The East Neuk of Fife stretches from St Andrews down a coastline peppered with small villages, full of character, which face across The Firth of Forth to East Lothian on the opposite side. A jumble of quaint colourful houses lead down narrow winding streets to line the harbours and rocky shores and their distinctive crow-stepped gables, fore stairs and red pantiles preserve the impression of their time as fishing villages that were totally dedicated to the sea. St Monans itself became one of Scotland's busiest fishing ports for many years but, from the mid 1800's the fleet dwindled and the village had to rely less on fishing and more on its heritage, capitalising on its preserved architecture and waterfront (that is still very much a working harbour today). The Neuk has an open plan living/dining/kitchen on the ground floor. Stairs lead to the shower-room and bedroom. The top floor provides the 2nd bedroom. The cottage is set back from the road providing an outdoor space for sitting.

Edinburgh Airport is 30 miles away. The nearest rail station is Markinch, 10 miles from St Monans. There is a good bus service to and from St Monans. Free on-street parking is available 24/7 near or nearby the cottage. There is an excellent taxi service in the village.

There are steep stairs between the ground and second floors.

This was a perfect place for us to stay as a family and explore a beautiful part of Scotland. The house has loads of personality and is extremely comfortable. Steven is an excellent host and provided useful information in advance, plus handbook and guidebooks in the house. Highly, highly recommended - it's a charming house & great location. Highlights - real fire, lovely decor, fantastic farm shop close by.

We had a great short stay at Stevens cottage which is ideally suited as a base to play the local golf courses or explore the lovely countryside. We would highly recommend it.

Steven's home is very comfortable and in a fantastic location. St. Monan's is a lovely fishing village and the house is almost right at the harbour. We were a bit late getting in to St. Monan's and Steven made it very easy to get the keys to us which was much appreciated.

The Fife coastal walk is one of Europe's hidden gems. It is remarkably lucky I had the fortune of staying in a marvellous house located quite literally on the coast walk.

Steven's place was incredibly lovely and cozy and located in a quaint little fishing village that was absolutely poetic! After a few busy days of sightseeing and attending the fringe festival in Edinburgh, St. Monans was a quiet retreat and we liked it the best of the villages in the area. It worked well for us in traveling to and from St. Andrews. Steven's house was modernly renovated with all the conveniences needed (including wifi) but at the same time it had an old world charm. We were impressed with the stylish decorating that added a lot of character to the house. In terms of cleanliness it was spotless! The bedrooms and bath were spacious, towels were very nice, and beds were comfy with snugly duvets. There were very thoughtful touches such as spices to use, a French press coffee pot, towel warmer, and tote bag. We greatly appreciated Steve's timely communication with us and checking how we were doing as we were traveling internationally. The chipper in nearby Pittenweem that he recommended in his binder had the best fish we ate in Scotland at a good price! The Post office/market just a block away had reasonably priced/fresh food where we could buy just the small amounts we wanted and the couple running it were very friendly. We would stay here again--it was a fantastic place. Thanks, Steven!

Our host was available and attentive. The cottage was attractive and very comfortable. The area was great for walking and exploring. There was a village shop and Post Office nearby, a fantastic informal cafe/restaurant on the East Pier and a great farm shop a couple of miles away. We had a great time and would definately go back.

Country boy in city skin - highly gregarious and passionate about Edinburgh.

I love my partner Tim, my family, my bike, swimming, early mornings and walking my Great Dane Indigo. I also really like porridge and making curries, pottering in the garden, charity shops and sale shopping for groovy clothes.

I have a really good feel for what is hot and what is not in Edinburgh for 40 somethings - particularly food, galleries, coffee shops, bakeries, record stores, live music venues, city centre walks, parks, views, good places to drink wine and cocktails and good places to eat street food or to eat without a reservation.

I work for a design consultancy and therefore aesthetic things are very important to me, I hate faddish and impractical things though and try to keep things as simple as possible. I like nothing better than a train journey with a box fresh copy of Elle Decor!

I have used Airbnb for Euro city breaks and have always loved the local insights that you get from good hosts - that is what I want to make sure my guests get from me in Edinburgh.
