A beautiful 3 bedroom cottage in one acre of garden situated in a National Scenic Area of Scotland with stunning views of Auchencairn Bay to the Solway Firth. The Thrums is a comfortable cottage ideally suited to families.
The cottage is fully furnished and on one level. It consists of a fitted kitchen with walk through to dining/sitting room, utility room, master bedroom with 5' bed with en suite wet room, double bedroom with 4'6" bed and 3' single bed, twin bedroom with 3' beds, family bathroom with shower over bath and WC. Appliances: Oil central heating, wood-burning stove, electric hob and oven, microwave, larder fridge, separate freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, and tumble dryer. Extra features: Unlimited Wifi internet access (usually reliable but not guaranteed). Landline, telephone calls to UK. Digital TV, DVD and CD player. Cot and high chair available on request. Solid oak floors throughout the house. Large enclosed garden, garden furniture, paved seating area in front of the house. BBQ in woodshed. A small stream runs at the side of the garden, partitioned off by a fence with a gate.
Often overlooked by visitors to Scotland in favour of the Highlands, the area has been described as 'Scotland in miniature'. The southern Solway Coast of Scotland has many miles of coastal cliffs, scenic estuaries and secluded beaches, while the Galloway Forest Park is within easy road access, offering 400 sq mls of open moorland, rugged mountains and enchanting lochs. The region has a fascinating history and contains historic buildings of national importance including Culzean, Caerlaverock and Drumlanrig Castles. The cottage is the perfect location for outdoor activities: there are many miles of quiet country roads for cycling, off-road routes for mountain-bikers, a wide range of walks, horse riding, water sports, fishing and golf. Wildlife enthusiasts are particularly encouraged. Because of the varied range of habitats, the region has an exceptional biodiversity including Red Squirrel, Red Deer, Otter, Pine Marten, Black Grouse, Puffin, Gannet, Osprey, Hen Harrier and even two resident pairs of Golden Eagle (40 species alone have been recorded in the Thrums garden). Just half a mile from the sea, the cottage is a 30 minute walk to the secluded beach of the Red Haven and at low tide one can explore Heston island. With only fields and woods directly behind the house, one can find one's way by path or open moorland onto the summit of Bengairn (1283 ft) to get glorious views of the wonderful Galloway countryside. One of the most picturesque villages in South West Scotland, Auchencairn is a miles walk away and has a Post Office Shop. The village is situated equi-distant between Castle Douglas and the "Artist's Town" of Kirkcudbright, hence shopping for groceries or gifts is only a 25 minute drive. Some significant events in the area include: Stranraer Show Spring Fling Arts Festival Dumfries and Galloway Agricultural show The Galloway County Fair The Wigtown Show Kirkcudbright Tattoo
  • This cottage was in a handy quiet location with views of the sea from the living room. Walks were accessible without taking a car out and we enjoyed walking to the local beach. Several castles and national trust places were within easy drives and there is plenty to do in the area. The property is very clean and cosy with a great stove fire in the living room. The beds were comfy and the bathrooms were modern. An enjoyable stay all round!

  • Extremely well-equipped cottage, wonderful garden & patio area & idyllic surroundings. Plenty to see & do when we weren't spending time BBQ-ing & playing with our kids in the garden. A family-friendly & extremely comfortable space which we loved inhabiting.

  • We had a lovely week at The Thrums. Great location near lots of local places of interest for all ages, info helpfully provided by Asya. The accommodation was delightful and extremely well-equipped with a very thoughtful welcome pack of essentials. Comfy beds, lots of storage for our stuff, well-kept gardens full of wildlife. Spotlessly cleaned by the housekeeper Donna, who was exceptionally helpful when we had an issue with the heating which was dealt with as quickly as possible, despite it being a bank holiday weekend. We were provided with extra heaters and we lit a lovely fire in the log burner to tide us over until it was resolved and the house was warm and cosy once more. The owner Asya was incredibly helpful, responsive and communicative, an A* host. Thank you for a lovely stay.

    Helen2018-04-07T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying here. The view is amazing, and the area is great and lovely places within easy reach. The cottage is lovely and really well equipped, and Donna was on hand if we needed anything. I would recommend to anyone, with or without a family. We took our 3 and 6 year olds and they loved it!

Backs on to acres of farmland with tidal river. Wildlife friendly environment. Outdoor flushing toilet. Wood burner, cold water sink, electric hob, toaster, kettle, cutlery, crockery. Will need own bedding/sleeping bag. Dog friendly. Double bed, single over bunk, childs bed available.
Open countryside, hiking trails and rambling paths nearby, close to Kippford and Rockcliffe, nearby cafe with all-day breakfasts.
  • Good friendly hosts. Very quiet place yet very well located for Kippford/Rockcliffe/Dalbeattie/Colvend etc. Accommodation exactly as described. Basic but clean and good value. Good for dogs - although on a farm there are no livestock around and some nice walks from the front door. If you are looking for a budget stress free place then I recommend it. I will be going back.

    Dalbeattie, Regno Unito

Dalbeattie is a small town in South West Scotland close to the coast. There are numerous attractive beaches only a short drive away, including the popular sailing village of Kippford. It is on the edge of Dalbeattie Forest and not far from Mabie Forest, both part of the Seven Stanes and very popular for mountain biking. There is a park across the road, very popular with locals and visitors. Dalbeattie is 14 miles west of Dumfries and 6 miles from Castle Douglas.
Newly refurbished 2 bedroomed traditional granite terraced cottage in small town near to the Solway Coast. Garden to rear with outdoor seating areas on the grass and terrace. Double bedroom on ground floor, twin room upstairs with extra pull out bed if required.
The cottage is situated in a fairly quiet neighbourhood, although is on the main road into Dumfries and can be fairly busy (for a small rural town!) just after 5pm. The park is immediately across from the cottage and is very popular with children and adults. There is a duck pond, putting, tennis courts, play equipment and plenty of space to kick a ball. In the summer there are activities held here. Dalbeattie is on the edge of the town wood which is popular with walkers, orienteering and mountain biking. Kippford, Rockcliffe, Sandyhills, Southerness and other small hamlets along the Solway Coast are a short drive and on a clear day the views across to the Northern Lakes are spectacular.
  • Beautiful garden area with outdoor seating makes for a relaxing time in summer. Stunningly beautiful Galloway area. Flat was clean and comfortable and across the street from a pretty park for walks and play.

  • We loved the sunny garden and convenience of this house. Judith was so welcoming and helpful. The house was clean and well equipped and opposite a large park and close to all the conveniences. The best thing was taking the bikes from the house into the woods and down to the amazing coast. Such great value!

  • Great stay, lovely host

    Chris2017-09-17T00:00:00Z
  • Judith's place worked brilliantly for us over a long weekend, with a warm welcome on arrival. The cottage was quaint, with a great feel and a pretty garden which we enjoyed in the lovely weather. We had everything we needed ... parking was easy, people friendly and the park across the road was a bonus. Dalbeattie is an excellent base for exploring beautiful Dumfries and Galloway. We hope to return soon.

  • Cosy, clean and good value place to stay. Excellent communication from Judith and also Doreen and Ernie who let us in (even when we were later than expected) and were also very helpful. Judith's ideas of local places to visit were great - we had some fab walks on the beaches and forests suggested.

    Caroline2017-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • Judith's home is lovely and clean. It's perfectly located in Dalbeattie with shops nearby and a beautiful park just across the road. It's easy to reach Dumfries, the coast and beautiful countryside and beaches. Definitely visit the beaches! Judith is a perfect host, and was very accommodating to our family. We can't recommend a stay at her place enough- we'll definitely return!

2 Ford View is one of a pair of fishermen’s cottages, sitting on the side of the Urr Estuary, at Kippford, on Scotland Riviera on the lovely Solway Coast. You can watch the Heron’s fishing in the water below, the occasional otter crossing the estuary and there are red squirrels who visit the gardens here, a bit of a wildlife sanctuary.
  • The spacious cottage is a beautiful base for a visit to Dumfries and Galloway. The house is stylish and well-presented, with beautiful decorative touches and quality furnishings that make the cottage feel like a home away from home. The cottage is bright, fresh and sparkling clean, and is well-equipped with everything you need for self-catering. The extensive garden and the cottage's closeness to the water provide the perfect space for peaceful relaxation. The week flew by; I wish I could have stopped for longer.

Susie gave lots of information about the local area. It felt like she really wanted us to have the best time and nothing was too much trouble for her. The house is set in beautiful grounds with a lovely little burn running through the garden. Breakfasts are superb - best scrambled eggs ever! We really loved our stay at Stag Wood and hope to revisit. Thanks so much Susie and Blyth.

  • A lovely clean house in a great location, surrounded by nature. Turn left out of the drive and you have woodland walks, turn right and right again and you have beach walks, the dog loved it! Susie and Blythe are extremely friendly, informative and accommodating hosts, plus the Scottish breakfast is like something you would receive in a five star hotel. We have a lovely Easter weekend, thanks for having us!

  • Nestled between Dalbeattie & Kippford is the lovely Stag Wood. The surroundings were breathtaking. Hosts were fantastic. Susie let us check in early as we had plans for the day. We were shown round the whole house and made to feel like it was our own home. The bedroom was warm and cosy. It makes all the difference to get a peaceful nights sleep. Their two dogs were full of fun and didn’t mind us being there at all. Breakfast was provided - with plenty of choice. Fully cooked breakfast, cereal, fresh fruit from Perthshire, home baked bread, yoghurt, fresh orange juice, tea, coffee... the list goes on! The hosts were great company and attended to our every need.

  • Nice cottage where we stayed with 4 adults and 2 kids in the thre bedrooms. Good communication with Ronnie. It was great that the cottage was available prior to stated check in and that we could book it from a Thursday onwards. Three bedrooms with comfortable beds. Kitchen with everything we needed. Dining area in kitchen is small but the kitchen is nicely renovated as is the bathroom. The living rooom has an open fire place and has a bit of a smokey smell. Nice dining area outside in the little garden. WIFI worked fine once we switched it off for a minute on the power socket. The water is visible from a little elevated platform in the garden. Kippford is a lovely small fishing village. Lovely walk to Rockcliffe, which has a nice beach. Kirkcudbright is a beautiful village with numerous galleries and lovely cafes and restaurants. We enjoyed our stay even with the mixed bag of weather. We would recommend the cottage!

  • Excellent. Even better than expected. Very comfortable for us and three 16 to 20 year olds. Great views. Best bit is the very quick access to the mountain bike trails in Dalbeattie forest. Great garden too. We had a fantastic holiday.

    Chris2017-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • Five us (plus our dog) enjoyed a lovely 3-day break at Hazelmount. The house had everything we needed for a comfortable, warm and cosy stay. The garden was a delight - we just wish we could have stayed longer and spent more time on the viewing balcony with gorgeous views over the estuary. Kippford is a beautiful village and the surrounding coastline is great fun to explore. Plenty of good local eateries too! Would love to return...

    Liz2016-04-20T00:00:00Z
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and were delighted to be able to see glimpses of the estuary from the upstairs windows. We had mixed weather and were grateful for the open fire on the cold rainy days and loved what we called 'The Lookout' - a small, raised platform with views of the yachts at the yacht club - at sunny times. Thank you!

    Cathy2017-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely home in a beautiful location. We thoroughly enjoyed staying in Ronnie’s home and look forward to returning next year, when we can take full advantage of your beautiful garden. Early check in was very much appreciated. Thank you

    Lorna2018-01-22T00:00:00Z
  • We had a really enjoyable stay at Hazelmount, perfect for what we needed. There were nice wee touches to make our trip even more enjoyable like games & dvds, handsoap and clingfilm, stuff you forget when self catering. The bedrooms were really comfy and spacious and the curtains were brilliant at blocking out the early morning light, really important with a 5 year old! The garden was a real bonus too, fairly sheltered so were able to eat outside even though the weather wasn't great. Would definitely consider going back.

The cottage is close to the sea, the beach and lovely Scottish towns and villages. Great scenery and fantastic walks. You will fall in love with it. You’ll love the cottage because of the spaciousness, size and airiness. It may be in the heart of the country but it has all mod cons, it's quirky and different yet wonderfully comfortable and cosy with wood burning stoves in two rooms . You might want to book the Bothy as well if you are four couples but it is listed separately so have a look.
The dining, kitchen and main living area are all open plan and flooded with light. There is a huge wood burning stove in the living area but the central heating is efficient and the house is always warm and cosy. Because this is a home not a holiday rental it has everything you need for cooking and relaxing. Lovely crockery, cutlery, all cooking utensils, great cookery books. The shelves are also full of all sorts of useful herbs and cooking things. Feel free to use them.. if you finish anything then just replace it. I won't be at all precious about that sort of thing. There are lots of books and DVD's to watch in the television room. There is also projector so you can turn the living room into a sort of private cinema (just carefully take down the painting!) but please ask if you want to use that. The beds and mattresses are all brand new and super comfy. The bed linen is Egyptian 400 thread cotton and glorious to sleep in. You will be provided with towels as well. There is a washing machine and tumble drier, hair drier, nespresso coffee machine and frother for cappuccino. There are also Bose speakers if you have Spotify or your own music. There is of course wifi and sky - you will be told where to locate the access info. There are two bathrooms - one on the first floor and one on the ground floor. The first floor one has a bath the ground floor one a very good hot shower. There is a lovely garden with garden furniture and a hammock near the stream under the trees. There is a gas bottle barbecue in the shed if you want to use that. And two bikes if you'd like to use them. There is no fencing round the stream so it is your responsibility to keep children and dogs from going there. The garden is dog safe - unless your's is the type who would jump into the stream and run away or wriggle under the gate!
The countryside is the best thing about Auchencairn. You can walk out the front door and within minutes be in the bay looking out to sea. Just cross the road, go though the gate into the little community garden then through the football field alongside the river through the gate and follow the Hugh Paton signs. There is a bird hide overlooking the bay. Will leave notes for lovely walks. Castle Douglas is a twelve minute drive away .. a bustling little town. Great butchers, Tesco for all your basics. A FANTASTIC new artisan bakers - Earths Crust. Go for coffee, lunch afternoon tea and shopping to Designs in the High Street. Just potter about. Loch Arthur is another great place to go for lunch and a wee shop. Also just discovered the Steamboat at Carse something or other .. worth a visit but you would have to book. The Anchor at Kippford is great on a balmy summers night. Kirkcudbright is the "Artists Town" and worth a day trip. Then there is Threave Gardens and many other gardens to visit if that is your interest. If you have children there are great walks and beaches to visit plus Cream O Galloway ice cream makers. If you are a cyclist there are many different places to go cycling. Endless fantastic walks - there are books in the house. There are not a huge number
  • Beautifully appointed house in lovely location, very nicely furnished with comfy beds and everything you could wish for in the kitchen. Lying in the hammock by the stream, all your cares will wash away from you!

  • The house is wonderfully modern and flows. We felt warm and comfortable the whole time. The area is very seculded so sitting by the creak with some wine and dip was picturesque. Had a really lovely time :)

  • The name 'cottage' understates the spaciousness of this property. It is light and bright and decorated to a very high standard. The finishing touches are well thought out. The garden was enclosed and safe for our dog and we loved the hammock! It is well placed for visiting historical sites and enjoying the walks and scenery of the area. We would highly recommend this house to families and groups of friends alike.

  • Sue's place is super comfortable, clean, and very well appointed. Sue was immediately available to answer any questions we had before and during our stay. The location is excellent for exploring the area and for bicycling. Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright are easily accessible. We had a top notch experience here and would highly recommend this place.

  • Tolle Unterkunft mit spitzen Ausstattung. Alles ganz unkompliziert und wenn man doch mal eine frage hatte wurde die direkt beantwortet.

  • If you believe in fairies, I think the best chance of finding them would be beside the wee stream that runs through the garden of Bridge End Cottage in Auchencairn. The garden is magical, I could have spend many hours listening to the different sounds of wildlife and watching the butterflies flit from pretty flower to flower. The brilliant white cottage is beautiful, it is clear that Sue has a creative flair. The kitchen would encourage even the most uninspired to participate. I loved the open plan and the fact you could still invite the garden to join you for dinner by opening the double french doors. The garden was completely safe and our two miniature schnauzers had the best fun ever! Inside the cottage the bedrooms are wonderfully comfortable, a big thank you to Yoga Sue for making the whole cottage sparkly clean, we had a ball. So the area, - if you like romance, beautiful scenery an abundance of castles, walking the hind legs of you and a donkey I will say no more! This is a beautiful, beautiful part of the world we will come back

  • Had a wonderful few days in this beautiful house in Dumfriesshire. The coastal walks in this area are stunning and it is perfect for a weekend break from London (easily accessible from the West Coast Main Line). The house itself is done up beautifully and very welcoming. Sue was really helpful/accommodating and made us feel completely at home. Particularly loved the open plan kitchen / dining room area and the snug for watching a film when it is pouring down outside. Would absolutely come again!

This part of Galloway is particularly fortunate and varied in the beautiful countryside and coastal richness on its doorstep. My house is well placed to take advantage of all this while also enjoying the convenience of town facilities .The beautiful Colvend coast is only three miles away with pretty coastal villages like Kippford and Rockcliffe to enjoy watersports , golf , fishing, lovely beaches , magnificent clifftop coastal walks, riverside pubs and teashops. Less than half an hour’s drive to interesting old towns like Kirkcudbright , Gatehouse of Fleet , Castle Douglas to explore art galleries , castles , abbeys , beautiful walks , birdwatching , sailing , riding , archery. World class mountain-biking only 400m away at Dalbeattie Forest with other 7 Stanes centres of Mabie and Kirroughtree closeby. Superb road cycling on quiet country roads.
  • We spent two weeks at Malcolm's - plenty of room for our family of five and wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. The house had everything we needed including super comfy beds and a fast cycle on the washing machine!! It was bigger than we expected, all new appliances and lots of natural light. Malcolm was a brilliant host; excellent communication, very helpful and and organised. Thank you for sharing your lovely home!

  • Really enjoyed our stay at this cozy clean comfortable house. Well equipped and spacious . Nice peaceful location yet so handy for town and so close to forest too. Really good value. Malcolm excellent host. Great communication , very helpful. Has left house manual with loads of info about best walks, beaches , bike trails , pubs , things to do. He really helped us make the most of our trip. We'll definitely come back in the summer to do more and enjoy relaxing in the nice garden !

  • A very spacious bungalow and well appointed. Spotlessly clean. Lovely and warm. Décor is very 70's. Kitchen equipment was adequate although we ate out mostly. The folder for guests was very helpful, with details of places to eat. It is a quiet, peaceful location, despite a main road being quite close. The garden is sizeable with lots of wild birds.

    Jaquie2018-04-16T00:00:00Z
  • Thanks for the great stay Malcolm, Really clean neat and tidy & cozy bungalow. The ability to check in later was brilliant too. Couldn't want for anything more... Thanks.

  • Malcolm's house was very clean and in a great location for exploring Dumfries and Galloway. It's not a country cottage but a practical house that is great value for money.

  • The kids, my partner & I found Malcolm’s place to be a great spot to centre’s ourselves & explore the Galloway area. His house was a comfortable, warm & clean base for a trip with toddlers & his communication was prompt & very helpful. I would recommend Malcolm’s house to anyone visiting this beautiful part of Scotland. Thanks Malcolm

  • Badgers Wood is a lovely place to stay, nice and quiet area but only a short walk to the high street and the woods and a short drive to the beach. The bungalow itself is spacious, clean and roomy, Malcolm is quick to respond to any queries and provides lots of information on local amenities and places of interest. Would definitely recommend.

    Fiona2018-06-01T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at Badger Wood! Malcolm was an excellent host and both the bungalow and his hospitality lived up to our expectations based on the previous reviews. We are a family of 4 with 2 young children (age 3 and 6) and the bungalow served as a perfect base for us to explore the area. Malcolm had even put up the travel cot ready for our arrival which was greatly appreciated after our long journey. The bungalow may not be the most modern in terms of decor (and for me this was a bonus as it immediately felt very homely and had a very nostalgic feel to it, reminding me of my grandparents home as a child!) but it had everything we needed and was exceptionally clean and well equipped. We loved exploring nearby Dalbeattie Forest where our girls had a great time in the adventure play area and searching for the golden hedgehogs! We also visited Rockliffe beach, Sandyhills and Kirkcudbright which we'd also recommend for fun day trips out. We would highly recommend Badger Wood and hope to be back again in future. Thanks Malcolm!

The Bothy lies at the back of Bridgend Cottage. It's a truly magical, unspoilt and unknown corner of Scotland. Close to the sea and surrounded by wonderful countryside. The Bothy's quite a surprise - a modern studio with all mod cons - a great living/dining area, wood burning stove, high ceilings. Fully kitted kitchen and large shower room. Double bed on the mezzanine. The Bothy's great for couples and solo adventurers. It's completely self contained with access at the back of Bridgend Cottage.
The Bothy is a real surprise. Attached to Bridgend Cottage it is totally self contained. A large funky space with everyone you would need for a few days holiday. The Bothy could be rented out at the same time as Bridgend Cottage with the two houses providing accommodation for up to four or five couples. But because its self contained it can be rented out separately too.
The village is lovely. There is now a shop that is open till 1pm. If you are staying there for a week you can order a paper to be delivered for you to collect each day. There are very basic provisions there but would suggest you do your shopping in Castle Douglas where there are lots of really good shops.. Earth's Crust Bakery is wonderful. Loch Arthur in Beeswing is also worth a visit. Designs has a lovely coffee shop.
  • The Bothy was fabulous ! Stylish, comfortable, well equipped and in a great location. Sue our host made us feel very welcome and we would not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone..... that's if we've not booked it again first !!

  • Sues place was brilliant. Plenty of amemities for our stay. The garden is exceptional and we enjoyed 2 bbqs during this heatwave! The shower is brilliant and then kitchen is well equipped. The living room was very plesant especially with the Dyson fan working its socks off. The bed does have very low ceilings above so beware! Exceptionally comfy. A great stay and would recommend.

  • Elizabeth is really nice, helpful and open person. My colleagues, who stayed at her home enjoyed it. She even prepared breakfast, what was really great, even though it was for extra fee. Hope we will come back! I really do recommend Elizabeth as a host, and her house for a holiday stay, and even business. Thank you for everything! :)

    Kitt2018-07-25T00:00:00Z

  • Elizabeth was a great host. Communication was excellent and she left us with basics like milk and bread. She also made us a cake and bought a very thoughtful card as we were there for a family celebration. Beds comfy and both bathrooms had shampoo, shower gel and plenty of toilet rolls. Bathroom on each floor so handy for all bedrooms - 2 on ground floor, 3 on first floor. House was spacious with decent area outside to enjoy the sunshine. House is dog friendly so only down side was smell of dog in living area. Would be fine if you had dogs though. House is in great location in nice town with shop, pubs, play park all within easy walking distance.

    Lisa2018-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • You have to see it to believe it. Exceeded our expectations. The hosts went above and beyond for our group, informing us about the area, and opening an incredible, historic home for group use. Stay here.

Loved this property, would recommend it.

A much-loved family holiday house with a relaxed atmosphere and vintage Seventies decor on the beautiful and unspoilt Solway coast. It's not 5* luxury and the decor in some of the bedrooms is in need of updating, but there is lots of space, a big (but unfenced) garden and views of Screel and the Urr estuary from the terrace. Brilliant for family get-togethers or groups of friends - and well-behaved dogs welcome too. Golf, 7Stanes cycling, sailing and coastal walks all nearby.
Unfortunately, due to the number of steps, the house isn't suitable for people with limited mobility. The kitchen has all the equipment you need to feed big groups, and the table extends so that you can seat 12 easily, but you can be just as cosy with smaller groups if you shut off the bedrooms downstairs.
Kippford is a popular sailing village with two pubs and a great little Par 3 golf course. The Dalbeattie 7Stanes mountain biking trail is nearby, as are plenty of other golf courses, and there are lots of wonderful coastal walks from the door. The beach at Rockcliffe is great for small children, and there is plenty to appeal to art and history lovers in the area too.
  • BV is very special house! The photos don't do it justice. A stylish antidote to the modern world and so much space. The perfect house for hide and seek and reading by the fire when the Scottish weather kept us all indoors. Board games and well stocked kitchen much appreciated. Location itself is great too, with lovely walks straight from the house. Thanks very much for sharing BV with us Pamela and your helpful local tips and flexibility on check in/ out times. Hoping to be back next year!

  • Bells View is the best holiday home we've ever stayed in. Our host was incredibly helpful and made sure our stay was comfortable and cosy, she even put up a Christmas tree and fairy lights as we were staying over Christmas and Boxing Day. The house is enormous and easily accommodated our group of 8. The interior design is completely unique and fabulous! It really felt like a home from home and we were sad to leave on the last day. This is the perfect party house for a small group looking for something a bit different! The kitchen is incredibly well equipped with kitchen utensils and appliances - we really couldn't have asked for more. We highly recommend BV and hope to visit again soon. 5 stars aren't enough!

  • BV is in a stunning location, scenic and a short walk to the village. The Anchor pub on the main street has great real ale, pub food and atmosphere. The walks in the woods were fantastic for our dogs and the whole family. The fire was a lovely warm centre for family games in the living room. Warm and cosy bedrooms too! I would recommend for large family get togethers. Thank you Pamela for great communication, directions and information .

Beautifully appointed, the Lady Maxwell Room at Buittle Castle offers the experience of staying in a working, privately owned Scottish Castle. The room is on the ground floor, with its own private access to the courtyard (with one step) and its own ensuite bathroom with shower. Full Scottish or Continental Breakfast is included, and is served in the Library (also on the ground floor). We aim to offer the guests a true 'country house' experience.
The site which the present Tower occupies was once the Inner Bailey of the Medieval Buittle Castle, one of Scotland's Royal Castles and twice Capital of Scotland. Buittle was home to Lady Devorgilla of Galloway and the Bailliol Dynasty, and later a Jacobite stronghold of the Gordon and Maxwell families, who re-constructed the original c.13th Century Keep into the present L-Plan tower, c.1500. Buittle Castle, unlike many such buildings remains very much a working building, and so retains the 'feel' that these buildings had when first built, surrounded by formal gardens, livestock, vegetable growing and pleasure grounds. It is currently home to James, the 24th Great Grandson of Lady Devorguilla, and his cousin Tobias, who have re-acquired the Castle after roughly 60 years of it being out of family ownership. The site is also home to a working Printing Office specialising in craft letterpress printing and bookbinding, and a medieval chapel, with an interesting Jacobite history, in which services are regularly celebrated in the pre-reformation Use of Sarum.
Buittle Castle is nestled in a picturesque valley, surrounded by ancient woodland on one side and the River Urr on the other. Buittle is conveniently located for Dalbeattie, the food town of Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright, the Colvend Coast and the 7 Stanes biking trails.
  • This place is special. The room, the location, the tour of the house, the printing studio, the dogs, the fabulous turkey, the chapel, music at the piano...oh and the breakfasts - wow! Especially fun was discovering the history of local castles and seeing how their histories linked to that of Buittle Castle. We loved staying here and look forward to seeing how Buittle develops over the coming months/years.

  • Wow! I want to write an effusive review full of superlatives because that’s what our stay here deserves. But I have a limited number of characters! So, in a nutshell.... We had three fabulous hosts - warm, helpful, friendly and incredibly interesting - with beautiful taste and high standards. Please do take the opportunity to look around the castle as it’s fascinating in so many ways. We spent the rest of the afternoon researching all sorts of things as a result. Our room was wonderful, with private access, a cosy bed, fabulous toiletries and good WiFi. The paintings and documents on the wall were more food for thought. We had the perfectly cooked and generous full Scottish breakfast in one of the most thought provoking libraries I have ever been in. My only regret is that I didn’t think to book dinner in advance. If you can, then do! The dining room will be an experience in its own right. A very memorable stay indeed.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Buittle castle! It was unlike any other Airbnb experience we have had and would definitely recommend Buittle as a base for exploring the gorgeous Dumfries and Galloway countryside. Tobias, James, and Joshua were so welcoming, and on arrival we were firstly introduced to their pet turkey and then shown around the chapel and the vaulted medieval dining room. We then had a cup of tea in the orchard and were able to soak in the atmosphere of Buittle castle. On arriving home after dinner we then shared a glass of champagne with Tobias, James, and Joshua which was a lovely touch, and Tobias and James shared with us some stories behind the castle which was really interesting. During our stay we felt totally taken care of, and we came away feeling like we had had the 'true country house experience'. Special thanks to Joshua. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because we were woken at 4am by the two peacocks which live in the castle grounds and we weren't able to fully appreciate the peace and tranquillity that we would have expected living off the beaten track. On saying that, I would still totally recommend this Airbnb.

Innis Broc (Badgers' Meadow) is set within 36 acres of Parkland with other log cabins in Dumfries and Galloway and is approximately 500 yards from the unspoilt beach at Sandyhills Bay. The lodge has been furnished to a high standard and is the perfect place for a relaxing weekend or a base to explore the natural beauty of South West Scotland. Innis Broc is good for couples, families (with kids), and furry friends (pets). On site is a dog friendly bar and restaurant (4* trip advisor review)
The accommodation is all at ground floor level and consists of a large open plan lounge/dining area with access to a fully fitted kitchen. There is a central hallway leading to three bedrooms and a family bathroom with a shower over the bath. Two of the bedrooms have double beds and the other has two single beds. There is an attached locked store shed for items such as bikes, golf clubs etc. There is parking for three cars around the bungalow.
This corner of Scotland has become known as the secret coast with its amazing scenery and stunning cliff top walks. Nature lovers will appreciate the variety of wild life such as deer, badgers, red squirrels, red kites, and buzzards along with many other species that can be seen from the lodge. It really is a unique place with beauty that changes with every season. Activities close by include:- - Sandyhills Beach - Around a 5 minute walk down the road is the picturesque beach of Sandyhills where you can explore the natural caves & rock pools, embark on a coastal cliff walk, paddle in the surf or just build sand castles! There are also public toilets, a small shop (open seasonally), a payphone, a post-box and a bus stop. - Free carp fishing in loch across the road (catch and release). - Bainloch Deer Park situated right next to the site entrance. Groups of between 1 and 10 people can be taken on an hour long 4x4 tour of the park to spot the Red, Roe, Fallow & Sika deer as well as a small herd of Feral Goats. - Colvend Golf Club - Across the road is a superb 18 hole hillside and parkland golf course dubbed 'Scotland's Friendliest Club' and the clubhouse is just over ½ mile from the lodge. There is a local Spar convenience store at Colvend (5 minutes by car) but it is not open late.
  • A home from home in the countryside. Perfectly located in a secluded spot on the edge of this site, with access to the bar & restaurant if required. A short stroll to the beach and with public transport links to local towns the lodge provides an idea base for exploring this beautiful area. Pamela has thought of everything to make your stay most enjoyable, from the comfortable beds and well equipped little kitchen to the books and games, for those not content with tv and dvd's, and a wealth of information about getting the best from your surroundings. The lodge was warm and cosy when we arrived with everything to hand, and more. Highly recommended, especially for the pleasure of sitting by the window watching the wildlife outside at close proximity. Not to be missed.

  • Lovely cabin. Nice area. Easy check in/out. Outstanding dvd collection.

    Stewart2017-07-30T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin was located in beautiful surroundings with the beach only a short walk which both the kids and dog loved! They also loved bird watching from the window and the highlight was watching the badgers every night. There is everything you could want provided and it was lovely, cozy and clean and there are lots of amazing walks and beaches in the surrounding area. We had a lovely relaxed holiday. We would highly recommend Pamela as a host.

    Rachel2017-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • This place has everything a small family could ask for. It was clean and comfortable, warm and cozy after being out on a cold and windy day, it was quite and relaxing and it was exactly what I wanted for my break away from the hectic life. I loved watching several species of birds so close from the sitting room sipping coffee. There is stylish restaurant onsite and the food is to die for. The beach is a 5 min walk away and my 8 yr old loved flying his kite. There are several coastal walks including the woodpecker trail which we did . Pam was a good host and answered all our queries promptly . She even left us biscuits and sweeets on arrival and the cupboard was full of necessities that tided us through the first day. Overall it met all my experiences and if you are looking for a bit of peace and quite then that s is the perfect little spot. Thankyou Pam

    Samira2018-05-22T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin is fantastic, very clean, well equipped, comfortable, in a great location - and it has badgers and red squirrels! We loved it and would definitely come back. Might even buy one!

    Chris2017-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin is adorable and in a lovely area in Scotland. The best part is the beach, just a few minutes walk down the road. We also enjoyed the restaurant on premises and the badgers. The cottage is well stocked, only con being the hot water took a while to heat up. Also we were disappointed that our cabin did not include access to the pool onsite. Overall we had a great time and would recommend staying here!

    Patti2017-05-28T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely park and comfortable chalet. A little disappointed that the swimming pool pass was not included as this costs an extra £10 per day.

You would rent the Cottage and Bothy together if you want four separate bedrooms - three in the cottage and the Bothy is a separate living space with a mezzanine bed. Not for the elderly or infirm !! If you're 3 couples/singles you just need the cottage. But if you are 4 couples/singles rent the 2 properties together.. The properties are wonderfully cosy with three wood burning stoves.
Just cross the road, go through the gate into the little community garden then through the football field alongside the river through the gate and follow the Hugh Paton signs. If you are a cyclist there are many different places to go cycling - there are two bikes in the shed which you can use. And of course there are endless fantastic walks - there are books in the house for walking and other amenities.
  • Sue's cottage and bothe (annex) in Auchencairn are not so much a holiday cottage as a incredibly stylish home and it added hugely to have such a wonderful home as a base for our trips around Dumfires and Galloway. Sue was incredibly helpful in giving us tips and is generous, for example by allowing guests to use her Nespresso machine (left us a lot of capsules) and more generally, to make use of her pantry and even alcohol cabinet, which had plenty of beers and some nice liquors. The property itself is stylishly decorated and very well proportioned and our two families felt very at home there for the 8 days that we stayed there. In terms of the area, there are lots of things for families to do, especially those with young children. All in all, the best Airbnb accommodation I have ever had the pleasure to stay in. Would consider repeating next year

Solid pine cabin in yachting village, Kippford, on sheltered Solway coast in SW Scotland. Stylish, spacious forest lodge, sleeps 6, in exclusive private site. Dogs welcome Forest, beaches, MTB trails, golf, walks. 2 good pubs serving food on seafront
Birchlea Lodge has 3 bedrooms - 1 double (king) & 2 twin. En-suite shower-room off Master; family bathroom w shower o/bath. Fully fitted modern kitchen: Electric oven & hob, Microwave, Dishwasher, Fridge/freezer. Washing m/c. Tumble dryer. Cupboard off hall suitable for drying wet gear etc. Digital (Freeview) 40" TV, DVD. Gas central heating. Wi-fi Linen, towels supplied. Veranda furniture. Garden games. Dogs welcome. Birchlea is within a very attractive small horseshoe-shaped landscaped site, overlooking a pretty lochan (Scottish for large pond!). There are 8 other lodges in Kipp Paddock but each is individually/privately owned. which means it is peaceful. Birchlea is well-placed to catch the sun from morning till evening, with 2 verandas facing towards Screel, one of the largest of the local Galloway hills. Galloway is home to the first 'Dark Sky Park' in the UK and you will see why: the unpolluted night sky is stunning! Kipp Paddock is backed by a birch forest, part of the more extensive Dalbeattie Forest, home to the celebrated 7Stanes mountain-biking trails. There is also a 9-hole golf course across the road. Wildlife which may pop out to see you include red squirrels, badgers, deer and countless rabbits. Kippford sea-front is a 10-minute stroll down the hill. A former fishing village with a history of ship-building, set on the Urr Estuary leading to the Solway Firth, it is now a popular yachting base. It is also an interesting 'no-through' road. While cars cannot venture past the village centre, there are 2 lovely paths: The Jubilee Path (Scottish National Trust-owned lands) is a gentle meander across the hill to our neighbouring village, Rockcliffe (1 mile), with its sandy, curved beach - perfect for litte ones. Or the coastal 'Rough Firth Road' is a pretty coastal path beside Kippford's shell & shingle beaches and many quirky findings (you have to come to find out what those are!). Backed by forest with walks and cycle trails; shingle and shell beaches along the shore, with views to the islands in the bay, Kippford is perfect base for walkers, rock-poolers, bucket-and-spaders, star-gazers, cyclists, water-sports enthusiasts or anyone who just wants to chill outside The Anchor Inn or The Mariner on a sunny day with a pint of local ale! Nearby towns are Dalbeattie (3 miles), Castle Douglas (the region's 'Food Town'; 20 mins); Kirkcudbright (famous for its pretty harbour and association with the Glasgow Boys' artists; 1/2 hr) and Wigtown (Scotland's Book Town; 1 hr). There are also several good places to eat nearby, farm shops (Galloway is well-known for its produce especially beef and we have an award-winning cheese-maker nearby), and fun days out for children/teens include Cream O Galloway, The Cocoa Bean Chocolate Factory, Mabie Farm Park, Galloway Activity Centre on Loch Ken (all sorts of water-sports, rock-climbing etc.), Laggan Outdoor Centre
Kippford is such a unique village. One thing that makes it special is that cars are discouraged beyond the village centre but walkers are encouraged along 2 paths which afford fantastic views. One along the coast past cockle shell beaches. The other over the hill and land owned by the Scottish National Trust to Rockcliffe, the next village. It has a pretty sandy bay and an Iron Age Hill Fort hillock on the way. With views to islands in the bay, the Dalbeattie Forest & the Muckle Hill (Moyle Hill) backing the Jubilee Path there are an abundance of walks. And 2 good pubs serving food & real ale in Kippford with views to the yachts.
  • This is a great place to stay and perfect walking distance down in to kippford. I say down as its all down hill on the way there but a little bit of a hill on the way back up. A few beers and you don't notice it though :) Lovely and relaxing weekend here with great friends.

  • Lynn and her husband were very welcoming, helpful and thoughtful leaving outside light on in case we arrived in the dark. They had put up a Xmas tree with lights and even left us a lovely Xmas cake to enjoy. Thank you. The lodge was excellent, easy to feel at home in, plenty of room, well equipped, clean, tidy, with very comfortable beds. There were 5 of us staying spanning 4 generations and suited all of us really well. We had a brilliant time there an excellent place to stay. Thank you so much Lynn.

  • An easy walk to the beach and an easy ride over to the Dalbeattie Forest MTB trails. Lovely cabin which is well cared for.

  • We had a brilliant stay at Birchlea Lodge! Lynn was an excellent host, very helpful, emailing us useful information about the lodge and the local area. We set off from home early as there had been weather warnings about snow storms sweeping the UK…. Lynn arranged for the lodge to be ready earlier than expected in case of bad weather, and texted to inform me of local conditions whilst we were on our journey. The lodge is delightful - light, warm, cosy yet spacious, nicely furnished, and in a lovely horse-shoe of 8 lodges, situated around a pond. No light pollution so the stars were amazing. Fabulous beaches within a few miles, pretty villages and whitewashed cottages everywhere. A very relaxing long weekend!

    Shela2015-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • This was our second time here :) and we would definitely come back! The lodge is fantastic and there is so much to do in the area! We had a great week - we enjoyed Sandy Hills beach and Rockcliffe beach which are a short drive away. Both are beautiful. We also enjoyed a long walk from Rockcliffe to Sandy Hills on the coastal path. Approx 4/5 miles but we walked at least 6 miles! (According to my Fitbit and my legs!!) With a 3 and 5 year old. We managed it but it did take 3 hours! Very beautiful. Bonus of starting at Rockcliffe meant at Sandy Hills we had the shop with ice cream, chocolate and crisps!! We enjoyed a walk in the woods, a lovely playpark and fish and chips in Kirkcudbright, the playpark in Daltbeattie, cream o Galloway near castle Douglas (also a Tesco, playpark and a few nice coffee shops) dalscone farm park (£30 for 2 adults and 2 kids) and Dino park (£24 for 2 adults and 2 kids) which are both Dumfries area. are fab with brilliant soft plays and outdoor areas. Highly recommend! (There is also Mabie farm park, the chocolate factory and lots more woods, walks, beaches close by that didn't need have time to visit!)

    Emma2017-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • The lodge was perfect for us. It was warm and cosy and was exactly what we were looking for. The directions Lynn provided us with were spot on and had no trouble finding the place. In addition, Lynn was excellent at providing suggestions for local walks to do (loved the walk to Rockcliffe, taking in Rough Island and the Mote of Mark), where to hire bikes from (although we decided not to do so in the end) and places to eat (had a very nice fish and chips in the Anchor). Overall, we had a lovely relaxing weekend in a fantastic lodge and our host Lynn could not have been more accommodating. I would definitely recommend it to a friend (in fact have already done so) and may even return some day.

  • Stunning location if, like us, you like remote and rugged country. Some beautiful sights, walks, beaches and locations in a short distance. The cottage is lovely and cosy, we visited in January, with snow on the ground and -8 temperatures and we were as warm as toast in a very comfortable and well appointed cottage. Joanne and Daniel are very welcoming and overall our stay was one of our best Airbnb stops

  • Two more perfect stays in the last month. Even in the middle of winter, warm clean, comfortable and extremely hospitable. Welcome basket, with a variety of local produce, continues to be much appreciated and enjoyed after a long journey. We hope to return soon.

Joanne was a great host, very friendly and quick to reply. We look forward to staying here again in the near future.
