachment for better personal hygiene. There is not a lot of privacy between the bedroom area and the sun room. Anyone sleeping on the bamboo day beds must past the master bed to get to the bathroom. The Endless Wave pool is behind the house. It is solar heater and can be used with or without the wave function. Available for your use are beach towels, 2 boogie boards, snorkel gear, a cooler and a small Smokey Joe BBQ. Hawaii taxes of 13.42% must be collected after you arrive. You can leave cash or check made out to Patricia El-Gasseir on the table when you leave or I can request money through Airbnb. Come visit us and enjoy the view.

  • Great location and view in honokaa town. House is huge with two large decks and the beautiful kitchen is fully stocked. The spa bath tub was a nice treat to come back to after a long day at he beach.

  • This house is huge and super luxurious. It's a great place to relax. The small town is within walking distance with a number of shops. The pool area needed to be cleaned however, and was surrounded by mosquitoes and spider webs. Finally, this was the only listing over three weeks in hawaii that asked for tax to be paid separately. I prefer it being built into the price to avoid confusion for guests paying in foreign currencies.

    Katharina2016-01-12T00:00:00Z

  • Absolutely amazing home. 4 kids on a budget in Hawaii and this was our "splurge". We never wanted to leave. Swam in the wave pool everyday. Cooked all our meals in the very spacious kitchen. Enjoyed the ocean views from the deck. So relaxing. I'd come back in a heartbeat.

Do not feed the fish or the feral cats. If the cottage feels damp because it has been raining a lot, there is a space heater that warms the place up nicely. Hawaii Transient Accommodations Tax (TAT) of 13.42% should be collected after your arrival/before you leave.
The cottage is on a small dead end road, usually quiet, but very close to town. You can walk up to town but it is a little hilly.
  • Our stay at the Blue Cottage was wonderful and refreshing. The views were amazing and there was a great wifi connection. We were very happy choosing this place.

  • Mohammed & Patricia's place was lovely. They are warm and welcoming hosts, Honokaa is a sweet little town, and their cottage is well stocked, comfortable, clean, private, and charming. The ocean view is amazing, and you are treated to gorgeous sunrises and sunsets daily. The market in town is also very well stocked and there are great restaurants too. You are also about an hour from Hilo and an hour from the west side's spectacular beaches, so it is a surprisingly good location. I stayed four nights and did not want to leave! Thank you Mohammed and Patricia!

  • Well equipped kitchen so it is easy to make your own meals there. Great view and quiet. This was my third time there and I'll go back again.

  • The BnB was well presented with an amazing ocean view. It was a very comfortable stay with everything necessary for a few nights. The town of honokaa was great too and very friendly. Mohammed and Patrick were both very nice to talk to and were able to give good advice on things to do on the island. Would highly recommend. Thank you.

  • We could not have asked for a more peaceful or well-equipped vacation rental on the Hamakua Coast. The Blue Cottage had everything we could have wanted - a well stocked kitchen, a great wifi connection, direct TV, a beautiful lanai, and a cute kitty who would welcome us back from our adventures. We would not hesitate to recommend the cottage to friends visiting the Big Island.

    Emily & Chad2016-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • We were warmly welcomed to this lovely cottage by Patricia as soon as we arrived. She and Mohamed made sure we had all we needed, and then we only saw them when we needed them for toiletries, and the small, short lived problem with the internet. They were the perfect hosts, accessible, but allowed us our privacy. This cottage has a magnificent view that the photos do not do justice. It is very comfortable, and fairly well stocked with cooking utensils. I loved having the toaster oven and rice cooker because we eat in quite a bit. The fresh vegetable market just up the street made it so easy to eat healthy. Patricia and Mohamed also said we could eat whatever was ripe on the property, so we ate avocado and oranges right off the tree!! There is even a coffee grinder for us purists ;-) I liked being nearly 1/2 way between Hilo and Kona. Each side of the Island has its attractions, and although we spent most of the time at the beaches on the Kona side, we loved our time in Hilo also. I have been to the Big Island many times and if I go back, I would definitely try to stay at this Tropical Cottage again.

  • Mohamed And Patricia's place was lovely. A wonderful location with great view of ocean. The studio is equipped with all the basics you need for cooking and very spacious and comfortable.

  • Our stay at Patricia's cottage was perfect in every way. The cottage was very well appointed--we found that there was everything needed for a family to have a comfortable stay including a spacious lanai with an incredible view. The surroundings were gorgeous with lots of fruit trees and it is in walking distance to the very cute main street of Honokaa.

Neighbors here are friendly but are not really close by
  • Hi Wayne and Shani, I really enjoyed the space. It was just what I needed. Relaxing and quiet and very homey. You have it neatly organized and it fit the needs of myself as a single travelling female very well. Interesting animals all around, too. And I particularly enjoyed taking a walk up the hill to the Forest Reserve and the hiking trails so close by. That was definitely a bonus and I recommend that to any visitors. Thanks!

  • Place was great for what we wanted. Be ready to wake up with the rooster and goats early, but this was irked for us as we were up and going hiking early both days.

    Andrew2016-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • The organisation was very uncomplicated, we booked very shortly in advance/ very spontaneously. The apartment was nice. The only bad thing was that because of the rain, geckos and unfortunately also some snails had an easy time to come in. People who love to cook should know that there is only one electrical stove, so it can only be cooked in one pot at a time.

    Lydia2015-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect spot, great communication. We were able to book this last minute and hassle free. Thank you Wayne

  • Sean was very nice and helpful during our stay. The property is small, but definitely sufficient for a couple. It feels almost like a motel room but is located adjacent to the host's house which is on a farm. The studio was clean, but not immaculate. There was a cockroach that made his way into the studio and hid in our luggage, but I guess this isn't too surprising given that it is located on a farm. Keep in mind the animals will wake you up nice and early (but the roosters and goats are so cute). We did not make use of the cooking equipment, which looked minimal, but did use the sink and fridge to prepare some snacks and fruit, and everything in the kitchen was clean. The property isn't right in Honokaa - it is a 10 minutes drive to town.

This house is adjacent to our Luana Ola Luxury Home & Cottages, see our reviews. Ocean view on one side & tropical gulch on the other. Light & airy 2 bedrooms, two bath in town, new master bath has whirlpool tub, near restaurants, shops, groceries and theater, sleeps 5, fully equiped kitchen, recently painted, new floors, new queen size bed, new small appliances, wireless internet, washer/dryer, BBQ in back yard, garage, perfect location between Hilo and Kona, close to Waipio Valley, no fog.
The pictures do not do justice to the beautiful ocean view. Sitting in the back yard with the BBQ and the ocean breeze blowing is heavenly. The bedrooms are small but the living/dining area is large, light and airy. The new master bath has a whirlpool tub. Both toilets have bidet attachments for better personal hygiene. No airconditioning or central heat but they are rarely needed. Each room has a ceiling fan and with the windows all open, the air circulation is great. The is a small portable heater if needed in the winter. With free wireless internet and the HD TV you can watch your Netflix, Amazon or other servces. The restaurant across serves delicious Asian fusion food. You can walk to the theater, shops farmers market and grocery store. Beach towels and small styrofoam cooler are available for your use.
Our house is in town, one block from the main street. The back entrance and parking lot of Aulani Cafe is across the street. A tropical gulch is on one side and a neighbor's house on the other side and the beautiful ocean view from the back yard. The Town of Honokaa has almost everything you might want. The Honokaa Peoples Theater beside showing movies has live music and cultural events.
  • Great place. Very neat. Mohamed was very kind and brought us some fresh fruit from the garden. A few shady people walking around Honokaa. Once you get used to the sound of the jungle by night it is a great place to stay. We would definitely recommend staying here. The house has everything you could wish for.

  • Lovely & cozy home in Honokaʻa. Great breeze that comes through the home. Patricia is great & speedy to communicate with.

  • We loved Honoka'a and the easy walking distance to it. Definitely off the beaten tourist path. Kind of a cooler/rainy climate yet the sunny/warmer Kona side beaches are not too far away. A great central location to visit the Hilo side while having easy access to Kona side as well. House served our family of 4 (kids 6 and 9) just great. We all loved the whirlpool tub! Definitely would consider staying again if we're ever in the area.

    Ted2017-12-16T00:00:00Z

  • The accommodations were perfect for my husband and his mom. Patricia was so easy to communicate with even after we made a change. She was very accommodating and responsive. My husband & his mom went to visit family that live close by. They were able to have them over and cook meals together. Really enjoyable! They will definitely be staying here again.

It worked well as a base for us as we went on daily explorations of not only Honokaa, nearby Waipio Valley and Laupahoehoe Point, but the beaches of Kohala as well.

This classic Hawaiian plantation house is well maintained and exhibits the vintage charm of old Hawaii with an ocean view. The house is surrounded on all four sides by tropical vegetation including a coconut tree, which welcomes you at the front of the house. A two minute walk takes you to quaint Honokaa town for gift shops, grocery stores or to see a movie at the local theatre. You may cook at home or eat out - Italian fine dining, Asian fusion, Grandmas kitchen, an all vegetarian cafe etc.
This is a great room for couples or a single person exploring the island. This room has a closet a dresser, night stands, and a view of the ocean. There is also plenty of light and a ceiling fan for warmer days. We have a second room available, in case you are traveling with other guests or family members. See other listing "Hibiscus Walk to town- II."
We are 7 miles from Waipio Valley, with a two-minute walk into town—a convenient location to grab a bite in town or go to the market.
  • The Hibiscus House is a local charm in one of the best places to stay on the Hamakua coast, just a few miles to Waipio, close to the sunny beaches of the Kohala coast, and just a short drive to visit historic Hilo town, wonderful host and located within walking distance to down town Honokaa, We would stay there again!

  • I loved my stay at Anne's place. I was on the big island for a week and I enjoyed coming back to Honokaa every night. The home is clean and comfortable and I had access to everything I needed during my stay. The frogs would sing me to sleep every night and I slept great. When I shared with them that it was my Birthday, they burst into song! May you be so lucky as to spend your birthday in Anne's home. If I make it back to the big island, I would absolutely stay there again.

    Lorraine2017-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • This is a wonderful share situation with kind, generous & respectful hosts. Location was absolutely perfect for our needs and we truly couldn't have had a better experience. Anne and Ravi make me want to be a better host.

    Morgan2017-09-12T00:00:00Z

    Sarah2017-08-01T00:00:00Z
  • My stay at Anne's Airbnb could not have been better. I arrived and was greeted with a delicious home cooked meal of Indian lentils. I did not meet Anne as she was away traveling, but I met her partner Ravi who is truly an amazing individual. The house was very comfortable, and I had everything I needed during my stay. The room I rented and bathroom were very clean. Neighborhood was very quiet. I was walking distance to the town of Honokaa. I highly recommend renting from Anne and Ravi.

    Amber2017-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • Anne and Ravi's house is so charming and nice! Even though they've only recently moved there, they've made it feel comfortable, homey, and clean already. The bedroom was clean and neat and the comfortable bed was just what we needed every night after long days exploring the big island. We loved the location in Honoka'a--close to Waipio Valley and Waimea, but with easy access to Hilo and not unreasonably far from Volcanoes NP. The shared bathroom is really nice too! Anne made it super easy for us to check in and out even though our timing didn't really coincide with hers--she let us know how to get in and always let us park in their driveway so we weren't boxed in when we were leaving early in the mornings. Anne and Ravi also had a plethora of magazines and travel books etc for us to look over for any adventures we might be interested in. There are lots of little frogs that vocalize all night around the house, but Anne provided us with ear plugs (though we didn't use them because it didn't really bother us). I have AT&T cell service and didn't have reception at Anne's house, but they have great fast wifi so it was really an issue. Definitely recommend staying with Anne and Ravi!

    Molly2017-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our week at Anne’s place. Honokaa is a great jumping off point to explore the northern part of the island from and the house itself is a rarity in Hawaii in that it is walking distance to a grocery store! We ended up getting more than we paid for because our hosts were out of town and we had the house to ourselves, but even without Anne nearby she made herself extremely accessible to us and made us feel very welcome. A lovely spot!

This classic Hawaiian plantation home has three bedrooms. The room that is available in this listing has a lovely view of a lush native hibiscus bush that flowers all year. The room has lots of light. Enjoy being close to the historical town of Honokaa. You can walk to town, visit Grandma's for breakfast, see a movie in the quaint People's Theater. We are also seven miles away from Waipio valley, making this a convenient place to stay while you organize your day trip into the beautiful valley.
We share the kitchen with our guests and even share a cup of tea when we are around. A communal shelf provides the basics for cooking, salt, pepper, items left behind by previous guests, etc. There is a nice porch and a yard with lots of lawn space for relaxing, reading a book, or just wandering around to enjoy the tropical plants that surround us. This is a tropical oasis with the convenience of walking to town. Please see our other listing of a second room available in the same house.
Our neighborhood is quiet (except for the roosters). My favorite thing to do is to walk to the local movie theater and watch one of the two latest releases that they feature. The il Mondo Italian restaurant down the street serves an excellent pizza pie and the shops offer some great gift ideas. We live in on a small street, so its a pretty quiet place to spend the day.
  • The home was clean, comfortable, well located in Honokaa, and friendly welcome. Only hic: I first rented for one person then a friend added to my trip. So I wished to change and rent for two in order to save, but we were told that we could not change ...

Very peace n several lovely shops n restaurants(there are Cristal shop n organic shpo vegetalian restaurant too) even though small town. I don't drive n I stayed alone. Buses runs just few times a day. However., this host couple helped me a lot. They helped me many way like took me to nice places n share me foods n their idea n helped to book airplane tickets etc. as possible as the can do for me. Their hear are opend n big. We had same truth n connected soon. Their hospitality was wonderful!! I didn't feel lonely n uncomfortable. I felt I was staying at my friend's home. Thank you Anne n Rabi for your wonderful hospitality.
