Panetteria
“Some of the best bread and baked goods in the country are about a block away. (No joke: Head baker Evan Andres has been nominated for three James Beard Awards.) It’s hard to go wrong here, but our favorites include the breads, the ham and cheese croissant, the salami sandwich, and the tortas. Also, the cakes.”

Diner
“Bustling breakfast through late-lunch, this American diner is known for serving hardy comfort food in a comfortable setting. Cash or CC, but bring cash for "Geraldine's cash back". ”

Lounge
“A jazz club in Columbia City, it has live music 7 nights a week, check their calendar!”

Pizzeria
“Tutta Bella treats its employees well and their wood-fired Neapolitan pizza is world-class. There’s a nice bar/coffee shop on one side, and a large dining room on the other. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Great spot for kids. ”

Ristorante italiano
“Only a 10-minute walk from our guest house, this is one of the best Italian restaurants we've been to in Seattle (and we love Italian food). Their menu rotates regularly - they don't even have a paper menu, the items of the day are up on a chalk board. Excellent service and everything we've ever had is incredible. ”

Gastropub
“Hawaiian-inflected fare and great drinks. Some of our favorites are the Aloha Fries and the Musubi, a sort of giant cousin to sushi. If Morgan (tall, bald, thick-rimmed glasses) is behind the bar, get a cocktail.”

“Super-charged ristretto espresso (truly some of the best in town), as well as sandwiches and amazing buttery waffles. Also a great place to work or read a book. Open until 6.”

Caffetteria
“My go-to neighborhood coffee spot. They make pretty latte art too. They have a good selection of sweet goodies to go with your coffee. Savory food is limited; they have breakfast muffins but you have to heat them up yourself. I love the neighborhood vibe here so you get a good mix of people reading their books, drawing, and chatting with friends, rather than just rows and rows of people sitting with their laptops. ”

Cioccolateria
“Fran has been making handmade chocolates in Seattle for over 35 years. How lucky are we that Fran's chocolate factory is only 15 min walk or 3 min drive. They are open Mon-Sat 10am-6pm, Sun 11am-5pm. They have a $10 guided tasting experience during Monday to Friday only (weekends are unguided). I recently joined the experience and it was time and money well spent. The cost is for the chocolates you will taste and they are very generous with it. Having the host to give you a little tour of the space (not inside the factory) makes all the difference. The experience I went to lasted for an hour.”

“While I am NO FAN of starbucks, this store has a very diverse crowd of folks that actually sit down and TALK to each other (and not just via a computer).”

“This has a cafe vibe, we like their salad selections and baristas are friendly. We hear they have a killer brunch (with an equally killer wait, but we haven't been yet!). ”

“This bakery is only 5 minutes walking distance from here but only open Wed to Sun, 11am to 7pm (Sundays close at 5pm). They serve rotating selection of slices and cupcakes that feature local and seasonal flavors.”

Ristorante vietnamita
“Tony's is a Vietnamese deli and bakery. They have a much larger hot food selection than Q Bakery, and you can get made-to-order cakes there that are beautiful and delicious. If you're vegetarian, ask at the counter what your options are, as Tony's serves all of the Buddhist monks at the nearby Colam Pagoda and often has great vegetarian options. They also make Vietnamese yogurt in house which is delicious! ”

“Great bánh mì (Vietnamese Sandwiches) and a large selection of Vietnamese baked goods. Lunch for $3! This is our go-to spot for road trip fare. It's packed at lunchtime and closes by 6:00.”
