Descrizione

This lovely one-bed cottage is tucked away down some steep steps in a quiet Holmfirth backwater. The warm, cosy space is newly refurbished, with welcoming stove, gas central heating and lots of homely touches. A short walk takes you down some steps to the bus station, shops and cafés.

Tucked away down a flight of 25 steep stone steps, this traditional Yorkshire under-dwelling has a terrace where you can sit and look out over the town of Holmfirth and beyond. Although the living space is ideal for two, the double sofa-bed means that the cottage can sleep four if desired, and up to six people can eat at the dining table if you are meeting friends or family while in Holmfirth.

In the living room, there is a flame-effect electric stove in the stone fireplace, a double sofa bed for occasional extra guests and a vintage French dresser which divides the kitchen from the living and dining area. The gate-leg dining table folds down to a compact size for two people and folds out to seat six: there are four dining chairs with two extra folding ones available, if required.

Upstairs, the bedroom has a new double bed, a large new pine wardrobe, a chair with seat cushion and a dressing-table style mirror with a small drawer. There is also room for a travel cot in the bedroom, and this cot (with a good quality mattress) plus a high chair can be reserved with one week's notice.
The bathroom has a good shower over the bath and the combi-boiler means you have unlimited hot water.

Outside, there is a compact gravel area with bistro table and four chairs for use all year round, and in the summer the decking can be used to soak up the afternoon sun.

Because of the access via a flight of 25 steep stone steps, I would not recommend this cottage to anyone with restricted mobility or difficulty with stairs.

Guests will have access to the whole house, comprising living/kitchen area, double bedroom and bathroom. Outside you can access the gravel seating area all year round and the wooden decking in the summer months, as the latter is slippery when wet or icy.

I will always try to meet my guests on arrival and see them off when they leave. In between these times I can be contacted by email or mobile phone, and hope to be able to sort out any problems in person as I am only a ten minute drive away.

Holmfirth is a delightful and vibrant market town where you can immerse yourself in art and culture, walk or cycle along the iconic Tour de France trail, eat a gourmet meal in one of the many excellent restaurants or café bars, or, just at the bottom of the steps into the centre, have a cup of tea in Sid's Café, made famous by the TV comedy series 'Last of the Summer Wine'.

Holmfirth is the gateway to the spectacular Peak District National Park, four miles to the south of the town, accessed via Holme Moss View Point, 525m above sea level, which is at the summit of the route made famous by the Tour de France. You can also explore some of the lovely scenery in this area of the Pennines on a five mile walk past Digley, Ramsden and Yateholme Reservoirs.

The town itself boasts the north of England's most intimate music venue, the Picturedrome, where you can get close up to famous musicians and bands, and there is a variety of music on offer throughout the year, including the Holme Valley Brass Band Contest in April, the Holmfirth Folk Festival in May and the Holmfirth Music Festival in October. Nearby, you can enjoy live music once a month on Monday evenings on the Penistone Line Music Train and visit the buzzing Marsden Jazz Festival in October.

For Art lovers, there is Holmfirth Art Week in July, the HOST Artists' Open Studio Trail every September and the regular Holmfirth Art Market. You can also see Holmfirth through the eyes of the local artist Ashley Jackson, following his route through the back streets of Holmfirth in the free guide available from Holmfirth Tourist Information Centre. Further afield, keen walkers can follow all or part of the 47 mile 'Stanza Stones Trail' from Marsden to Ilkley, to find the six verses carved into the rocks by local poet Simon Armitage CBE.

Within 30 minutes drive, you can explore the beautiful Yorkshire Sculpture Park, take a boat trip into the highest, longest and deepest canal in the country at Standedge Tunnel, Marsden, and pamper yourself at the Titanic Spa in Linthwaite.

The cottage is a five minute walk from Holmfirth Bus Station where you can get a bus direct to the local towns of Honley, Huddersfield and Denby Dale, and further afield to 50 other destinations, including Wakefield, Glossop and Ashton Under Lyne. The railway station in the local village of Brockholes is on a bus route, and from there you can get a train direct to Meadowhall Interchange (for Meadowhall Shopping Centre), Sheffield City Centre and links to anywhere beyond.

Although Holmfirth is famous for its arts and crafts, its tourist trails and its cultural festivals, the more mundane things such as supermarket shopping are well covered too. There is a Sainsburys Local (open 7am - 11pm every day) by the bus station, five minutes walk from the cottage, a large Co-op a seven minute walk away over the pretty riverside walkway and a Lidl Supermarket a three minute drive away from the town centre.

The house now has access to the Internet, so Wi-Fi is available for guests to use. This means you will only be cut off from the rest of the world if you want to be!

Extra information about parking:
The house is situated on a narrow lane in the back-streets above Holmfirth, so parking is fairly tight. There is always room to park somewhere on the lane but it is not always possible to find a parking place right outside the house. If you prefer, there is free parking after 4pm every day in a small car park a few minutes walk away at the bottom of the lane, or outside the bus station in the centre, or in the Co-op car park over the river, so if you intend to arrive after 4pm you can park in one of these car parks and arrange to meet me in the town centre instead.

I have tried to furnish and equip my cottage as I would wish to find it, thinking of all the facilities I would want myself if I was visiting. This includes providing a separate hand towel in the bathroom alongside the bath sheets and bath towels so that each guest has two clean towels for personal use, and spare hand towels, tea-towels and rolls of kitchen paper in the kitchen area. There are spare supplies of liquid soap for kitchen and bathroom as well as extra shampoo and shower gel. Please respect my intentions and leave them for my next guests.
The central heating is set at a constant 15 degrees C, but can be altered very easily by pressing the + or - buttons on the right hand side of the thermostat to select the required temperature. This manually over-rides the settings until the next time period: 7.00pm, 11pm, 7.00am, 12.00 noon, etc, when the settings revert to the default 15 degrees.
If guests want to sit outside and leave the door open, it would be very helpful if they could first lower the thermostat so the central heating isn't triggered to come on!
The electric stove has three settings: the right-hand switch turns on the flame effect without heat, the central switch provides some convected heat and the left-hand switch provides the maximum convected heat. It would be very helpful if guests could turn this stove off at night before going to bed.
I provide spare light bulbs in the chest of drawers in the living area: bottom right-hand drawer. Generally, if there is anything missing or guests are unable to find something, I can be contacted by sending a text to my mobile at any reasonable hour, on the number provided by Airbnb.
On check-out, it would be very helpful if guests could strip the bed/s of quilt cover, sheet and pillow-cases and leave the used bath-towels hanging on the hooks in the bedroom. I don't charge a cleaning fee in order to keep costs down for my guests, but it makes my life much easier if all the used linen is ready to pack in a bag and take home to wash!
It would also be very helpful if guests could wash up and put away the dishes and pans they have used. I provide a sponge, J-cloth, washing-up brush and washing-up liquid and there is a supply of clean tea-towels in the left hand drawer of the French dresser if the two I have put out are damp.
To sum up, I would appreciate it if you could treat the cottage with care and leave it as you would wish to find it.
